Self-Defense/Defense of Others and the Bible

Self-Defense/Defense of Others and the Bible
In 1987, Florida became a “shall issue” concealed carry state, which opened a floodgate of states who adopted similar laws. Currently, all 50 states allow some form of concealed carry. This has brought attention to many theories of self-defense and defense of others.

Please discuss the following:
Define the Castle Doctrine and Stand Your Ground laws.
Discuss the concept of self-defense as it appears in the Bible.
Can one reconcile saving his/her own life at the expense of another’s life from a biblical standpoint?
Compare the Bible’s teachings on self-defense and murder.

Literature Review-Geriatric Paper

To locate and review research about the management of a geriatric patient in the dental setting. A geriatric patient presenting with dry mouth from specific medications. How would you manage that patient? What would their treatment plan be? What products would you use during treatment or recommend? (55 + years or older) Resources must be of a scientific nature, *PEER REVIEWED*, and evidence based. Review must provide proper citation of sources. Length of review should be between 5 and 6 pages (size 11 font and double space). The purpose is to provide an overview of significant literature published on a topic.
Resources that can be used: JADA, Access, Dimensions of Dental Hygiene

www.perio.org
www.adea.org
COMPONENTS: *Similar to the primary research, development of the literature review requires four stages:
1. Problem formation-which topic or field is being examined? (Geriatric patient presenting with dry mouth from medications). What are the common components of the clinical behavior aspects of providing care?
2. Literature research- finding credible and reviewed materials relevant to the subject being explored.
3.Understanding the topic.
4. Analysis and interpretation- discussing the findings and conclusions of pertinent literature.

Information Technology Systems as Socio-Technical Systems

Which was more important in shaping the final outcome in Painter’s case study—the organization’s technical system or its social system? What STS

principles discussed in Painter’s case can be generalized to any project?

Describe what you see as the critical elements of both the technical system and the social system, and how they interacted over the course of

the implementation. Identify what you see as the key turning points in the process, and how the resolution reflected the influence and function

of each system.

Synthesis Essay

Your Assignment

In this activity you’ll examine six sources that explore the concept of democracy, and then write a synthesis essay. Your essay should be

two to four single-spaced pages.

Democracy is government by the people, usually through elected representatives. In today’s world, democracy is the most popular form of

government, yet, since its modern inception in eighteenth century America, many have questioned the value and success of democracy. What is

the value and purpose of democracy? Is it merely an ideal that can never be realized? Are governments that call themselves democratic truly

democratic?

Before you read the sources, reflect on your own prior knowledge and opinions regarding the success of democracy. Then, read the following

sources carefully (including any introductory information), making sure to take notes on your interpretations, questions, and reactions to

the excerpts as you read. Some questions to consider while reading:

• What do these passages have in common?
• How many main ideas do these sources explore? And what are these ideas?
• What contradictions, if any, are apparent in these sources?
• How many sources will I use in my essay?
• How will I cite these sources in my essay?
• How will I synthesize these sources into a coherent argument?

In an essay that synthesizes at least three of the sources for support, take a position that defends, challenges, or qualifies the claim

that democracy has succeeded in modern society.

To begin your essay, create a thesis statement that states your position on the effectiveness of democracy, and come up with two to four

reasons that you will use to uphold this position. Remember that your evidence can be your own opinion (supported with concrete detail) and

material from the six sources.

The body of your essay should include paragraphs that support your position. At least three sources must be cited in the essay, and you

should reinforce your opinions with concrete details. You may refer to the sources by their titles (Source A, Source B, etc.), or by the

descriptions in parentheses.

Source A (Churchill)
Source B (Lowell)
Source C (Graph) x
Source D (Anonymous) x
Source E (Burgess)
Source F (Guinier) x

Again, remember to use the sources to support your position. Do not focus your essay on paraphrasing or summarizing the sources.

To create a polished essay, write a conclusion that ties the evidence you’ve used in the essay’s body back to your original thesis

statement.

formal and informal bureaucracy

formal and informal bureaucracy
In a 500-word (minimum) essay, using the concepts that you learned from this week’s readings analyze the different ways that sexist behavior is handled in

the formal and informal bureaucracy. The following questions should answered in the essay.

The following questions should be answered in the essay.

Does Shirley Wright’s comment make you more or less likely to file a formal complaint? Do you agree with the likely punishment? If not, what alternative

punishment would you suggest?
Do you agree with Ron DesVue’s perspective where he says you should speak to the individuals? Why or why not?
Do you agree or disagree with Hugh Jim Bissell on using your smart phone to make a recording? Why or why not?
Should you take Frieda Choose’s advice that “boys will be boys,” and that there is a general expectation that men will occasionally behave badly, and so

long as the behavior is kept between privately, it should be ignored? Why do you think she distinguishes between sexist remarks and racist remarks? Explain

your answer.
Is there a problem with the organization in the scenario above? If so, what should be done to provide a long-term solution to the problem?

You need to decide if you want to file a formal complaint. If you do, the matter will be investigated. If what you say can be substantiated then the young

men will be reprimanded. That usually results in their employment being terminated and their student loans/financial aid may be in put in jeopardy.

Shirley Wright
Manager of Student Employees

I don’t care what your boss says; this is inappropriate behavior for the workplace, even if they are on break. They should learn to stop this kind of

behavior before they graduate. It’s the sort of thing that could get you fired in the real world. If I were you, I would, informally, have a word with them

and tell them that I was offended. Once they have been informed that they offended someone, they may decide to change their behavior on their own.

Ron DesVue
30-year-old veteran, student and classmate

Hey, you got a smart phone, don’t you? First thing I’d do is record their conversation on my phone. Don’t let them know you’re recording it. The next time

they have one of those conversations tell them that you find it offensive and ask them to stop it. If they refuse or give you a hard time, tell them that

you have a recording of their sexist comments and you’ll take it to the boss. They don’t need to know how the boss feels; the threat should be good enough

to get them to stop, at least when you are around.

Hugh Jim Bissell
Close friend since high school and current classmate

Let’s not turn this into a federal case. I’d say as long as they’re having these conversations in private, among themselves then it’s not any of your

business. After all, boys will be boys. These are young, single men, and this is a way that they bond, work out frustrations, and blow off steam. Look,

it’s not like they’re making racist remarks. In that case, I definitely go straight to the boss, even higher up the chain of command, if I needed to. After

all, who hasn’t told a dirty joke now and then? As long as they keep it on the down low, it’s no big deal.

Frieda Choose
Close friend and classmate

Video Script
Characters: Bolo Czopek and his wife, Izabella Czopek
Setting: Bolo is sitting at a table (in an apartment or rental home) with pencil, papers, blueprints, and calculator, intently working. There are also gardening magazines and dishes sitting on the table. He may be talking to himself as he does his calculating.

Izabella Oh, its so exciting to finally be here in Colorado —a lifelong dream—to be back to nature! But it’s going to take me and my ol’ bike a while to get used to these hills!
Bolo Uh huh.
Izabella So, how’s it going?
Bolo It’s going well. It’s coming along.
We’d like to have the house completed by October, just to give the new landscaping a few months to settling in before winter. But that gives Silver Fiddle Construction Company only five months to complete the whole thing.
Izabella This is so exciting!—but five months? That’s not very long. Do you think they can do it?
Bolo Well, the president of Silver Fiddle’s coming over in about an hour to discuss a few last-minute details and plans, so we’ll find out then.
Izabella But, didn’t they mention that they might be able to give us a price break if we could be flexible on the finish date?
Bolo They did, and I guess it would be worth it to cut costs a bit.
Izabella I agree. Then we could use some of the saved money for wallpapering or new furniture. By the way, did Silver Fiddle tell you how much the house is going to cost?
Bolo Well, it’s a custom home, and with all the special requests we asked for, they’re estimating somewhere between $290,000 and $320,000.
Izabella That sounds like a lot…
Bolo But it’s really not bad for a 2,500-square-foot home with 2-1/2 baths, and 2 bedrooms, and a 3-car finished garage-Boy! Won’t it be great to put our canoes, and our kayaks and 4-wheelers in there? Who knows, maybe we’ll even have room for the cars!
Izabella I can’t wait to have a new, custom kitchen with a center island and windows that overlook the valley view! Oh, and there are several appliances— the microwave, the oven, the dishwasher, and the trash compactor.
Bolo Oh, that reminds me, we need to tell Silver Fiddle that the house should come with a high-efficiency gas furnace with programmable thermostat.
Izabella …and we told them about the landscaping plans at the last meeting…
Bolo That was one of the first things we discussed, even though we’re planning on handling the landscaping ourselves. Here’s the latest version—complete with wildflower garden, perennial garden, a stone wall, and a fountain! So, what do you think?
Izabella I can already picture it! And I’ve already selected about 40 different kinds of plants, flowers and trees. But, I’m going to have to pare down the list a little, or we may have to buy another 5 acres!
Bolo Maybe not. First things first. Let’s get the house built.
Izabella I’m so glad that the Martins told us about Silver Fiddle. They’ve been really happy with the work on their house.
Bolo Still, we have to expect a few bumps in the road. You know how the weather and supply availability can affect a building project.
Izabella Well, maybe the president of Silver Fiddle’s can tell us about the associated risks with our project.
Bolo Yes, after our meeting, they’ll be laying out any potential risk and laying out a game plan for us.
Izabella Oh! It’s almost 7 o’clock and they’re gonna be here in an hour so, we better start getting picked up get this place picked up, and um…
Bolo I’ll start the coffee.
