There are potential research studies everywhere. Anytime you care for patients, you may wonder if you are doing the best thing for them, if you are doing things the best way, or if there are other interventions that would work better for your patients. This assignment will help you identify potential research studies of interest to you.
Think about nursing skills that you have learned. Were you taught how to do the skills the way your instructors were taught, or were you taught how to do them because research has shown that patients have better outcomes when they are done that way? What questions do you have about the procedures or interventions?
Objectives
Students will:
1. Identify potential areas for research.
2. Link nursing practice to research questions.
3. Complete the first step of a literature review.
Assignment Guidelines
For this assignment, you will identify 1 question you have about aspects of your nursing practice. You will write them as research questions and interview other nurses to find out if they would be good research topics.
To prepare your paper:
Identify 1 question you have about nursing practice. Select an area of interest or that need additional study.
Consider the following example:
Another student worried about the effects of soaking the feet of diabetic patients during nail care. It seemed to him that soaking his patients’ feet dried them out even more, putting them at increased risk for infection.
Write research question.
3. To establish face validity approach 2 registered nurses who work in the area of your research inquiry. Ask each of the nurses the following:
Are they aware of any research in this area?
b. Would research on this topic be helpful to practice?
4. Using the feedback you received from the nurses you interviewede, revise your question.
When writing the Research Question Development Paper:
State the original question and briefly describe why you chose this topic.
Describe the nurses you interviewed. Do not give their names, but include their jobs and familiarity with research.
Summarize the feedback they gave you.
4. State the revised research questions. Identify the variables and the target population. You will utilize this question to complete your Literature Review and your Incorporating Evidence-Based Practice Project.

This is a copy of the discussion i posted on my topic of interest. Topic of interest is pain management in sickle cell disease
The area of evidence based practice of my interest is pain management in sickle cell disease patients. Sickle cell disease arises as a result of abnormal red cell mutation. According to evidence-based research, people who inherit two Hb S genes from their parents are more than likely to have sickle cell disease. Deoxygenated Hb S tends to deform the erythrocyte, morphing into an abnormal red cell shape known as sickle cell. Due to the abnormal shape of hemoglobin in sickle cell patients, circulation is often impaired. This blockade of blood flow normally leads to tissue ischemia and other co-morbidities manifesting in Sickle cell patients.
One of the major problems of sickle cell patients is pain which is mostly as a result of blood vessels being occluded. For most patients, the pain is often sporadic and it varies in frequency and severity. The pattern of pain, intensity and severity tends to vary over time for most patients which make management of pain a little complicated. Another major problem is the lack of objective pain index. In addition to the non-stable characteristic of pain, the mode of onsets and sites also varies among patients. For some, development of severe pain can occur within 10 minutes and resolve within a few hours; while in others, it can escalate over days. In addition to the above stated problems, self-medication and non-compliance also factors into why pain management in sickle cell patients is complicated.
Due to the fact that there is no objective pain index that can be used by care providers to assess patient’s pain, providers trust in the patient report as key to the management of sickle cell pain crises. Furthermore, Patient education on sickle cell disease and crises prevention is crucial to the effective management of pain in sickle cell. Patients should be encouraged to be active participant in their care and management of their disease process. In order to effectively manage pain in sickle cell patients, medication compliance and other management therapy should be well monitored by care provider.
