Doing Sociology #3 – The Fashion Police: Gender and the Rules of Beauty DUE_______________________

BACKGROUND
Gender role socialization starts with a baby wrapped in pink or blue and continues to permeate every stage of our lives from there. Messages about what it means to be a girl or a boy are everywhere. We are told over and over, and in a million subtle ways, what is appropriate or desirable for each sex. Ideas about masculinity and femininity are played out innumerable times across an expanding media landscape. Gender norms reflect our ideals about beauty, style, fitness, and physical or sexual attractiveness, and examples of these ideal are on constant display – on our TVs and touch screens, in the grocery store, and at the bus stop. We can’t avoid them.

ASSIGNMENT
In this assignment, you will closely examine the covers of men’s and women’s magazines to discover what they have to say about gender and the rules of beauty. Choose one magazine that focuses on women’s fashion or fitness and one magazine that focuses on men’s fashion or fitness.

Some suggestions – For Women: Vogue, Elle, Essence, Glamour, Latina, InStyle, Shape, Women’s Health, Yoga, Runner’s World, etc. For Men: Details, Esquire, GQ, Maxim, Krave, Men’s Health, Men’s Journal, Men’s Journal, Outside, etc.

Locate a recent of issues of each of the two magazines you’ve chosen; you can find a hard copy at a bookstore, library, newsstand, or you can access a digital issues online. You will do a content analysis of each magazine cover. Immerse yourself in all the visual elements and text on each cover. Look at the general display and layout, the specific photos, and any other kinds of graphics. Scrutinize the headlines and which words were used. All of this becomes your data. As you examine the covers more closely, consider the following questions:

  • How are the cover models presented? Describe their body type. Does it reflect the ideals for masculine and feminine beauty? How are they posing? What does their posture, facial expressions, gestures, or other physical attributes convey?
  • How are the cover models styled? Describe their clothing, hair, makeup, and accessories. Are the cover models engaged in any activities? What do their actions (or inaction) tell us about who they are?
  • What is the background or scene of the magazine cover? Does it appear to be taken in a studio, or is it a location shot of some kind? What does the background convey?
  • What colors are used for the magazine cover? Look at the background, the title, and any kind of text or added graphics. What, if any, are the other visual aspects of the cover?
  • What words and phrases appear on the cover? Which words are bold, italicized, in capital letters, in larger or smaller font sizes, and why? What is the overall tone? What are the explicit and implicit messages embedded in the words?
  • As a whole, what are the major themes and patterns that emerge from the cover? DO these themes support or challenge gender norms and the rules of beauty? Besides gender, do other factors of intersectionality – race, class, age, or sexual orientation – seem to affect the message?
  • Compare and contrast the women’s and the men’s magazines. What are the similarities and differences between the two covers, and how do you explain them? How do you think such magazines influence how we see ourselves and others?

Reminder – I do not allow direct quotes in student’s work in this class.  You need to paraphrase and cite your outside sources.  “Outside sources” do not include the text and so you don’t need to cite it.

1)           The text lists three qualities of audit evidence that contribute to that evidence’s persuasiveness.  Describe each of the three and discuss how it contributes to the persuasiveness of the evidence.  Also, discuss whether all three must be satisfied for auditors to be assured that they have gather sufficiently persuasive evidence to be reasonably assured of their audit conclusions.

Hint – This is a relatively descriptive question that can be answered directly from the text.  Just remember to put things in your own words.  Keep in mind that appropriateness consists of two issues:  relevance and reliability.  I want you to address them separately.

2)           Audit documentation is the sole property of the auditor.

Hint – Chapter 4 only makes a limited and incomplete statement about working paper ownership and the conditions under which the auditor may be forced to release working papers to parties other than the client.  You will need to review the discussion of Confidentiality Client Information rule in Chapter 2 to accurately answer this question.  Parts a) and b) are descriptive and can be answer from the text.  Just remember to post in your own words.  However, c) is an opinion issue that asks you to consider the competing needs to protect the client and to protect the public by complying with courts and regulators as well as the need for the auditor to minimize litigation risk and protect their working papers.

a) Under what conditions can or must the auditor release this documentation to the client? What are some risks involved in releasing audit working papers to clients?
b) Under what conditions must the auditor release this documentation to third parties?
c) Do you believe the current regulations regarding the retention and release of audit documents are adequate to protect the auditor, the client, and the users of financial statements?

Choose two publicly-held organizations. One organization must have high fixed costs and low variable costs, and the other organization must have low fixed costs and high variable costs.

Note: A publicly-held organization is a private-sector firm that is owned by stock holders. Companies with high fixed costs include manufacturing companies, such as automobile manufactures, whereas service companies, such as accounting firms, might have low fixed costs.

Create a minimum 8-slide Microsoft® PowerPoint® presentation, including detailed speaker notes or voiceover, analyzing the methods of managing cost depending on the cost construction. Research the University Library for recent publications regarding each company and the industry data. The analysis should include the following:

  • Analyze your two chosen companies’ cost construction. Do the companies have high fixed costs or low fixed costs? Do the companies have high variable costs or low variable costs? What evidence presents itself to support your findings?
  • In Excel®, chart the relationship between total cost and the number of units produced (output) for each organization/company. Plot two lines on the graph – one line for each company you analyzed. Copy your graph from Excel® and paste it into your PowerPoint® presentation.
  • Analyze currently used methods to minimize costs for the companies and provide recommendations how to improve the process of minimizing costs based on the available information for the industries in which the companies operate. Note: Companies are categorized by the industries they operate in. For example, Wal-Mart is a company operating within the retail trade industry.
