reflection paper

Part I:
Length: 4-6 pages (excluding cover and reference pages)
(NOTE: the page limit will be strictly adhered to; nothing over the maximum limit will be marked).
Format: APA
Due date: week 5

This personal reflection paper is a ‘work-in-progress’, designed to build upon each week’s learning, and to facilitate reflection and analysis

of your current approach to practice. The purpose is to identify how you describe each of the nursing metaparadigm concepts at the beginning of

the course; why you describe each as you do.
• At the conclusion of the first week of class, for each of the four concepts of the nursing metaparadigm (person, health, environment and

nursing) write a short paragraph (point form is fine) defining each concept (i.e. what do each of these concepts mean to you?) Provide a clear

example from your own practice to support your description for each concept.

• By the end of week 3, review your description of each metaparadigm concept and expand your on-paper discussion to include the reasons

why you described each concept as you did. Using Mezirow’s (1990) framework for reflective practice, describe what influenced your thinking

about each of the concepts. This answers
the question: Whydid I write what I wrote? Why did I define each concept the way I did?

• By the end of week 4, review your work-in-progress to date. Based on your descriptions of each of the metaparadigm concepts and your

reasons for describing them as you did, i) determine which world view (paradigm) your thinking represents and ii) explain why, using Parse’s

(1987) framework for
paradigm analysis. This constitutes the analysis component of this assignment.

• This paper is to be submitted to Turnitin through Learning Management System by midnight of the day preceding the submission date.

Submission instructions for additional hard or electronic copy will be provided by the instructor no less than one week before the paper is due.

• Feedback on this initial assignment will be provided by week 7.

Assignment: Applying the Concepts

Companies often develop and test hypotheses about their products. Regulatory and consumer protection groups must also test claims resulting from

hypotheses used to promote products.

Submit a 1- to 2-page paper that addresses the following: Assume you are working at the Consumer Protection Agency. Recently, you have been

getting complaints about the highway gas mileage of a new minivan. The car company agrees to allow you to select randomly 41 of its new minivans

to test their highway mileage. The company claims that its minivans get 28 miles per gallon on the highway. Your test results show a sample mean

of 26.7 and a sample standard deviation of 4.2.

Part 1 (Confidence Interval):
• Calculate a 95% confidence interval around your sample mean.
• Is the claimed mean inside your confidence interval?
• What does your result mean, in terms of the company’s claim?

Part 2 (Two-tail test):
• List the null and alternative hypotheses for the appropriate test.
• Use alpha = 0.05. Find the critical value(s) and calculate the observed value of the test statistic.
• Is the observed test statistic in the critical (rejection) region?
• Will the p-value be higher or lower than your alpha? What does this result mean, in terms of the company’s claim?

Part 3 (One-tail test):
• List the null and alternative hypotheses for the test.
• Use alpha = 0.05.
• Find the critical value and calculate the observed value of the test statistic.
• Is the observed test statistic in the critical region?
• Will the p-value be higher or lower than your alpha?
• What does this result mean, in terms of the company’s claim?

Part 4 (Conclusion):
• What conclusions did you reach?
• What did you learn from each method of checking the claim for means?
• Were there important differences between methods? Which method would you prefer?
• Which carries a higher risk of a type I error?
• Based on this experience, why do you think it’s important to decide on the method before conducting the test?
• Based on your results, do you support the company’s claim?
• What action, if any, should the company take?

Note: The 1- to 2-page requirement does not include the graphs you prepare for this Assignment. Embed the graphs you create in the Word document

with your written responses to the questions. Drawings may be hand-drawn and either scanned or photographed, or they may be drawn using Minitab

or other statistical drawing packages.

Use the rubric to make sure you are answering each question correctly.

Introduction to management

Assignment requirements.

This assignment can not be longer than 1,000 words(not including your organization chart) based on the commentaryprovided 10. Please use Microsoft Word or a compatible rich text format (.rtf) when preparing your essay, and Word, Excel, or a .pdf format when preparing the organizational chart.

Although much of the assignment content is based on Lesson 10, you may find the content in the other lessons helpful, especially as you evaluate the organization.

The assignment as to have all the below information as follows.

Evaluate the structure of an organization of your choosing. Provide an organization chart for the top three or four levels of the organization (20 marks).

As part of your evaluation, assess the appropriateness of the method of departmentalization (20 marks), as well as the implications for authority (20 marks) and job design (20 marks). Conclude your evaluation with your recommendation for how this organization should be organized (10 marks).

In preparing your evaluation, keep in mind that you are expected to express yourself in a well-written, error-free essay (10 marks).

As you work on this assignment, don’t lose sight of the fact that you are being asked to evaluate the organizational structure. So while you will definitely have to describe it, you must also evaluate whether or not its various aspects are appropriate in light of what you know about this organization. In other words, you have to decide whether it is the rightstructure in light of the organization’s goals and objectives. Another thing to note here is that, while the structures of smaller organizations will be more easily evaluated, sufficient information about them will be more difficult to come by unless you choose an organization with which you are familiar. The final thing to note here is that, for this assignment, you may use the organization for which you work or one for which you have worked in the past.

As with Assignment 1, you are once again being asked to achieve the assignment’s objective with a well-crafted essay of no more than 1,000 words (not including your organization chart). As before, please ensure that your name, your student ID, and the name of your organization are clearly stated at the start of your assignment. (This information is not included in the 1,000-word maximum.) When your assignment is complete, return to this page and follow the instructions at the bottom of the page to submit it.

Close Reading of a Short Story

10% of Final Grade
3-4 Revised Pages

Guidelines:

Select a short story that we have read and discussed in class. Write three to four pages that analyze and interpret the story, paying attention to

relevant components, such as characterization, images, metaphors, descriptive phrases, etc. Your ideas should be organized and reflected in a thesis

statement, and supported with evidence throughout your essay.

Make no use of outside research, and refer to Charters’ The Story and Its Writer, “Reading Short Stories” and “Writing About Short Stories” for

additional guidance.

Below, you will find step-by-step guidance that should mirror our in-class discussion process and out-of-class reading.

To do a close reading, you choose a specific passage, or series of passages, or recurring elements, and analyze it/them in fine detail, as if with a

magnifying glass. You then comment on points of style and on your reactions as a reader. Close reading is important because it is the building block for

larger analysis. Your thoughts evolve not from someone else’s truth about the reading, but from your own observations. The more closely you can observe,

the more original and exact your ideas will be. To begin your close reading, ask yourself several specific questions about the passage. The following

questions are not a formula, but a starting point for your own thoughts. When you arrive at some answers, you are ready to organize and write.

First Impressions:
What is the first thing you notice about the passage?
What is the second thing?
Do the two things you noticed complement each other? Or contradict each other?
What mood does the passage create in you? Why?

Vocabulary and Diction:
Which words do you notice first? Why? What is noteworthy about this diction?
How do the important words relate to one another?
Do any words seem oddly used to you? Why?
Do any words have double meanings? Do they have extra connotations?
Look up any unfamiliar words.

Discerning Patterns:
Does an image here remind you of an image elsewhere? Where? What’s the connection?
How might this image fit into the pattern of the piece as a whole?
Could a passage serve as a microcosm—a little picture—of what’s taking place in the whole work?
What is the sentence rhythm like? Short and choppy? Long and flowing? Does it build on itself or stay at an even pace?
Look at the punctuation. Is there anything unusual about it?
Is there any repetition within the passage? What is the effect of that repetition?
How many types of writing are in the passage? (For example, narration, description, argument, dialogue, rhymed or

alliterative poetry, etc.)
Can you identify paradoxes [a seemingly contradictory statement that may nonetheless be true] in the author’s

thought or subject?
What is left out or kept silent? What would you expect the author to talk about that the author avoided?
Point of View and Characterization:
How does the passage make us react or think about any characters or events within the narrative?
Are there colors, sounds, physical descriptions that appeal to the senses? Does this imagery form a pattern? Why might the

author have chosen that color, sound or physical description?
Who speaks in the passage? To whom does he or she speak? Does the narrator have a limited or partial point of view? Or

does the narrator appear to be omniscient, and he knows things the characters couldn’t possibly know (for

example, future historical events, events taking place “off stage,” the thoughts and feelings of multiple characters,

and so on).
Symbolism:
Are there metaphors? What kinds?
Is there one controlling metaphor? If not, how many different metaphors are there, and in what order do they occur? How

might that be significant?
How might objects represent something else?
Do any of the objects, colors, animals, or plants appearing in the passage have traditional connotations or meaning?

What about religious significance?

Epidemiological report

To help you plan your epidemiological report and to get feedback from your module leader, complete the following questions. Keep this outline

to 2 pages maximum. A submission link will be available on Moodle

Brief introduction

• What is the rationale for the study?

• How does it fit into current the social, political, economic or health care context?

• Why is the outcome measure(s) important?

• Is there a supporting theory for the study?

Research question(s)

Based on what you have said in the background, introduction and literature review sections, what is the specific research question that aim to

answer through your study?

(Use, the PICO method to do this – see Moodle). This should be one or two very specific research questions that are achievable using the

methods that you propose. For example: a) describing trends over time or across populations in a health outcome or health behaviour; b)

describing relationships between and exposures, outcomes and/or behaviours (150 words)).

Methods:

• What is the source of the data?

• Is it individual or aggregated data?

• What study design will you use?

• What is the sample size?

• What are the sampling methods?

• What are the main variables of interest?

Writing Assignment2

Using the company you currently work with or one with which you would like to work, describe how they try to manage their brand (or one of their brands)

in a given target market.

Please see Assignment Instructions attached.

All answers should be completed on the attached worksheet.

What to do: Answer each of these questions

Using the company you currently work with or one with which you would like to work, describe how they try to manage their brand (or one of their brands)

in a given target market.

Your answer should include the following parts. Explanations of what is expected are provided, here, and an example of a completed assignment in on the

next page.

1. Name of the company/organization. Be sure to identify the parent company. For instance, you might use “General Mills” as the company.

2. Name of the brand you are analyzing. If you chose, “General Mills”, you might select “Yoplait” or “Cheerios” as a specific brand to analyze.

3. Description of a specific target market. You may not find this listed on a website, and you may have to make a logical guess of who the target market

is, based on what you know about the people who use the brand you choose. If you choose a brand that targets individual consumers, refer to pages 161 –

176 for approaches to describing a market segment. Recall that multiple segmentation approaches are often used simultaneously (see, p. 176), so your

description should incorporate multiple approaches. If you choose a brand that targets business customers, refer to Exhibit 6.14 on p. 177 for

additional assistance.

4. The brand’s brand identity – state what qualities and/or emotional connections you believe the company wants the target market to have with this

brand. This will be a relatively short description. To arrive at this description use your own thoughts, along with what you read on the brand’s website

or in articles about the brand.

5. Two ways the company tries to establish its brand’s perceived quality – state two examples of things the company does to build the target market’s

perception of the quality of this brand.

6. Two influences outside the company on how consumers perceive the brand’s quality – Companies are not the only entities that influence their brands.

Popular culture (such as trending stories on Twitter), other consumers (friends and online reviews) and un-paid media outlets (such as late night

television hosts) can all influence how we perceive a given brand. List two ways an outside entity has influenced (intentionally or not) the perceived

quality of the brand you choose.

7. Benefits of brand equity – The book describes how three benefits of positive brand equity (perceived quality, brand connections, and brand loyalty)

link to strategy (pages 245-247). Provide two specific examples of how the benefits of brand equity for the brand you choose links to the company’s

strategy for that brand. Your descriptions can be relatively short, similar to the examples given in these respective sections of the textbook.

textbook.

Formatting Guidelines.
Please type your answers into the Writing Assignment 2 Worksheet, provided in Class Module 3.
Example
1. Name of the company/organization. General Mills
2. Name of the brand you are analyzing. Yoplait
3. Description of a specific target market.
The Yoplait brand has many products that target different segments. As an example, a specific target market for the Yoplait Greek Yogurt products is

most likely young adults (millennials or younger Gen X), middle-to-upper-middle class income earners, seeking a healthy lifestyle.
4. The brand’s brand identity –Yoplait’s brand identity appears to be “A flavorful, joyful, trusted yogurt” To arrive at this description I used my

own thoughts, along with what I read on the brand’s website and here, http://www.brand-image.com/work/strategy/yoplait.
5. Two ways the company tries to establish its brand’s perceived quality –
a. Example 1:Packaging – vivid, playful colors with a simple design and clear details about calories, fat content, etc. (especially on the Greek

yogurt products)
b. Example 2:Advertising – showing confident, happy, people who fit each product’s respective target market (example, the “You Got This, Mom On”

Yoplait commercials), with a positive message about the person and the product (“You Got This, Mom On” ads end with “and the kids love it!”).
6. Two influences outside the company on how consumers perceive the brand’s quality –
a. Example 1: Social Media – pins on Pinterest are one source, and the company website shows that they try to be a part of that media to influence

how they are being discussed/represented.
b. Example 2: Other Consumers – word of mouth (good or bad) about the product from friends or family.
7. Benefits of brand equity –
a. Link 1: Brand Connections – the overall familiarity with the Yoplait brand is likely a key factor allowing the brand to market such a broad line

of yogurt products.
b. Link 2: Perceived Quality – While the brand’s perceived quality was historically a benefit, changes in the yogurt market are decreasing this

benefit. For example, as consumer preferences change towards more wholesome ingredients and new competitors move faster to target these preferences,

Yoplait sales are sliding in 2017 (http://fortune.com/2017/05/22/general-mills-yoplait-greek-yogurt/). This is causing the company to rethink its

overall position and marketing strategy in various yogurt market segments.

Economic export and import in the USA

Economic export and import in the USA

Find one or more articles about a good/service the United States exports and a good/service the United States imports. In a well-written paper, explain the following:

Discuss what this suggests about the United States’ absolute and comparative advantage when it comes to this good/service.
Using the concepts of supply and demand, discuss what effect a “Buy American” campaign might have in the market for the imported good.
Given what economists have to say about comparative advantage, would such a campaign be good or bad?
