Leadership report

As you prepare to conduct the Application Assignment – Leadership
Report, you will apply your understanding of theory and research to
identify actual leadership styles and practices that support school or
district improvement processes.

There are five stages to this Application Assignment –Leadership Report.

Stage 1: Introduction: Problem, Issue, or Topic

Assignment Directions:
o Reflect on readings about leadership style, theories, and research
to identify questions about key leadership traits, dispositions, or
practices that support school or district improvement processes.
o Review the literature with the following questions in mind: In what
way does the literature address how leaders can effectively approach
problems, issues, or topics? What leadership theory or styles are
recommended as the accepted practices that result in successful school
or district improvement processes? [Review a minimum of three (3)
current (5 YRS) articles that support leaders’ practices and
dispositions to support school or district improvement processes
o Based on your knowledge about best practices, identify two
individuals (Patricia Romendetto and Mark Alter) who demonstrate
practices and dispositions that support school or district improvement
processes.
o Select two individuals who you hope to interview and observe based
on recommendations from your colleagues.
o Extend an invitation to each individual to request an interview and
an opportunity to observe him or her in action. [Be prepared to
explain your goal for this assignment fully. [Note: you will be
collecting the data]

Write Section 1: Introduction (1-2 pages)
• Summarize your review of literature and the guiding principles or
practices leaders exhibit that result in successful school or district
improvement processes.
• Explain the collaborative process and why the two individuals were selected.
• What question do you hope to answer through this investigation?
[This guiding question is open and higher-order; it will be re-visited
in the conclusion.]

Stage 2: Data Collection Plan

Assignment Directions:
o Determine your methods for gathering information from the two (2)
different leaders.
o Focus on two distinct practices to collect data: The first set of
practices relates to the art of leadership (abstract, subjective, or
conceptual practices).
? Schedule a private interview with a leader to discuss beliefs or
dispositions about:
? Building relationships: How does the leader build relationships with
stakeholders that support school or district improvement processes?
How does the leader build trust?
? Sharing vision: How does the leader share his or her vision about
successful school or district improvement processes with the learning
community? How does the leader set benchmarks to guide change?
? Negotiating: How does the leader negotiate during controversial
discussions, especially with sensitive issues? How does the leader
delegate responsibilities?
o The second set of practices relates to the science of leadership
(concrete, objective, or actual practices). Examples of ways to gather
information about leaders’ practices and perceptions:
? Schedule an observation of each leader during an interaction to
identify practices related to:
? Meetings: How does the leader conduct meetings? What practices are
observed that promote or inhibit respect and honor of individual
differences?
? Questioning: How does the leader use questions to build understanding?
? Decision making: How does the leader bring a group to a consensus?
What strategies are practiced?
o Design your instruments to gather and document the information.
o Present your ideas for gathering data to colleagues for feedback.
o Modify your work as appropriate and justified.

Write Section 2: Data Collections (3-5 pages)
• Explain in one to two paragraphs how you accomplished the directions
for Section 2.
• Provide the actual instruments to document your data. You will
include two documents (one for each leader):
• Construct five open-ended questions for the interview, and explain
how you will document the information.
• Describe the observational protocol, criteria, or indicators that
you will be observing or noting as you document practices or actions.
Note exactly what you observe, when, and how long.

Stage 3: Results
Assignment Directions:
• Collect, manage, and organize the data in files, charts, or grids.
• Read all of the documentation; take notes (color-code) when you see
replication, category, or a pattern.
• Describe, classify, compare, and contrast the documented findings.
• Interpret the data and present findings in a systematic matrix or list.

Write Section 3: Results (2-3 pages)
• Systematically explain each source of data and then identify
commonalities and contrasts among and between the data sources.
• Describe the strengths, weaknesses, and gaps in your data to
colleagues to elicit feedback.
• Synthesize the data to report your findings or results of the study.

Stage 4: Conclusion
Assignment Directions:
• Based on the findings or result from Section 3, select 2-3
conclusions or findings that you can make about effective practices
and dispositions that support school or district improvement
processes.
• The conclusions will provide the premise for guiding your review of
literature to identify research-based strategies or practices to
promote or foster positive change and support school or district
improvement processes.

Write Section 4: Conclusion (1-2 pages)
• Re-visit, state, and address the initial question stated in Section 1.
• Explain how the data provided responds to the guiding question.
• Construct 2 – 3 conclusions supported by the data.
• Explain how these conclusions will guide your review of literature
to identify research-based strategies or practices to promote or
foster positive change and support school or district improvement
processes.

Stage 5: Recommendations or Applications for Future Practices

Assignment Directions:
o Identify key or search terms in your conclusions that will guide
your review of literature.
o Only review literature in peer-reviewed journals within the past 5 years.
o Select a minimum of three sources that address your data-driven
conclusions from Section 4.

Write Section 5: Recommendations or Applications for Future Practices
(2-3 pages)
o Based on the conclusions in Section 4, construct a practice, plan,
or leadership style that you plan to adopt.
o Justify your practice, plan, or leadership style by citing at least
three (3) or more current (within 5 years, peer-reviewed) resources
from the literature that support it.
o Reflect on this Application Assignment as you convince the reader
why your decisions are timely, pertinent, and appropriate.
