Research Paper – Students will identify one topic of interest in leadership studies and write a research paper on the topic. Papers should be no less than 3,000 words (not including tile page or bibliography) and should include a minimum of 15 sources (your textbook may be one of these sources). The quality of your sources will be reflected in the quality of your paper, so use solid academic sources. Do not use Wikipedia or any Internet Web site that has not been approved in advance. Literary Analysis II

 
You’re only being asked to analyze one story, this is an opportunity to take an extremely focused approach in the analysis—narrowing your focus can give you a stronger foundation for developing your ideas. Remember that this is an academic essay: your writing must employ scholarly language and MLA or APA citation style. Be sure to have a clear thesis statement, identifiably separate body paragraphs to develop your analysis, and clear conclusion that goes beyond simply restating the main ideas. A strong organization will help deepen your analysis by revealing where you should develop your points more thoroughly. If you have questions about academic essay structure, don’t hesitate to ask.
In this essay, you are expected to do the following:
1. Select one of the themes of Postcolonial theory that you would like to explore. This will be the lens through which you look at the literature. If you’d like to continue the same theme from Essay 1, you are welcome to do that. If you’d like to choose something new, that is also fine. As before, if you would like to focus on a theme outside of our “Postcolonial themes” list, that shouldn’t be a problem, but it’s necessary to double-check with me.
2. Describe the lens and explain why you chose it for this particular literary work. What ideas can be included in that lens? Why is it a worthwhile lens for discussing the literature? Be specific.
3. Apply that lens to Heart of Darkness. This should be the bulk of your writing. How does the theme function within the story? What specific moments in the story are valuable for drawing deeper insights about the theme? Your analysis should include specific textual evidence, not simply general statements about the plot elements or characters. Ultimately, the analysis should answer this question: What does Heart of Darkness teach us about how (your chosen theme) works?

Your essay should be a Postcolonial analysis, not just a character study or a general discussion of symbols in the literature. This focus should not be difficult to maintain given that the 20th century literature we look at in this course is directly tied to actual colonial events. However, it’s worth reiterating that you are expected to apply Postcolonial theory. If you need any help working through those ideas, please ask. It’s part of my job, and I enjoy doing it.

In my experience, the most common mistake in writing about literature is to include too much plot summary. While you will obviously be referring to plot points in your analysis, your focus needs to be on analysis, not on re-telling the story. Write as though your audience is already familiar with the story: they may need a few brief reminders here and there, but they do not need you to rehash the entire plot.
You are welcome to bring outside sources into your essay, but do not over-rely on the ideas of others. Your sources should support your ideas, not stand in for your ideas. I highly recommend that you list your own ideas and insights before looking to outside sources, and that outside sources represent no more than 20% of the writing.

‘What is ecstasy (MDMA)? Identifying risks associated with both acute and chronic use’

You need to produce a 2,500 report on the above topic. The report is aimed at a government committee discussing the legal status of recreational drugs. In order to make their decision, the Members of Parliament (MPs) on the committee require a report that summarises the literature to date on risks (e.g. acute risks, long-term neuropsychological damage, risks to mental health) associated with taking ecstasy. Please follow the guidance below when writing your report.
Consider your audience. The MPs are not psychologists or pharmacologists therefore your report should be aimed at someone with no knowledge of the topic. This means that you must explain the pharmacology of ecstasy and the strengths and weaknesses of research clearly and concisely, giving definitions and explanations of all technical, pharmacological and psychological terms used.
Structure your report into different sections with relevant subheadings. Your report should not be one continuous piece of text. The amount of sections and headings is up to you, but the report should start with a 250 word (max) summary, similar to an abstract for a research report.
Consider what the MPs need to know. A brief discussion of what the drug is, how it works and patterns of use may be a good way to introduce them to effects of this drug.
Base your report on original journal articles. You will not find enough information on this topic in textbooks.
Evaluate the research you cite. The MPs need to know the limitations of research in this area in order to make an informed decision based on the scientific literature.
Your report should describe and evaluate research findings as objectively as possible. You are not required to make a recommendation to MPs about changing the legal status of ecstasy (MDMA) so your report should focus on unbiased reporting of scientific findings.

Reforming the ICJ
The reform that is suggested is design to be applied to the International Court of Justice. A Compulsory Jurisdictional Principle is proposed in order to make disputing states accept the jurisdiction and the decisions made by the ICJ. The ICJ lacks the ability to implement its ruling on disputing states due to the issue of sovereignty, and this causes the limited effectiveness of the ICJ. This reform is proposed due to the fact that as a World Court, trying to settle disputed between sovereign states, the ICJ should have jurisdiction on member states and its decisions should be adhered to. Taking cases to the ICJ and then neglecting its decision is a waste of time and money for both disputing states and the ICJ, it also causes a concern as to what other issues might rise due to the convicted state neglecting the ICJ’s decision. Thus, this reform is recommendedand it will be proposed in accordance with the WTO jurisdiction principle.

Students will write a two page analytical paper on the following topic.
As an esteemed scholar with expertise in (the international organization of your choice– the International Court of Justice of United Nations), you have been invited to brief the representatives of the organization’s lead decision-making body on how and why the organization should adopt a specific reform (of your choice– A Compulsory Jurisdictional Principle). This paper will be circulated to the member state representatives of the council.
Use at least five scholarly sources and cite them as footnotes, using Chicago style. The writing style should be concise and argumentative. Your main argument should be clear by the end of the second sentence and reiterated in your concluding paragraph. Avoid jargon. Be aware of your audience. Be sure to ALSO discuss:
1. The benefits of such a reform (are they short-term/long-term? Is there evidence that it worked elsewhere? How effective was it? If not, why are you confident that it will be successful? Timeframe?) 
You should refer to the WTO (World Trade Organization) when you talk about if this reform has worked elsewhere and has been successful. I uploaded a PDF in which it briefly talks about how this has been implemented in the WTO.
2. The costs of such a reform (who will pay? what will it cost? Is there a risk of lives lost?)
3. The political feasibility of the reform (Can states convince domestic audiences? What 
political challenges should be expected in negotiations? Whose support is needed?)
Some additional suggestions by the professor for this topic:
1. The effectiveness of the WTOcompulsory jurisdictional principle. When was it instituted? And why? And then show how it can be implemented on ICJ.
2. Mention ICJ goal –mission statement(Article 94 of UN Charter). ICJ implantation and compliance problem with state agreements, example: US v. Nicaragua case. Look at WTO and what case used this principle.
3. Optional: Look at other IO might have used this approach, Why you think it is important to make the comparison
Tip: Start by writing a three or four page paper. Then revise by shortening it down to two pages.
