UNIT SIX INTRODUCTION
In this unit, we will focus on the benefits of series preaching – the friend of the busy pastor. The Bible is replete with examples of
sequential issues that could serve as the biblical foundation for a sermon series. In fact, you may just want to use the text above to serve as
your next 8 part preaching series!
UNIT SIX OUTCOMES
Upon completion of this unit you should be able to:
1. Identify the benefits of preaching in series.
2. Distinguish the limitations of preaching in series.

UNIT SIX ASSIGNMENTS
6.1 TEXT/MEDIA: TEXTBOOK
INTRODUCTION AND ALIGNMENT
The course text goes to some length, in several chapters, to highlight characteristics of series preaching. This assignment aligns with the
course in that it helps the student not only to examine the characteristics of series preaching, but to also apply them as well in one’s own
preaching ministry.
Upon completion of this assignment you should be able to:
• Identify the benefits of preaching in series.
RESOURCES
Textbook: The Art and Craft of Biblical Preaching
BACKGROUND INFORMATION
Series preaching has long been favored by both expository and topical preachers. A few primary benefits of series preaching are:
• It gives the preacher time to stay in a book of the Bible, or on a topic, and then be able to adequately deal with the material for some time.
• It gives the audience time to stay in a book, or on a topic, as well. So often, laypeople do not stay long enough in one place in their
reading of the Word to serve them well. Series preaching exposes them to thought that has been allowed to germinate, grow root, and bear fruit.
• Series preaching, once guided by the Holy Spirit to the content, gives the preacher a nearly inexhaustible supply of sermon material. The
Gospel communicator can plan months, or even years in advance.
INSTRUCTIONS
1.Read the textbook, chapters- 118, 119, 120, 165, 184, 193.

6.5 UNIT ASSIGNMENT: SERMON SERIES OUTLINE
INTRODUCTION AND ALIGNMENT
Before we leave the subject of series preaching, we want to give you the experience of planning your own series – hence, this assignment. It
aligns with the course in that this assignment actually prepares you to do your own preparation for a series that you can one day actually
preach.
Upon completion of this assignment you should be able to:
Outline a four week preaching series.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION
Now is the time for you to get alone by yourself, roll up your sleeves, do some real praying and thinking, and ask the Lord for some guidance in
creating your own preaching series with the text readings for this unit also in mind. You are not asked to write an entire series of completed
sermons, but rather an outline that lays out a series of no less than six messages to be preached in serial fashion at some point in the future.
Consider the following:
• Will you start with a topic in culture that needs to be addressed via scripture, or will you start with scripture (perhaps a small book like
Jonah or James)?
• Why have you chosen topical over expository, or expository over topical, and why?
• What, if any, media will you use (YouTube, etc.)?
• What is the goal of this series? What do you want your listeners to take away from this series?
INSTRUCTIONS
1. Decide on the nature of your 4 week sermon series – either a book of the Bible, a doctrinal series, or a topical series arising from current
events.
2. In a document of no less than 4 pages (1 page minimum per sermon), outline the sermon series, with each outline to include:
a. the title of the message
b. the biblical text
c. a brief introduction
d. 3-5 main points, with a germane illustration for each main point
e. any sub-points you wish to include
f. a brief conclusion
3. In another Word document (after completing your series outline), answer the following questions in no less than 250 words:
a. Did you start with a topic in culture, or did you start with scripture, and why was that your starting point?
b. Did you use any media (YouTube, etc.)? Why or why not?
c. What was the goal of this series?
d. What did you want your listeners to take away from this series?
4. Submit in Word document.
