You will need to use two sources to write this critique analysis. The first source is your textbook. (SOCIOLOGY BY RICHARD T. SCHAEFER). Your textbook will assist you in better understanding your article and writing your critique.
The second source is an article from a peer-reviewed journal published within the last five years that addresses a sociological concept or topic of interest to you. The article you select to write your critique analysis must be data-driven. That is, the research study must incorporate the experimental or correlational research design. Moreover, the article must have the major components of a research study (i.e., An Abstract, introduction, Methodology, Results, and Discussion sections) you must use the ASA Style manual to write your paper. Here’s the format for writing your paper:
1. A title page with the title in the middle of the page
2. Page numbering in the upper right corner beginning with 1 on the title page
3. In-text citations in ASA format (that means the citation follows either the quote or the paraphrase of the information provided)

Your assignment is to write an original econometric research paper, using the IPUMS CPS data, accessible at https://cps.ipums.org/cps/ , to research an economic question of your choice. Your paper should pose a question, develop a hypothesis, and then apply the econometric skills developed in class to analyze the issue empirically. In addition to answering an economic question based on the data, three tests should be included in the analysis: multicollinearity, heteroskedasticity, and serial correlation (if necessary).Because the CPS samples have a large number of observations over a large number of years, it is likely a good idea to limit your research to a certain geographic area and time period, as well any other data restrictions that are appropriate for your research question.

IPUMS-CPS is an integrated set of data spanning more than 50 years (1962-forward) of the Current Population Survey (CPS). The CPS is a monthly U.S. household survey conducted jointly by the U.S. Census Bureau and the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Initiated in the 1940s in the wake of the Great Depression, the survey was designed to measure unemployment. A battery of labor force and demographic questions, known as the “basic monthly survey,” is asked every month. Over time, supplemental inquiries on special topics have been added for particular months. Among these supplemental surveys, the Annual Social and Economic Supplement conducted in March (hereafter referred to as the ASEC) is the most widely used by social scientists and policymakers.
IPUMS is not a collection of compiled statistics; it is composed of microdata. Each record is a person, with all characteristics numerically coded. Because the data are individuals and not tables, researchers must use a statistical package to analyze the millions of records in the database. A data extraction system enables users to select only the samples and variables they require. You will need to register with the IPUMS-CPS website to extract data. IPUMS produces fixed-column ASCII data (a text file).
In addition to the ASCII data file, the system creates a statistical package syntax file to accompany each extract. The syntax file is designed to read in the ASCII data while applying appropriate variable and value labels. SPSS, SAS, and Stata are supported. You must download the syntax file with the extract or you will be unable to read the data. The syntax file requires minor editing to identify the location of the data file on your local computer.A codebook file is also created with each extract. Introduction
This activity is an opportunity for you to closely examine a contemporary policy issue facing the state of Texas. Over its history, the Texas government has had many conflicts with the national government as part of the dynamics in a federal system of governance. These disputes have heated up in recent years, and include immigration policy, education policy, environmental policy, social welfare policy and many others issues. Select one of personal interest and objectively outline the nature of the dispute. This will allow you to work towards finding a solution.
Take into consideration constitutional/legal issues along with political, economic and cultural differences. Look at the history underlying the dispute, how it is playing out within the governing institutions, and how it may be resolved. It is strongly suggested that you use the library database at the start of the semester to begin researching a topic. This assignment requires carefully planning throughout the semester. Refer to the course calendar for the specific due date. The final draft is to be submitted via the submission guidelines identified by the instructor.
The grading standards used to assess the quality of your work for this policy paper will be detailed in a grading rubric, which will be provided during the semester. Completing this activity is a mandatory component of this course. It serves as the standard course assessment for all GOVT 2306 students. Failure to submit this project in its entirety will result in a failing grade for the course.
There are four steps to completing this project:
Step 1: Identify the issue and how the policies of both the US government and Texas government have been addressing it historically.
Step 2: Conduct research to locate three (3) peer-reviewed articles published in an academic journal (aka: scholarly sources) using the following criteria:
