IT Outsourcing—Domestic vs. Global

The distinction between domestic and international collaborations has blurred. A number of companies, depending on their organizational size, outsource their IT work to domestic or international companies. For example, a multibillion dollar company may outsource an IT project instead of developing it in-house. The reason could be a high profit margin due to a lower cost for the outsourced solution. Mid-market firms, which are companies with the prospects of high growth within just a few years from creation, are often faced with the question of whether to outsource or not.

This week’s Discussion is designed to help you understand the reasons mid-market firms may select domestic or international vendors for outsourcing IT projects.

You are required to develop and thoroughly analyze a public policy in order to advocate for one that improves the health of the public and/or the nursing profession globally (local, state, national, or international). To do this, you will reflect on several aspects of being a policy maker within the nursing position.

• How does this issue affect nursing practice, healthcare delivery, and health outcomes for individual, families, and/or communities?
• What are the values and the ethical positions that underpin your perspectives?

By using both a top-down and a bottom-up approach, you will analyze and bring the nursing perspective to policy makers and stakeholders. This will lead to a created a policy brief that can be sent to decision makers and created a plan to work with an organization/community to promote policy change at the local level.

In Week 1, we heard Chimamanda Adichie speak about the power of stories to combat dangerous and dehumanizing narratives. At the end of her

talk, she says, “Stories matter. Many stories matter. Stories have been used to dispossess and to malign, but stories can also be used to

empower and to humanize. Stories can break the dignity of a people, but stories can also repair that broken dignity.” As a result,

according to her, “when we reject the single story, when we realize that there is never a single story about any place, we regain a kind

of paradise.”
Storytelling has become popular again in recent years, with storytelling competitions popping up across the country. Some, like The Moth,

aim to celebrate stories from all kinds of people in our country and in our world. Your final project is in the spirit of shared

storytelling.

As we also saw in Week 4, we all have our stories to offer, and the power of the first-person narrative can be helpful in reducing

stereotypes, understanding those who differ from us, challenging our preconceived notions, and helping us connect more fully to our human

community.

From Problem to Persuasion
The journal activity in this course is private between you and the instructor. This week you spent some time reflecting on persuasion in your everyday

life, and you shared some potential topic ideas with your peers and instructor. But why is persuasion so important? Let’s think about that a little bit in

this journal entry.
Reviewing your brainstorming activity, select two potential problems that 1) have two logical sides to the issue (your viewpoint and an opposing

viewpoint), 2) are researchable, and 3) are related to your career or degree.
In your journal, write a fully developed paragraph for each problem (5-8 sentences each) explaining two sides to the issue (how is it argumentative?), how

you plan to approach it in your project (what side are you going to take?), and why you’re personally interested in it (of all the potential problems in

your field or degree, why did you choose this?). When writing the paragraphs, feel free to express any other thoughts or concerns you may have about the

topic choices.
After exploring the argumentativeness of your problems, take a moment to consider the bigger picture. Then, in one to two paragraphs, briefly reflect on

the importance of persuasion with the potential topic you’re most likely to write about. Why is it important that people consider your side with your

selected topic? Who is your audience, and why is it important to convince them that your view on your topic is the better (or more correct) view? Remember

to try to be specific in your entry: this information will help guide you as you work on your project in the coming weeks.
