A dissertation falls under the category of research papers and therefore the format used when writing many dissertations is very closely related to that of a research paper. It is common practice to have the following main sections in any research based paper; the title, abstract, introduction, literature review, research design, data analysis and discussion, recommendations and conclusions. This however, is an overly simplistic way of looking at a dissertation format. These sections can be further split into various sub-sections depending on the preference of the writer or following the recommendations of the course supervisor.
