Millennials in the Workforce

Millennials in the Workforce

RESEARCH PAPER OUTLINE
MANAGEMENT 3240

Much has been spoken and written about the generation of young employees entering the workforce over the course of the past five years (ages 22-30’ish). With labels such as the “entitlement generation”, “trophy kids”, and “generation why”, it is not difficult to see the potential for tension across the many generations current in the workforce.
On the other hand, employees in this cohort have been described as technically savvy, creative, hardworking, and unafraid of challenges.
As expected, there has been much research recognizing both the virtues (e.g., good stuff) and annoyances (e.g., bad stuff) of this generation. Undoubtedly, each of us sees the contrasting attitudes, behaviors, and beliefs of this age group in action on a daily basis.
The underlying work-related questions: Do Millennials fit in? Do Millennials get along? Do Millennials contribute? How do others feel about Millennials? These are important issues to consider.
You may have an opinion on this topic – you may not (opinions are good…with some foundation to rest upon, of course!). But at some point, you should at least develop an informed understanding of the importance of the topic in contemporary work settings – “the contemporary work settings you are seeking to occupy…!”
This is where the “research” part of the research paper comes in. Specifically, you are to create a research paper that addresses key issues.

This is what you need to cover in this research paper:

-Introduce the topic by discussing the influence of generational issues in American work settings. Provide information regarding the expected participation rates of the various groups (e.g., Millennials, Baby Boomers etc.) in the years to come. Why is it important that they “get along” or at least can find ways to peacefully coexist? (Approximately 600 words).

-Acknowledge the various ways in which the youngest generation (i.e., Millennials) is different from others currently in the workforce. Why? What are the social and family sources of these differences? (550 words)

-What unique strengths and limitations (weaknesses) does this generation have? (450-550 words)

-What unique criticisms have been conferred on this generation by older employees and society? Basically, what things does this generation do at work that may have a negative impact on the company or others they work with? (500 words)

-How would you motivate younger employees to both contribute and remain loyal if given that task? I need you to set up a motivation plan that is designed to get the most out of these employees. Specifically, please come up with 8-10 specific tactics that managers must use to keep younger employees productive and engaged. Again, scour the research…there is much out there. For the 8-10 you come up with, please use a bullet-point format, as well as text as their explanation, for ease of review (i.e., not just bullet-points, use bullet point with content (500-600 words). Set it up with some written text. Just don’t drop a pile of bullets into this section without explanation.

-Finally, address the following questions as they relate to your first year at work. First, how are you going to try to connect with workers of generations? Second, how are you going to ensure that your work and home lives are in balance? Third, list the top five things that are important with respect to a job. Describe possible ways to increase your potential for securing them. Finally, describe the opportunities and challenges you face as you enter the work force. Please indicate how they relate to those faced by older generations (similar? different?)(500-600 words).

What is Research?
Legitimate Research
 Peer-reviewed academic/scientific journals
 Data provided in government reports (from research that is soundly conducted)
 Well-established business/news publications (Wall Street Journal, BusinessWeek, New York Times, Time).
 Facts/Statistics that have sources that can be substantiated/confirmed.
 Primary source data – defined as first-hand testimony or direct evidence concerning a particular topic.
 Try InfoTrac, Lexis/Nexis, Psychinfo (for a start).
 For help, ask one of our 23,488,987 librarians.
 Encyclopedia Britannica (okay for background information, but dated)
Not Legitimate Research
 Wikipedia
 Blogs
 Sources with an agenda
 Ask.com and others like this cite
 Video and interviews
 Questionable websites (just because it’s on the Internet doesn’t “mean it’s RESEARCH!!”)
Any non-legitimate references/sources will be immediately dismissed!!

Advice:
1. It is better to over-reference than under-reference. Newer references are preferred all things considered.
2. Don’t cut and paste! Ever! Never Ever!!
3. Definitions…reference needed.
4. Statistics…reference needed.
5. Not your idea…reference needed.
6. “According to Curly Howard…” reference needed.
7. The world changes quickly – think in current terms. Old research is like old spaghetti, really old spaghetti!
8. Keep referencing/bibliography/footnoting style accurate and consistent (8-10 per page is expected, 20-40 is expected for the complete paper). Zero to 10 references tells me that you did not dig deeply enough.
9. Go easy on the quotes. One per page is probably pushing it.
10. Handle the few direct quotes you may use correctly. Use the right format for everything (APA, MLA, whatever).

Other Expectations:
1. Double spaced; 1 inch margins: 12 point Times Roman exclusively. If it’s too small to read, you can’t get credit. It’s got to look the same throughout the entire paper (text matches references etc.).
2. Accurate and appropriate referencing (use the format you were taught/like best). CONSISTENCY!
3. Title page.
4. Headings for each section. Use headings in the order they are provided. Make them easily identifiable.
5. NO PLAGIARISM of any type will be accepted.
6. Make sure it doesn’t look like crap when you turn it in. It is expected to look like a well-developed, thoughtful, and polished piece of research. Look at it one more time before submission. If it looks lousy, it looks lousy.

Benefits of Health Information Exchange Technology

1-1 Discussion: Benefits of Health Information Exchange Technology

Across the United States, states and territories have worked with the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONC) to develop and implement HIE, the ability for authorized healthcare providers to securely share real-time information electronically.

For this discussion, begin by reviewing the Health Information Exchange: Making a Difference video (4:07)

and the Healthcare Information Exchange (HIE): Considerations for Engaging North Carolina Consumers article.

Problem Solving

Problem Solving- Instructions

Overview:

Use a decision-making model of your choice to discuss an organizational communication problem you have experienced.

• Competency: Analyze business communication situations.
o Describe an organizational communication problem.
Competency: Analyze the interrelationships of communication within organizational systems.
o Explain a decision-making model.
o Describe a solution to an organizational communication problem using a decision-making model.
Competency: Communicate effectively.
o Consistently apply appropriate APA style and formatting.

Context:

Problem Solving

The acts of solving problems and making decisions involve considering the possible options and then selecting of the best option to solve an

organizational issue. Problem solving and decision making can be done as individual or team processes. Effective organizational communication

supports how we think through, discuss, and choose resolutions for issues.

Other organizational activities that rely on communication competencies include interviews, written correspondence, and presentations:
• We gather and exchange information during the interview process.
• Written correspondence uses media to communicate without corresponding verbal messages.
• Presentations are formal communication events designed to educate, inform, or persuade.

Organizational Conflict

Many probably agree that life revolves around relationships. Because we are all unique, we each bring our own beliefs, preferences, communication

styles, wants, and needs to our various relationships. As such, conflict is bound to occur. We all frequently experience opportunities for

negotiation in our personal, professional, and social lives.

As part of the Harvard Negotiation Project, Fisher and Ury (1991), Harvard Law School professors, helped to devise principled negotiation, a

decision-making process based on the merits of issues rather than on a haggling process focused on what each side says it will or will not do. They

explain principled negotiation as follows:
• It suggests that you look for mutual gains whenever possible, and that where your interests conflict, you should insist that the result be

based on some fair standards independent of the will of either side. The method of principled negotiation is hard on the merits, soft on the people.

It employs no tricks and no posturing. Principled negotiation shows you how to obtain what you are entitled to and still be decent. It enables you

to be fair while protecting you against those who would take advantage of your fairness. (p. xviii)

In principled negotiation, all sides work together to creatively come up with a solution that works for both parties and, ideally, is better than

what any side initially had in mind.

Stephen R. Covey incorporates the theory of principled negotiation in Habit 6: Synergize of The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People Signature

Program. Covey (2005) believes that “[p]eople who are truly effective have the humility and reverence to recognize their own perceptual limitations

and appreciate the rich resources available through interaction with the hearts and minds of other human beings” (p. 127).

Many organizations have incorporated training programs to address successful conflict resolution. You can see why these types of training programs

would rely heavily on effective communication competency levels.

Strategic Management

Strategic management can be described as a set of decisions and actions that result in the formulation of plans designed to achieve a company’s

objectives. One of the fundamentals of strategic management is the formulation of a mission statement that serves as an overall guide for all

aspects of an organization’s efforts. Often, organizations also develop a statement of philosophy or company creed that reflects or specifies the

basic beliefs, values, aspirations, and philosophical priorities upon which the mission statement is based.

Communicating Change

The successful design and implementation of a change-related communication plan depends on professionals who possess excellent communication

competency skills. Changes—planned and unexpected—are realities in all facets of our lives.

Why is structured management and communication of change such a necessary focus in organizations today? Why does change seem to be happening faster

and faster? Globalization and technological advances have resulted in broad-based, fast-paced change becoming the new norm. Even our attention spans

have been evolving to match the short, fragmented timing patterns of television commercials and the pace of video games.

Stop and think about it for a moment, if you can find the time! Did you know that Ford’s Model T was virtually unchanged for almost twenty years?

How long will this year’s car models stay the same? Tools from the Stone Age went unchanged for thousands of years. When was the last time you

upgraded your cell phone?

There are many other examples of how quickly things change.

As rapid change becomes the norm, individuals and organizations are gaining valuable experience in managing change successfully. As a result, more

and more resources become available every day for others to research and use.

Information Technology

Information technology heavily supports these communication methodologies. In fact, communication competencies would be incomplete without

considering the influence of technology and electronic communication. Therefore, constant competency development and an attitude of openness to

change and lifelong learning are keys to success.

Technology has continuously changed the face of social and economic systems, beginning with simple tools, through production automation, to the use

of technological interfaces. One benefit of technology is that it enables communication between individuals across geographical distance and time

zones.

It has also led to information overload.

With all of its benefits, the most fundamental change that technology growth is driving, however, is that of changing the way individuals interact,

thus challenging our concepts of communication to the core.

Many teams consist of individuals who:
• Have never met face-to-face.
• Belong to different organizations.
• Belong to different cultures.
• Reside in different time zones.
• Have different competencies in working with technology.

Instructions:
Complete the following:
1. Choose an organizational communication problem you have experienced in your workplace or other organization with which you are involved.

Examples of organizational communication problems are as follows:
o The leaders of an organization know they have to downsize (that is, fire) a large number of employees but do not effectively communicate the

situation.
o Policies at a company are not followed in different departments or at different locations because the policies are not communicated well by

a central office.
o Employees with inappropriate skill sets are hired because individuals familiar with the requirements do not communicate with the individuals

hiring for the position.
o Two leaders within an organization provide different directions on how employees should conduct their work.
Search for resources to examine decision-making models, and select one to apply to the organizational communication problem you have chosen.
Write a paper in which you address the following:
o Describe the organizational communication problem
o Explain the decision-making model you chose that applies to the problem.
o Use the selected decision-making model to describe solutions to the problem.

Additional Requirements
• Written communication: Written communication is free of errors that detract from the overall message.
• APA formatting: Resources and citations are formatted according to APA (6th ed.) style and formatting. Include a properly formatted title

page and references page.
• Font and font size: Times New Roman, 12 point.

3 Letters Writing

• Compose two professionally formatted business letters.
• Collaborate effectively with a partner

Using the Claim and Adjustment Letter Rubric as a guide for the specific grading criteria and Chapter 15 – Work Place Letters in the

Technical Communication textbook, you will collaborate with your partner you were paired up with from the discussion board Week 2 Partner

Workshop and each compile the following three documents (parts): Claim Letter, Adjustment Letter and Collaboration Overview / Self-

Evaluation. You will exchange Claim Letters and Adjustment Letters with each other, using any method you choose. You may use the

discussion board Week 2 Partner Workshop, University Panthermail or any other method that works best for you and your partner.

Part I: Claim Letter
Formulate a complaint letter about an unsatisfactory customer service situation you have experienced. Compose your Claim Letter accurately

explaining what happened that led to your dissatisfaction with a service or product, how this event impacted your perception of the

company (will you ever shop there again?), and what you would like the company to do. Be sure to follow the format for writing a

professional letter found in your book. Exchange your completed Claim Letter with your partner to get feedback. Multiple revisions may be

exchanged with your partner throughout the week to polish and improve your letter as much as possible.

Part II: Adjustment Letter
In response to your partner’s Claim Letter, compose an Adjustment Letter denying the claim requested. Why? Because the goal of this

assignment is to practice writing negative messages. The trick in writing effective negative messages is tone and style. You don’t want to

be too nice but you also don’t want to be too harsh. Your letter should be a professional and serious rejection of the claim. If your

Adjustment Letter is positive (i.e. if you give the person what s/he wants) you will not receive credit since you did not follow

directions. Be sure to follow the format for writing a professional letter found in your book. Exchange your completed Adjustment Letter

with your partner to get feedback. Multiple revisions may be exchanged with your partner throughout the week to polish and improve your

letter as much as possible.

Part III: Collaboration Overview and Self Evaluation
Develop a one page minimum (double spaced and in APA format) overview of your collaboration and an evaluation of yourself. This document

will not be exchanged with your partner. It should detail:
• Who your partner was.
• Brief evaluation of your own claim letter. What are its strengths? Weaknesses? What would you do differently if you had more time?

• Brief evaluation of your own adjustment letter. What are its strengths? Weaknesses? What would you do differently if you had more time?
• Brief evaluation of your collaboration – did you work together effectively? Why or why not? What might you need to do differently in

future collaborative projects in class?

Turn in final drafts of your own claim letter, adjustment letter and Collaboration Overview and Self Evaluation in ONE document by the

deadline posted on the course calendar. You do not need to include your partner’s letters.

ethical views of all the philosophers

In this paper you will compare the ethical views of all the philosophers we have studied. Please explain in detail the various elements on which they agree and disagree. You may approach this question in a variety of ways. For example, you may present your analysis thematically by explaining how each philosopher views the ethical issues of the highest good, happiness, virtue, duty, character, the place of God in ethics, pleasure, etc. Or you may approach the issue by comparing pairs of thinkers (for example, Kant vs. Mill and Aquinas vs. Aristotle; or Kant vs. Aristotle and Mill vs. Aquinas, etc.), so long as all philosophers are treated.

Be sure to provide thorough and clear explanations of each philosopher’s position and how they arrived at that position (that is, their arguments for their views). Last, present your own argument for why you believe one ethical system is better than the others.

Assignment 2: Conflict Resolution

• Assignment 2: Conflict Resolution
Conflict resolution is a necessary skill for any manager or leader. In this assignment, you will examine the difference between conflict and

competition. You will also explore ways of determining when conflict resolution is necessary and explain ways to resolve conflict.
Research the role of conflict and competition using your textbook, the Argosy University online library resources, and the Internet. Select two

resources for use in this assignment. Reflect on your experiences with conflict. If you have no business related experiences with conflict, apply

your personal experiences to a common workplace situation.
Review the following video:
o Ury W. (2010, October). The walk from “no” to “yes” [Video File]. TED Conferences, LLC. Retrieved from

Using the selected resources and examples from your experiences respond to the following:
o Explain the difference between conflict and competition.
o Describe a situation where competition is healthy. How does that relate to a business environment?
o Describe a situation where competition could lead to conflict and might not be healthy.
o What methods could you use to resolve the conflict?
o What leadership techniques would you use to resolve a conflict?
o In resolving conflict, use an example to describe a “best case” scenario.
Give reasons in support of your assertions. Be sure to reference your selected resources and examples from your experiences.
Apply APA format and standards to citation of sources.

Carver’s “Popular Mechanics,”

Read Carver’s “Popular Mechanics,” pg. 216

Read Oates’ “HiHowYaDoin” pg. 209

The death of the protagonist with the toothy grin and repetitive welcome is foreshadowed in the very beginning of the story, setting up the tension as he passes the other runners on his way to his ultimate fate.
This short story is told in one complete sentence that illustrates the pace and rhythm of the joggers as they go about their personal exercise routines. The third person narration allows the reader to understand what the other joggers think as they run, lost in their own thoughts and problems. Each character offers insight into the stresses and realities of life, as the setting of the university grounds offers what should be a comfortable, safe environment that all these characters feel safe and secure in. They are all, however, jolted out of their internal dialogues by the man’s greeting. His standard greeting impacts each of the differently, but is always unexpected and awkward. The way each runner reacts symbolizes their individual attitudes and angst, particularly when he passes the final runner whose anger and rage pushes him to answer the repetitive question with a final act of violence. When the protagonist comes upon the final runner, the narrative transitions from the internal “I” thought process to the second person “you” as the mental confusion and rage come together to culminate in the young man finally allowing his anger to spill out as he removes the gun he’s been carrying around for three years from his pocket and shots the protagonist in the head. This final act of murder of a random person illustrates the senselessness that accompanies much of the violence encountered in our culture. It is purely unexpected and shocking in the time and place of a late afternoon university campus running path filled with middle-class professionals going about their everyday lives and, ironically, getting their exercise and relieving their stress.
What does it say that each is so surprised by the friendly comment? What does it say about the protagonist that he feels the need to address everyone he passes with a friendly salutation? How is it ironic that this friendly greeting gets him killed? What does that say about violence in our society?

Carver’s “Popular Mechanics”
This story is steeped in symbolism. The setting is illustrative of a relationship that is dying, as are the plants, and other elements depicted in the house. The need for both parents to be win and take control of the child develops into an insane exchange between the parents, which is very symbolic of the biblical story of “splitting the child in two.” What symbolism do you see in the story? How is it ironic? What do you think happens to the child in the end?
Please take your thoughts and analytical points to the discussion board….

History

Question 1
“The 1920s were a decade of conflict and tension,” argues American Yawp. While this is true of any decade, “The New Era” of the 1920s

witnessed particularly divisive conflicts over issues relating to race, religion, gender and immigration. In your essay, explain how

immigration, the rise of fundamentalist Christianity, and the rise of the second Ku Klux Klan are interrelated. What do the relationships

between them reveal about the conflicts and tensions of the 1920s? Again, be sure to explain how each is interrelated and do not simply

explain each one separately.

Question 2
“Before World War I, the American national state, though powerful, had been a ‘government out of sight,'” argues American Yawp. How did the

Great Depression and New Deal of the 1930s transform the power and visibility of the federal government in the lives of Americans and why?

What do you think were the two most important ways the New Deal transformed American’s relationship to their federal government?

Question 3
How did issues related to the youth of America transform the Civil Rights Movement of the 1950s? Pick two examples and analyze them in your

essay.

Question 4
According to Chapter 28, “The Unraveling,” in American Yawp, by the late 1960s and 1970s, it seemed as though America “was ready to

unravel.” In your essay, first explain what is meant by “unraveling.” What exactly was unraveling in America during this time? Second,

provide two examples of how America “unraveled” during this time period and explain why they happened. Last, how did these examples of

“unraveling” transform America?
