deductive research project

One of the core requirements of this course is writing a proposal for a deductive research project. In an effort to get you thinking about the paper, your paper topic and other preliminary information, is due by Friday, February 2nd at 11:59pm. To assist you in understanding the research paper, details are located in the “Research Paper Details” link to the left.
At this point you do not have the knowledge to write the paper, but submitting your paper topic now will allow you to experience course content through this lens and apply what we are learning. The topic should be an area of criminal justice you would be interested in conducting research. You will not have to do the research, you will only be writing a proposal/plan of how you would approach the research. There will be flexibility on the topic you choose and you may refine your topic as we move throughout the semester, but the further we move throughout the semester, the more work it will be to backtrack.
The submission should be approximately 1 page and should include:
1 – the general topic area (for example corrections, law enforcement, courts, juvenile delinquency, drugs). This should be an area of criminal justice that you are interested in. Believe me, it will make the paper more interesting if you choose a topic that will engage you. As stated above, you should be thinking about a deductive research project.
2 – the research question/hypothesis you would be interested in exploring. Examples of what this would look like:
• Are lower crime rates for females (compared to males) due to higher levels of compassion among females?
• Does a NARCAN dosage increase likelihood of participating in drug rehabilitation?
• Does Three Strikes Legislation deter crime?

3 – What do you expect you would find if you conducted this research? What is the expected relationship? What do expect the “causal relationship” be. This may be the area that becomes more refined or changes as you gather more information about your topic.
******* This introduction will be the “Statement of Problem” section in your final paper **********
1. STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM: Brief introduction. Indicate what you want to study and why. What is it you wish to know or explain? Choose a topic that you know something about or that you are interested in. Keep it focused. Give enough information to draw the reader in, but not too much information that you give the story away.

Please read the readings linked to in the folder “Readings for week 11” as well as watching the
videos. Answers should range from 50 to 200 words. Students are to use their own words and
not copy text from another source unless specifically asked to. Make sure your response answers
the question asked. Some questions are opinion questions; there is no right or wrong answer, but
I want you to make it clear you have thought about the question being asked.
This week we’re focusing on genetic engineering. We’re going to talk specifically about one
technique, CRISPR/Cas, and one outcome of using this technique, CAR T-Cell technology.
1. We have been working with E. coli for as long as we’ve had microbiology. But CRISPR
was not discovered until the 1980’s and it was not engineered into a tool until the last
decade. Now it can be used to engineer life. How can understanding that bacteria that was
inside us all along had a very special tool help make an argument for preserving
ecological diversity? In other words, why is understanding the history of CRISPR a good
argument for trying to keep as many species on earth alive as possible?
2. CRISPR is an engineering tool where scientists, specifically Jennifer Doudna, saw a tool
that was designed for one purpose and realized it could be used for a more powerful
purpose. Name another example of a product that you know that had one purpose, but can
be used efficiently for another purpose. As an example (Do not use this example), vinegar
is a food product, but someone realized that it was a really useful cleaning tool.
3. CRISPR/Cas has been touted as a way to engineer almost any organism. There are a
couple things that limit our use of the tool. The limitations of CRISPR are mentioned
both directly and indirectly in both the Radiolab podcast and the video. Please name one
limit to when and where we can use CRISPR?
4. Please watch Ellen Jorgensen’s TED talk on CRISPR. People say CRISPR is cheap and
easy. Who are we talking about when we say it is cheap and easy? In other words, can
you use CRISPR/Cas? Who can use it cheaply and easily?
5. We will talk about CAR T-Cells in class, but please watch the videos. We’ll talk about it
more in depth in class. CAR T-Cells are T-Cells that are modified in order to fight cancer
instead of invading cells. In all the links, they never say the word gene or genetics. Can
you tell me how CAR T-Cells are related to genetics? What about CAR T-Cell therapy is
related to genes?
6. The last article I linked to was an article about the cost of CAR T-Cell technology. It was
estimated the price of such therapy could be $600,000-800,000, but the owner of the
technology is marketing it at $450,000. They chose to make it cheaper. Is this fair? What
does this say about how we use technology? This is an opinion question, so there is no
wrong answer, but I need you to think through this. One of the best ways of proving you understand a concept is to explain it to someone else. In

this
case, I want you to take the following vocabulary and define the terms, words, or phrases for me.
Definitions should not exceed 100 words each. Make sure you are using your own words in the
definition; do not copy them from another source. Words to be defined are BOLD and
underlined.
For Week 10, we’re specifically talking about CRISPR/Cas and Car T-Cells in order to create an
introduction to the subjects of genetic engineering and human engineering.

Social Injustice From the War on Drugs

Social Injustice From the War on Drugs
As stated in the course description, the University is committed to social responsibility, supports social justice, and celebrates diversity.

Social justice is defined in many different ways depending on the entity that is making the definition. The entity making the definition defines it from the way they perceive the world. For the purposes of this writing assignment, social justice will be defined as conforming to the natural law that all persons irrespective of ethnic origin, gender, possessions, race, religion etc., are to be treated equally and without prejudice. Social justice also imposes on each member of society personal responsibility to work with others to design and continually perfect our institutions as tools for personal and social development.

With regards to law enforcement and social justice, many feel that law enforcement and the war on drugs creates social injustice by targeting minority and low income communities.

Write a 1,500-word paper that is APA formatted (not including the title, abstract, or reference page) paper that address how law enforcement and the war on drugs creates a social injustice on minority and low-income communities. Compare and contrast federal and state laws as they pertain to drugs in society and the most effective methodology for dealing with communities having a high drug problem and low-income issue. How do the communities relate with law enforcement as they address the problems?

Signature Assignment: Adverse Trend and Data Management

Read the following case study regarding an adverse trend in a health care setting.
An elderly patient has been admitted to the medical/surgical unit from the local nursing care facility. The new lab results in her electronic

health record (EHR) indicate that she has methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) in her urine. She is placed on contact precautions

per the hospital guidelines.
The health care provider arrives to examine her new patient and inquires about the need for contact precautions. The nurse explains the lab

results reveal the patient has MRSA in her urine. The health care provider states that she reviewed the patient’s lab results in the emergency

room and the urine results were normal. The unit coordinator reveals to the staff nurse and nurse manager that this is the third incident this

month of lab results being uploaded to the wrong patient’s EHR when admitted from the emergency department.
Write a 1,050 to 1,400-word paper based on the case study in which you:
Analyze the adverse trend, including how it affects patient care.
Evaluate the data that needs to be collected, reviewed, and applied in the decision-making process to address the adverse trend.
Evaluate the information system methods that will be used to collect the data needed in the decision-making process, including the source(s) of

the data.
Evaluate the information technology and tools needed in each step of the decision-making process.
Evaluate any regulatory, legal, ethical, political, sociocultural, and financial issues related to the data and information technologies that

will be used in the decision-making process.
Analyze at least two strategies used to advocate and access social justice in health care design and delivery.

Addiction & Obsession

EYZKUBE Addiction Study
This experiment is adapted from many posted across the internet. If you have done this experiment before, please complete again for this class as the

parameters have changed. I also highly recommend the “Take it up a notch” suggestion!

INTRODUCTION
This simulation allows each of you to experience, some of the physical, social, cognitive, and emotional experiences of a person who is actually

addicted to a drug. While no safe experiment can truly mirror addiction and its devastating consequences, this should give you valuable insight into

the life of an addict. It is the intent of the instructor that you use this to gain a better understanding of how addiction can take over the life of

an addict.

PROTOCOL
Beginning Sunday morning, you are to engage in this exercise until bedtime three days later. It will be more successful if you continue long that the

required 3 day minimum. If you start later in the week, make certain you start early enough to run this for at least 3 days. The more strictly you

adhere to the guidelines the more effective the exercise will be for you.

Your “Drug of Choice” is EYZKUBE.
You used to be able to ‘get off’ on simply water, but your addiction has progressed way beyond water. You now need specially processed water: EYZKUBE.
This is analogous to progressing from powder cocaine to crack cocaine.
THIRST is your craving for the “drug” – EYZKUBE.
Every time you take a drink of any liquid, you must have an EYZKUBE in the liquid. Yes, this will be difficult, and will require much planning.

ANTICIPATE!! This applies to all drinking situations including drinking fountains, cans or bottles, even late night drinks of water after you have

awakened from sleep.
This includes all hot drinks also!!
EYSKUBE is SOCIALLY UNACCEPTABLE AND ILLEGAL!!
Do not let ‘regular people’ see you or catch you using EYZKUBE. This applies to friends and family. The only people with whom it is acceptable to be

open about your use of EYZKUBE are other ‘addicts’ who are participating in this exercise. This will take some creative thinking at home, in

restaurants, and other public places.
DO NOT DO ANYTHING ILLEGAL TO OBTAIN EYSKUBE. THIS IS A SIMULATION. YOU MUST AT NO TIME GO AGAINST YOUR PERSONAL MORAL CODE OR BREAK REGULATION OR LAWS

TO COMPLETE THIS EXERCISE.
Obviously, do not endanger you physical health by not drinking enough liquids if you are engaged in vigorous physical activity.
TRACKS –
You must wear an unusual bracelet/anklet on your wrist/ankle during this simulation. What you choose is up to your discretion, but it should be

something that would make people wonder why you are wearing it: a piece of yarn, rubber band, hospital band.
Wear the bracelet at all times during this exercise. See this as analogous to an addict’s “tracks”, so it is socially unacceptable to wear the

bracelet. Try to hide your “tracks”(bracelet) from ‘regular people’ who might ask what it is about. If you ARE asked, you will need to explain it in a

way that does not create suspicion of your addiction. Remember, you are trying to hide your addiction from all ‘regular people’, including your family.
The bracelet will also serve to remind you that you are participating in the exercise. It will be easy to “forget” for a few hours, so you will have to

be diligent in your participation. Remember, real addicts cannot turn off their cravings at will.
DAILY LOG –. You can write about the reactions you received from ‘regular people’ when you lied and deceived them. Whatever you choose to write about,

just make sure you support your key points with explanations that will help me to understand how you felt while doing this exercise.
TAKE IT UP A NOTCH?
Want to take this to a new level?
You can kick it up a notch by requiring that EYZKUBE be tinted (e.g. ONLY red EYZKUBE or blue EYZKUBE can be used). Just like real drugs, you would not

be able to find these anywhere.
You will therefore need additional planning to get your “hits” of the drug. You can overcome this by carrying it with you at all times, having someone

serve as your “dealer” who you would need to regularly contact or my staying and becoming a recluse.
You will also need to take special efforts to hide taking your drug. Making EYESKUBE colored means you’ll have to hide it more – be more discrete – or

folks will surely ask you why you have a blue cube in your beer.

And then write 5 to 7 Paragraph about EYZKUBE Addiction Study challenge.
