You are required to tour a nursing home in your community and record details about the physical setting, the social interactions of the residents, the activities of the staff, and other basic information. There are different checklists provided in class as a guideline for you to use. Feel free to use the checklists provided or modify them to your specifications. Please make sure that you call the facility in advance and speak to someone in admissions so you can set up a tour date. You should be able to schedule a tour within the week. After your tour, I encourage you to ask permission if you can interact with one of the residents. Simply sitting and talking or playing cards with a resident will make their day.

Writing of the Journal Critique
This should be a 4-page paper, written in paragraph form. Add to the 4 pages a title page and a References page. (There should be only one reference, which is the journal article you have just read. Is it recent information? Do you recognize any of the authors he used or the journals where their articles were published? (All of this information can be gleaned from his References section and footnotes, if any.) Is there any evidence that your researcher’s work has been published anywhere else, information about the writer, commentaries on this work by other researchers?

* Do you think the author did a good job in the writing this article and researching the topic? Why or why not?

You be the judge. Use as many of the above subjects (*) as you think apply to your critique. You might want to make both positive and negative comments. Your paper must be at least 4 pages of writing and may be longer.

You have completed several activities and assignments in this module on finding and summarizing resources on leadership and connecting leadership concepts to your own experiences. As you have read and discussed, it is important for leaders to stay abreast of developments in the field of leadership and management and to maintain a critical stance towards new ideas and theories that emerge. This part of your Final Project will be your first opportunity in your programme to practice critical thinking and academic writing on leadership concepts.

Prepare an essay of approximately 1,500 words using the following general outline:

 Introduction
 A description of one or two leadership theories, concepts or models that interest you, including a brief discussion on why you find them interesting or relevant to your work

approaches that might be suitable. The literature review should be formatted as follows:

Part one: Critical appraisal (2500 words) – please refer to the marking rubric on the LMS
The first part of this assignment requires you to conduct a critical appraisal of the research literature
for your selected health care issue. The assignment should include the following:
 Title – you need to provide a clear and succinct title for your assignment
 Introduction – your introduction should clearly identify the aim and focus of your
assignment.
 Statement of the research and summary of the health issue
o Statement of the research question and brief summary of the health issue selected
with reference to the literature and your PICO framework (assignment one);
 Search strategy – based on your PICO framework, you should identify the search strategy
you used to identify the evidence to answer your question – this may have been adapted
following your initial search and refined to help you identify the relevant evidence. Your
search strategy should include the following:
o Statement of key terms used
o Databases and other sources searched to find the evidence
o Exclusion and inclusion criteria
o A PRISMA diagram should be included in an appendix.
 Review and synthesis of the evidence-base – this is the main focus of the assignment
o Your critical appraisal should review and synthesise the findings from at least four
studies selected for comparison. Your review should include a detailed critical
appraisal of the evidence produced from these studies (you may include a table as
an appendix to present your results.
o Your review should include an appraisal of the relative strengths and limitations of
the evidence on this health issue.
 Concluding statement or conclusion – you should write a concluding statement that clearly

Part two: Impact statement (1000 words) – please to the ‘Developing an Impact Statement’
guidance on the LMS (see week 11 tutorial)
Your impact statement should clearly indicate how you would implement findings from your review
of the research literature into health care practice. Your impact statement must include the
following components:
 Setting objectives – what are your main impact objectives? For example, to inform
particular patient groups, to change or influence an aspect of nursing or allied health
practice? To influence policy?
 Audience and dissemination techniques– who is your main audience and how will you
communicate the evidence-base to them? Consider what strategies or techniques you
might use to disseminate research findings into practice – what might be some of the
strengths and limitations of your chosen approach?
 How will you evaluate impact? How will you know if your impact strategies have been
effective? What methods might you use to measure the effectiveness of your impact
statement and the degree to which the evidence is taken up in practice?
References – your assignment should include one final comprehensive reference list for both parts
of the assignment. References should be used to substantiate points made and all references should
be cited according to the APA referencing 6th guidelines.
Marks are allocated to ‘scholarship and written communication’ and ‘referencing and sources’ (refer
to marking rubric). Please ensure your assignment is clearly and accurately written.

Your first research assignment is to write an argumentative research essay. To begin, you will select a topic
based on one of the six Contemporary Arguments chapters in Good Reasons: Sustainability; Education;
Globalization; Science and Ethics; Privacy; and Regulating Substances, Regulating Bodies. Each of these
chapters contains many subtopics, offering a rich array of topics.
Keeping in mind the characteristics of effective argument presented in class and in Good Reasons, you will first
develop a research question and, later, a focused and debatable claim about the subject that you choose. Your
goal will be to demonstrate the soundness of your viewpoint to skeptical readers, and to do this you will need to
offer a well-reasoned, well-supported, and effectively organized argument. You will also need to address and
refute counterarguments.
While there is not a particular organizational scheme that you must follow, you are encouraged to use one of the
structures presented in class or one of the structures presented in Good Reasons. Regardless of the structure you
use, your essay must be carefully organized and clearly presented with an introduction, body paragraphs, and a
conclusion.
