Concept of Health

Paper guidelines:
Objectives:
• Students will discuss the concept of “health” from a variety of theoretical perspectives
including biomedicine, critical medical anthropology (CMA), and lay/popular beliefs about
health.
• Students will conduct an analysis of a current health issue using CMA
• Students will consult primary sources, critically assess findings and compare results.
• Students will develop competence in scholarly writing including the following: development
of a well-structured argumentative paper that contains a thesis statement; use of
introductory and concluding paragraphs; use of appropriate grammar; constructing wellstructured
sentences and paragraphs; and citation and references for primary source
material.
Background:
In The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks, journalist Rebecca Skloot (2011) tells the story of
how the descendants of Henrietta Lacks come to terms with the story of her death from
cancer and the use of her cells for biomedical research. Essential to that story is the conflict
between the powerful biomedical system and the beliefs held by Henrietta’s family about
cancer and the body. Critical Medical Anthropology (CMA) uses a theoretical framework that
is expressly political to analyze conflicts between biomedical practitioners and others (Baer et
al 2003).

Skloot R. 2011. The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks. New York: Broadway/Random House.
Instructions:
1. Locate three examples from the book where the beliefs of a family member come into
conflict with those of a biomedical practitioner (doctor, nurse, researcher or other). For
each example:
• Describe the belief system of the family member and speculate on how this belief
system may have been formed
• Describe the belief system of the biomedical practitioner and speculate on how this
belief system may have been formed
• Describe how these belief systems come into conflict
• Describe the outcome of that conflict for both individuals

2. Use a Critical Medical Anthropology (CMA) approach (such as that proposed by Baer et al
2003) to analyze the social relations described in the book. Consult CMA theorists and
researchers to support your arguments and use examples from Skloot (2011) to illustrate
your responses to the following questions:
• Who has power over the agencies of biomedicine?
• How and in what form is this power expressed?
• How is power evident in the social relations described in the book?
• What are the consequences for Henrietta’s family of the power relations that
characterize biomedicine?
3. Describe an incident in the book where a biomedical practitioner acts differently,
overcoming the power relations typical of biomedicine in an effort to meet the family’s
needs.
• Describe the incident
• In your opinion, does this action make any difference for the family?
• Why or why not?
4. Provide a point-form outline indicating the responses and examples you will use to answer
questions 1 and 2 above. Provide 3 preliminary references from CMA theorists or
researchers that will support your arguments. The format for the outline is 1-2 pages
including references. The Term Paper Outline is due in class Oct 28.
5. The format for the Term Paper is 8-10 pages (including title page and references) doublespaced,
12-pt font with minimum 2 cm margins. Provide a title page listing the name of the
assignment, your name, your student number, the course number, the instructor’s name
and the date. Use page numbers. In the body of the paper, use as many paragraphs as
necessary, but be sure to include introductory and concluding paragraphs. You may write
in the first person voice. You are required to consult a minimum of three (3) published
primary sources for your interpretations. Provide citations in text for these sources.
Provide a reference list. A Citation and Referencing Style Guide is provided on the next
page. The Term Paper is due in class Nov 11.

Library Support for this Term Paper:
The majority of materials for this paper can be located using a health-related search engine
such as PubMed: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed. Enter search terms such as “Critical
Medical Anthropology” and examine the results for relevant papers.
An alternative approach, oddly called “hand searching”, is to select a journal and then use that
journal’s search engine or tables of contents to locate relevant articles.
For help
determining if a journal provides peer-reviewed scholarly articles we often use
Ulrichweb: http://ulrichsweb.serialssolutions.com.myaccess.library.utoronto.ca.
For general questions about how to conduct research for this project, or for additional support
with citation and referencing, use the library’s research online or face-to-face consultation
options. You can chat with a librarian during office hours using the UTM library’s ASK
function: http://library.utm.utoronto.ca. You can also make a face-to-face appointment for help
using the library’s online booking function: http://library.utm.utoronto.ca/book-researchappointment.
In most cases the consultations will be referred to a science liaison librarian.
The staff at the Reference & Research desk (on the main floor of the library) will also be able
to provide support.
If you are unsure of whether the articles you have located are appropriate, you may ask the
course Instructor. Contact tracey.galloway@utoronto.ca or pay her a visit during office hours.

ANTH 432H5F Citation and Referencing Style Guide
The citation and referencing style guide provided here is one adapted from a number of
anthropology journals. It is simple yet still provides all necessary information. You must both
cite and reference scholarly publications that support your writing.
1. Citation
• The process of supplying sources in the text or body of your work is called citation. Different
formats exist for citation, including footnotes, endnotes and citation in text. For this course,
you are required to cite in text, supplying the source of ideas or quotes directly after the
material. That means the citation occurs within the same sentence. Citations must include
the author’s name, the date, and, if quoted from published text, the page number from which
the information is taken. In this way, you give the author credit for original ideas. I would
rather you cite too often than too little.
• Quoted sources are extremely rare in academic writing; unless the passage is a classic
piece of scholarly analysis, authors tend to paraphrase and provide a citation.
Example: Galloway (2006) measured the stature of 504 schoolchildren attending six schools
in Grey and Bruce Counties, Ontario. The results indicated that, “like their urban
counterparts, rural Ontario schoolchildren have elevated risk of overweight and obesity”
(Galloway 2006:12).
• If the source has two authors, both names are cited in text.
Example: Research on North American children’s growth has demonstrated that children
living in low-income urban areas suffer greater risk of childhood obesity (Moffat and Galloway
2006).
• If the source has three or more authors, list the first, followed by “et al”. By convention, the
“et al” signifies: “and colleagues” which is how you state it when presenting orally.
Example: Obesity risk was highest in children living in Low-SES B (Moffat et al 2005). These
children may be caught in a “double-jeopardy following a pathway of early childhood undernutrition
with subsequent over-nutrition in late childhood, adolescence and adulthood” (Moffat
et al 2005:363).
2. Referencing
• Because citation in text only supplies limited information (author, date, and sometimes page
numbers), it is necessary to provide complete details (references) about the source of the
cited work. List only those articles that have been cited in the body (text) of the paper.

• All sources for this course will come from peer-reviewed scholarly journals. If you are unsure
whether a journal uses peer review, read the information on the journal’s homepage. Journal
titles may be abbreviated using the abbreviations or acronyms used by PubMed.
• The referencing format is provided below. Articles are listed alphabetically according to the
surname of the first author. The list is not numbered. If there are two or more references
with the exact same author(s), they are assigned letters “a”, “b” etc. and cited that way in
text.

Literature Review

Overview: A literature review is an evaluative account of what has been published on a topic by accredited scholars and researchers. The purpose of a literature review is not to create an original argument and support your position with scholarly research (this is the typical college research paper assignment), but instead to summarize and synthesize the available research in the field to assess the value of the research already done by others, identify prevalent trends and discover what research remains to be done in a particular subject area. Literature reviews direct the formation of new research questions and are routinely included in the opening sections of scholarly research reports. A successful literature review must be defined by a guiding concept such as your research objective, the problem or issue you wish to discuss. A literature review is not just a descriptive list of the material available, or a set of summaries (this is an annotated bibliography).
In addition to leaving you a better informed researcher in a particular specialized subject area, writing a literature review helps you develop and demonstrate two valuable skills:
Research: the ability to scan the literature efficiently to identify a set of useful articles and/or books and to obtain those materials.
Critical Evaluation: the ability to apply principles of analysis to identify unbiased and valid studies.
Instructions: In consultation with your instructors and the list of issues provided, select a topic area as the focus of your literature review. General topic selection is due October 1st . A 5% penalty on the assignment will be assessed for failure to do so.
Once you have a subject area, begin the literature review process by familiarizing yourself with the available research on this topic. Don’t try to read everything, but do consider both articles that are recent and research that forms the foundations of this knowledge base.
Narrow your topic area appropriately to make the task of writing your literature review more manageable. For example, Internet access could be your general topic area. Do you want to focus on providing universal global access to this resource or providing equal access to the Internet to persons with disabilities? Given that both of these topics are also overly broad you’ll want to further narrow the specific topic of your literature review with respect to the available research in the area. You may finally focus on providing Internet access to women in third world countries or facilitating Internet access for persons with limited dexterity. Be wary and wise. Given the proliferation of research on the Internet even these topic areas may be too general to allow you to develop a firm grasp of the research area! Your revised topic area must be registered in writing with the instructors prior to November 6th . A 5% penalty on the assignment will be assessed for failure to do so.
Once you have narrowed your topic sufficiently, you’ll want to locate a range of materials published by experts or scholars in this particular area of study. Examining bibliographies to locate reoccurring names can lead you to the works of key researchers in the field. Scanning for titles of studies that are cited repeatedly can also lead you to influential texts in the area. At this point, you’ll want to gather more materials than you plan to include in your literature review to allow for the winnowing out of substandard or poorly related materials.
When you are reading the materials you’ve collected do so with an eye toward writing your literature review. All good literature reviews perform the following tasks:
Provide a tightly-organized investigation of a single thesis or research question by identifying key research on the topic area.
Synthesize the results of previous research into a summary of (1) what is understood to be historically accurate or accepted practice, (2) what practices or policies are still under question of investigation, (3) what practices or policies have not been well addressed by existing research and (4) what areas of the topic still require investigation.
Identify distinct areas of controversy among previous researchers/research results.
Devise questions that need further research.
(These areas could provide good headings to organize your notes and later your writing.)

Scope: All literature reviews will be expected to encompass at least one major controversy in the specific topic area and to explain this disagreement from at least two competing vantage points. Students will be expected to incorporate reviews of at least 7 closely related sources.
Length: Although there is no length requirement, a fair estimate of length, not including bibliography and appendix, would be approximately 6-8 pages for undergraduates.
Technical requirements: All papers must exceed general writing standards for the appropriate college level. Papers that are poorly written, edited or proofread may be penalized a full letter grade. If you are concerned about your writing proficiency, please make use of the Writing Center resources. Consider exchanging papers with another class member to facilitate editing and proofreading.

Papers should comply with APA (American Psychological Association) citation style throughout. APA resources are readily available on-line or through the Writing Center.
Academic Honesty: As per course policy, all papers must represent the student’s individual and original work. Instances of plagiarism, including failure to provide source citations for direct quotations from other authors or paraphrasing their ideas without source attribution, will result in a failing grade for the assignment and likely in the course.

Global Communications

Assignment Instructions

This week we are focusing on global communication. I have listed several journal articles to give you some background on this topic. I would like you to write a 3-5 page paper with global communication as your topic. I am going to leave the details of this paper up to you…it just needs to involve global communications in some way. You could choose to cover the topic in a broad way, or you could choose to focus on a particular company and explain their methods of communicating globally. As long as your paper is well written and researched, you can decide! Please attach your Word document to this assignment.

Important Personal Experiences

Essay Topic:
Please reflect on what you consider to be an important personal experience related to your talents, interests, or commitments. Using this experience, please tell us what you learned about yourself. How will this experience prepare you for success at Rutgers?

For this, a personal experience I would like to include is volunteering at Rartian Bay Medical Center last year. Can you please include details such as how this experience relates to my interest in medicine (wanting to be a doctor as my future occupation), and that I learned various realms within the medical field–specifically dealing with individuals of all kinds, learning valuable social skills, being organized, prompt, multifarious, keeping up with the quick pace of the doctors and nurses, etc.

Based on the criteria on the college’s website, the essay has to be at max 3,800 characters.

The World I come From

Essay Topic:
Describe the world you come from — for example, your family, community or school — and tell us how your world has shaped your dreams and aspirations.

For this, can you please include the following if possible:
-family wise: I have a diverse background: my father is originally from India and my mother is originally from Guyana
-I have learned various life lessons from these varying backgrounds: the importance of education, familial relationships, etc.
-I come from a recently divorced family, in which has been a struggle. My father does not spend much time with me when supposed to-once or twice a year. My father also took my puppy away from me–whom I have grown an attachment to when growing up–and have not seen my pet for over two years. My mother has always stood by my side throughout, and has pushed me to excel rather than drop into depression.-These circumstances only pushed me in the forward direction in education, as I believe that attending a great college would only help my mother and I in the long run–to combat the problems we face.
The max word limit is actually 500 words for this essay.
