In this worksheet, you will apply what you have learned about solution-focused therapy to analyze a therapy session in which Insoo Kim Berg is working with a client diagnosed with terminal AIDS. After reading the learning materials listed for this week and watching Dying Well, address each of the following. In each case, describe the theoretical concept, cite your source, and provide an example from the film.
Therapeutic Relationship: Consider what you have read about the client/therapist relationship in solution-based therapies. Please include two to three specific examples from this case example, and then include two to three descriptions of how the technique you observed fits with the model. A bulleted list is fine, but be sure to include full sentences and proper punctuation.
Assessing Client Strengths: Identify two to three examples of where Berg identified a client strength. You will also include two to three bullet points about how “assessing client strengths” fits with this particular model.
Solution-focused Interventions: Identify three to four solution-focused interventions that you heard Berg use. Present these examples and connect them to the intervention (i.e., type of question) that you have learned about in your readings.
Goal Setting: Reflect on your readings and develop a goal that would be used for this client while conducting solution-focused therapy. Remember, these goals should be positive, concrete, and measurable. Include the goal, along with a description of how this goal is solution-focused.
Solution-Generating Questions: Include two examples of possible solution-generating questions that you might ask this client. Include rationale for why you chose this question and how it fits with this model.
Integration of the Recovery Model: Include two to three concepts from the literature that demonstrates how the recovery model could be supplemented, along with solution-focused therapy to facilitate change.
Treatment Planning: Study the section on treatment planning in your Gehart text. You have already identified potential goals, strengths and resources, client/therapist relationship, and interventions above. Use this section to develop an abbreviated treatment plan. Include examples of initial tasks, working phase tasks, and closing phase tasks.
Your worksheet entry should demonstrate thoughtful consideration of the ideas and concepts presented in the course by providing new thoughts and insights relating directly to this topic. Your response should reflect scholarly writing and current APA standards.
