THE SOCIAL SHAPING OF EMOTION:THE CASE OF GRIEF

THE SOCIAL SHAPING OF EMOTION:THE CASE OF GRIEF

Professionals often view GRIEF as an emotion located within a given individual. Many sociologists, on the other hand, are interested in the ‘social shaping’ of grief and in how individuals engage with cultural norms and customs associated with grieving.
Using Lofland’s ‘THE SOCIAL SHAPING OF EMOTION:THE CASE OF GRIEF’ as a starting point, explore the ways in which our experiences of grief and our practices of mourning are socially constructed.
Use several examples to help ground your discussion of this topic.
Your discussion should show understanding of the following:
– social construction of grief and mourning
– cultural norms for expressing grief
– feeling rules
– social bonds
– social structure
– self identity
– gender

1. Experiential meanings:
a) What process types are present in the text? Is one type dominant, or maybe more than one? Is this pattern an expected one for the context, or unexpected? What other Process types are there and where do they occur. What does this pattern of Process type choices tell you about the text’s context and the writer’s purpose within that context? The ranked clauses are the essential ones to look at, but it is also worth looking inside the embedded clauses to see what kinds of messages have been embedded. There is extensive embedding in Text 2; we will leave it for you to do your own experiential analysis of the process types and participant roles in the embedded clauses.
b) What are the Participant roles and who/what carries out these roles? Does the pattern of who/what carries out the roles remain constant or does the pattern change? In either case, what are the implications in terms of the writer’s purpose?
c) What Circumstance types are evident in the text, and where and why do they occur? Are they what you would expect of such a text and why? Again, relate the grammar choices to the context.
2. Interpersonal meanings:
a) What is the pattern of Mood choice in the text and is it what you would expect? Why? If it is unexpected, or if the pattern changes within the text, again offer some suggestions as to why the writer has made these choices to carry out their purpose. What speech functions are the Mood choices signifying? Why and how do you know? Remember that Mood is about the grammar of the relationship between Subject and Finite; Speech Function is about the social purpose the Mood choice is used for.
b) Who/what gets to be Subject of the finite clauses? Are the clauses active, with Subject mapped onto Actor in the case of material process for instance; or are some of the clauses passive, with the Goal/Range as Subject in the case of material process for instance?
c) Are the Finites all or mostly tense Finites (present, past, future) and which tense is dominant? Are there any modal Finites and what is the nature of the modality expressed: obligation, certainty, possibility, probability, ability etc? What is the polarity of the Finites and why? Does the dominant pattern change anywhere? Where and why? Is there modality expressed by means of modal adjuncts anywhere in the text, including in embedded clauses? Where and why?
