Relocation

Carefully read the attached case study and write a professional business report of 3,000 words (+/- 10%) as a consultant, advising the company on their options for relocation and the development of an operational level integrated risk assessment.

The report should demonstrate your understanding of the topics addressed and include appropriate referencing to support the key methods used. An example report template is provided to help you. You may use this directly, or devise another of your own choosing.

Some years ago, David J. Robinson, a Director of a Textile Company in the Leeds area, decided to go into business on his own account in order to produce and sell his own invention – an electronic measuring instrument, which could determine the percentage of moisture present during the drying process in the manufacture of cloth. He rented an area of 100 sq. metres on the top floor of a cloth dyeing company in a poor district of Leeds, employed three men to assemble the instrument, and also a foreman, a storekeeper/clerk and a salesman, and sank all his effort into the venture. D. J. Robinson’s was born.

The success of the venture depended mainly on the ability and determination of the founder “to sell himself and the instrument”. This Robinson achieved by tremendous personal effort. Working fourteen hours a day, he personally purchased all materials, supervised the assembly of the instrument, fixed selling prices and contacted customers.

After two years the number of employees had risen to over forty, and Robinson had registered his firm as a private limited company, with himself and two former colleagues from the textile industry as Directors. The latter two gentlemen merely provided capital, however, and took no part in the running of the business, which was still very much under David Robinson’s personal control.

Today D. J. Robinson & Company Ltd., employs over fifty people (for details of the present organisation structure and labour force, see Appendix 1) and the Company, which had been formed with the initial intention of closing a significant gap in the instrumentation field associated with the textile industry, has now extended its activities into the general instrumentation market as further electronic instruments (designed to measure and control such factors as temperature, pressure and level in a variety of industrial processes) have been added to the range.

Owing to this rapid expansion, however, the existing premises are now severely overcrowded and David Robinson has recognised that if the Company is to continue to expand, it must move to larger premises. Accordingly he has recently been looking round for a new site which he hopes will satisfy his requirement that it must be in a pleasant environment, preferably nearer the “green belt” than the present premises in a poor district of central Leeds.

After much consideration David Robinson has finally decided to take up a lease offered by Leeds Corporation on premises situated on a Trading Estate at Ridington, on the northern outskirts of the city about ten miles from the present premises. Whilst not satisfying all the requirements which he had in mind, the site on the Trading Estate has numerous advantages. The new premises occupy a total area of 700 square metres, and furthermore, the Ridington residential area which is not far from Leeds’ surrounding countryside, houses 90,000 people and is one of the largest municipal areas in Europe

Robinson is not so happy, however, about the establishment at Ridington as his proposed new Research Department (which he considers is now necessary in order to devise new products, and improve and develop existing ones, in the highly competitive instrumentation field). Having a research background himself he feels that the Research team should be “away from it all” in a country area and is therefore personally keen to consider a premises at Staveley, on the outskirts of Kendal, within the Lake District National Park for the establishment of the Research Department.

You have been engaged as a consultant to assist the company in a feasibility study to identify the pros and cons of each of the proposals and to make recommendations on future strategic direction for the company. You are also required to develop and apply an operational level integrated risk assessment methodology to the manufacturing process to support the company’s aspiration to work toward certification using PAS99, ISO9001,ISO14001 and ISO18001 as their management system model. This should be presented in a formal report of aim 3,000 words

learner Data Discussion Paper

Make sure to follow the criteria exactly
Length: 3000 words ± 10% (excluding transcription) **Please adhere strictly to this word limit** (learner Data Discussion Paper)
. Please read the additional “Ethics Guidelines” at the end of the assignment description. An information and consent form will be provided by your unit convenor. Please give one copy to participants and keep a copy for your records.
This assignment involves collecting a small sample of empirical data, and writing a report based on the analysis of this data. The aim of this exercise is for you to get a feel for what is involved in collecting and analysing second language data. Since not all candidates will have previously completed a research methods course.
Choose one of the following alternatives in order to collect some data from someone who has learnt a second or foreign language either formally or informally. Remember that you will need to transcribe the discourse you elicit and so you should record it on audio tape or digital media. Before collecting the data, check that the equipment and the way that it is set up will provide you with a recording of sufficient quality to enable you to transcribe the data.
Before embarking on the project you should consider the question you are interested in. What you are interested in investigating will determine the topic you choose to undertake. For example, you might want to explore issues of motivation(specific topic not in general ) or learning strategies as they relate to a particular learner, in which case you would design and carry out a structured interview. Alternatively, you may wish to examine aspects of your chosen learner’s interlanguage, in which case you would design a performance task to focus on the points of language that you wanted to investigate.
As you plan and carry out your data collection and analysis, it may help to keep the following points in mind:
• The study should have an aim, but this aim can focus on the individual learner, and can involve simply gaining a clear understanding of one aspect of SLA as it applies in this particular learner’s case.
• The study and findings should be situated within the context of the research literature (i.e. it is very important to relate your findings to a number of articles that you have read). The assignment should demonstrate that you are able to talk about these issues as someone who has read and thought about the relevant area of SLA). Students completing this assignment in previous semesters have commented that it is much easier to do this when the interview or performance task is designed with the relevant body of research literature in mind.
• The conclusions drawn should be appropriate to the amount and type of data collected and analysed. This means expressing ideas with an appropriate degree of tentativeness, and taking care not to overgeneralise from a very limited data sample.
The data that you analyse should come from one of the following sources:
Option 1: A structured interview. This is the option that you would choose if you wanted to investigate an individual’s experiences, perspectives or beliefs on one aspect of their second/foreign language learning. Before doing the interview, think about the research question(s) you are asking and the information that you need to obtain to answer this question. You can use the research literature to help you to frame your questions. Your interview should last at least fifteen minutes.
OR
Option 2: A performance task. If your main aim is to elicit a sample of language for the purposes of analysing particular features of the learners’ production, this is the option that you would choose. Depending on the features that you wish to investigate, you will need to think carefully about designing your tasks so that they elicit the feature in question. For example, if you want to investigate learners’ use of the past tense, you would need to make sure that the learner was given adequate opportunities to talk about past events. It is often a good idea to ask the participant to complete two or three different types of activity. For example, you could elicit a narrative account of some kind by asking them to tell you a personal experience of some kind (e.g. a recent holiday they have had, about a festival, the story of a film they have seen recently, or the story of a book they have read recently etc.). Then ask them to describe in detail a picture or photograph which you provide. You might also ask them to relate a brief story from a series of pictures.

Assignment 3 – Options 1 and 2
Transcribe approximately 10-15 minutes of the data. The level of detail in your transcription will depend on what you will be analysing. Ensure that you transcribe all the non-target-like elements accurately (i.e. don’t be tempted to ‘fix’ grammatical or other features when you do the transcription).
There are quite a number of different transcription systems. You can use the simplified Jefferson transcription system shown below, or, if there is another system with which you are more familiar, you can use that. Just make a note of the meaning of any symbols you use
The assignment should be presented using the following headings:
Introduction
This should introduce the reader to the research and should include a brief literature review in which previous findings relevant to the topic are outlined and synthesised. The background, rationale and objectives of the study should be described.
Method

This should provide details of your methodology under these sub-headings:
Participant. Here you should describe the relevant characteristics of the individual or group concerned (age, gender etc.)
Procedures. Here you should outline the instruments and methods that you used to collect your data.
Data analysis. Here you should describe the procedures and techniques that you used to analyse your data, i.e. after you collected the data, what steps did you go through?
Results and discussion
This should outline the results of the analysis of your data. Depending on the type of study that you undertake, you may need to quantify these in some way in order to be able to make sense of them. Percentages and/or raw scores are adequate; there is no need to use inferential statistics.
Most students undertaking this assignment opt for a qualitative design, where the data does not lend itself to quantification. In these cases, it is still important to provide the reader with evidence that your interpretation can be supported by the data.
Following the results there should be a discussion of your findings and your interpretation of their significance. These should be discussed in the context of previous findings in the literature where appropriate. Mention any problems or limitations in your data collection or analysis which might affect your interpretation of the data (e.g. any difficulties in making decisions about how to classify particular instances of language use, or how to assign meaning to an utterance).
Conclusion
This should briefly summarise your findings, identify any unanswered questions and indicate any avenues for future research that arise from your study.
References
Include here bibliographic details of all references cited in the body of the essay. Please use a standard author-date referencing system (e.g. APA).

• CONCEPTUAL ANALYSIS & LITERATURE REVIEW
• METHODOLOGY
• RESULTS, ANALYSIS AND DISCUSSION
• CONCLUSIONS, IMPLICATIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS
• REFERENCE LIST

sociolinguistic study of feedback in a language learning website

First of all, my dissertation is about a website called Lang-8. This is a website for language learning and English language is one of them. the website has three main sections: 1- journal (members write anything and native speakers correct for them), discussion groups (many groups formed by members and they each have posts), and a section called HINative (where a member can ask a question about the language or the culture and a native speaker can answer him). what i am focusing on is the two first sections. I will look at the type of feedback and correction given to journal writings. I will also chose one of the group discussions and that group is named (English classroom) and will do a content analysis for the posts and replies.
here are the concerns:
1- I can’t seem to find a connection between my research questions:one is asking about the feedback to writing entries and the other is about discussion posts (a friend said that both are considered a study of feedback since replies to posts in the discussion board are feedback too) but still two kinds and I want the connection to be clear in my paper, I feel I am talking about two separate things. I can’t think of like one big umbrella question?
2-the section of the HiNative ..should it replace the discussion board as a source of data? and why?
3-I wrote about the theory of community of practice in my Lit Review but my advisor said that I need to include a framework through which you are studying feedback in the writing entries ? and also the discussion board ( and when you include the frameworks or theories please, consider the way I am going to approach the questions..I mean in the first question for example I am asking about types and focus of feedback,I need the framework to go along with this and so on..
4- Do I need to include other theories or frameworks other than community of practice
5-what is the relationship of sociolinguistics to my study?
6- there are a lot of headings in the three chapters that I did not write anything about ..one of them is a background about the study at the beginning of CH.1 (this can be a story or an incident altho motivates me to do this research..I actually can’t think of one..I will give you my info since that will help in this part: i am an ESL graduate student in the US, I studied English since I was 12, I also taught English for less than a year in a public school)
7- I included another paper as a sample. My advisor asked me to follow it especially in Methodology part..she liked it a lot.
8-the things that I wrote in Ch.3 like the coding process, procedure and everything can be replaced, changed, deleted, added to as you see appropriate. the methods and procedures I put are not final and I am not totally satisfied with them so if there is a chance to make them better or add more clarifications to them. I want the methodology part to be really clear as I am using it as a guide on how to go on with the analysis. I want clear description of what I do and how to go through analyzing data, are there quantitative part, how to approach it,tools to use..and the same for the qualitative
9-since I don’t know how many pages should this take, I will put 20 for now and if any change is needed,we can update. the resources also there is no certain number but what you need
10- if there are interesting questions that I may consider including in the research questions given the features of the website, please suggest them
11-you need to visit the website Lang-8 (http://lang-8.com). you can use the email (chopure@hotmail.com) and the password 123qweQW to log in.
12-finally if the quality of your production requires longer than I chose, then it is ok for me for the sake of a better quality.

P.S. As for the second question, may I know earlier about it because right now ,I am collecting data and I want to decide between the HiNative source or the Discussion board.
