Research and Proposal

“A thought which does not result in an action is nothing much, and an
action which does not proceed from a thought is nothing at all.”
George Bernanos, French Author
In this assignment, you will begin by choosing a current problem that you
are interested in. This problem, ideally, will be a complex one. There will be
more than just a “for” or “against” position to be taken, and the issue won’t
be so charged and loaded that people’s minds are already made up about it.
Your instructors will help you very carefully choose your problem.
Then, you will do research to learn more about the problem and about
various viewpoints and stakeholders. Eventually, you will form a unique
thesis about this issue, and use research to support a series of claims.
Your thesis and claims must be oriented around convincing your audience to
take some real form of action. Your proposal will need to be both persuasive
and practical. Try to provide a modest answer to the problem you identify.
The course textbook, HTWA, has much more detailed information about what
an argumentative essay is, and how to write one.
Your assessment on this paper will be based on the goals of this unit:
1. Explore a relevant and contentious issue from a variety of
perspectives, considering multiple viewpoints and arguments as you
develop your own thesis.
2. Creatively and critically synthesize research from multiple sources—
develop awareness of different personal, academic, and civic contexts
and express your unique ideas in relationship to the ideas of others.
3. Apply yourself to a problem and seek relevant, reasonable, and
attractive solutions.
4. Use academic citation systems for documenting work, and know
where to find resources that will help you with this.
5. Revise your argument so that it is clear, convincing, well-organized
and polished.

Research Database Assignment

n
Topic:
PURPOSE
You are to locate and document research databases that relate to a significant clinical nursing issue of your choice. The research databases may be labeled as such, or may be collections of research studies and reports. You are not looking for research or articles, you are looking for new databases.
COURSE OUTCOMES
This assignment enables the student to meet the following course outcome:
CO 1: Examine the sources of evidence that contribute to professional nursing practice. (PO #7)
DUE DATE: You are to identify a total of five research databases (or collections of research-based evidence) that are relevant to a significant clinical nursing issue that is important to you. Submit the descriptions using the form provided in Doc Sharing to the Week 3 Dropbox by 11:59 p.m. Sunday (MT).
POINTS
The assignment is worth a total of 175 points. Please see the grading rubric for details.
REQUIREMENTS
1. Choose a topic of interest to you that is a significant clinical nursing issue. Please note that the databases you identify could be useful sources of information for your Capstone project in NR451, so choose your topic thoughtfully.
2. Download the NR439_Research_Database_Form from Doc Sharing and type information about each database directly onto the form. Your paper does NOT need to follow APA formatting; however, you are expected to use correct grammar, spelling, syntax, and write in complete sentences.
3. Save the file by clicking Save as and adding your last name, e.g., NR439_Research Database_Smith.docx.
4. Describe your topic of interest. This is worth 15 points.
5. Locate a total of five research databases related to your topic. Each research database description is worth 30 points. You may search for these in various locations, e.g., the Internet or the CCN Library. You may NOT choose the databases that are already familiar to you – MEDLINE, PUBMED (which also indexes MEDLINE), GOOGLE SCHOLAR, and CINAHL. Instead, you are expected to expand your knowledge of evidence-based sources. Places to help you begin include your textbook, which lists databases and websites that report research. The Chamberlain online  gives you access to several databases and provide tutorials for searching. Government sites such as those at the National Institutes of Health offer collections of research on a variety of subjects. The key to choosing the databases is that each contains research-based evidence that also pertains to your topic of interest. Again you are looking for new databases to use in the future and not articles related to your nursing clinical issue.
6. Review each database to gather information to create a description for the assignment. Each description must:
a. identify the title of the research database;
b. describe the location of the research database in a way that a reader could find it. This should be the URL. This URL should take you to the home page of the database.
c. name owner or publisher of the source;
d. describe the research database. This must be in your own words and not copied and pasted from the original source. Include the purpose of the database and the subject matter it covers. This may be two to three sentences; and
e. explain how the research found in the database relates to your topic of interest. This may be an two or three sentences

How media reinforces the invisibility of Asian Americans and perpetuates the Black-White Binary within the Affirmative Action Debate

This research paper will focus on how CNN (www.CNN.com) perpetuates the Black-White binary (Perea, 1997) and reinforces the invisibility of Asian Americans within the affirmative action debate post 2003. Please sort through articles on www.cnn.com to determine how media has largely contributed to the silencing of Asian Americans as it relates to affirmative action policies within higher education. Use the Black-White binary as a framework when parsing through the articles. I need the actual findings from the cnn.com research with citations to specific articles illustrating how media reinforces the affirmative action debate as a Black-White issue. Please reference and elaborate on the relevant Supreme Court cases including Grutter v. Bollinger (2003) and Fisher v. University of Texas (2013). Also highlight the invisibility of Asian Americans in the discussion and the problems of their model minority status by specifically looking at those Supreme Court cases. Use as many citations as necessary. I do not need an introduction – I just need the body of the paper to be about the research findings.

child development research project

While evaluating the material covered in this course, select a novel or current topic that you think could benefit from further research (having to do with child development). It could also be a topic that you would like to research in the future, if you had a chance.

In a paragraph of 5 sentences, describe the topic that you would like to research. Explain your rationale or reasons why this topic could benefit from research. Describe the elements of the topic that could also benefit society or the field of developmental psychology.

Then write a second paragraph of at least 4-5 sentences explaining the process you would use to research this topic. Do you think it would be easy or difficult to study your area of interest or concern? Why or why not?

In order to expand your understanding of the topic, identify a peer reviewed scholarly journal article that is related to the topic and that is not already part of the assigned course material. How does this article support your understanding of the topic you selected? Cite correctly in a Reference section.

Cite any other outside sources that you may have included in your paper using an APA formatted in-text citation and reference format.

research week 2

This is a two part assignment that will be submitted within one document.

Part I
Part I checks your understanding of key concepts from Jackson and Trochim & Donnelly.

Answer the following questions:

Jackson even-numbered Chapter exercises (pp. 220-221; 273-275)
What are degrees of freedom? How are the calculated?
What do inferential statistics allow you to infer?
What is the General Linear Model (GLM)? Why does it matter?
Compare and contrast parametric and nonparametric statistics. Why and in what types of cases would you use one over the other?
Why is it important to pay attention to the assumptions of the statistical test? What are your options if your dependent variable scores are not normally distributed?

Part II
Part II introduces you to a debate in the field of education between those who support Null Hypothesis Significance Testing (NHST) and those who argue that NHST is poorly suited to most of the questions educators are interested in. Jackson (2012) and Trochim and Donnelly (2006) pretty much follow this model. Northcentral follows it. But, as the authors of the readings for Part II argue, using statistical analyses based on this model may yield very misleading results. You may or may not propose a study that uses alternative models of data analysis and presentation of findings (e.g., confidence intervals and effect sizes) or supplements NHST with another model. In any case, by learning about alternatives to NHST, you will better understand it and the culture of the field of education.

Answer the following questions:

What does p = .05 mean? What are some misconceptions about the meaning of p =.05? Why are they wrong? Should all research adhere to the p = .05 standard for significance? Why or why not?
Compare and contrast the concepts of effect size and statistical significance.
What is the difference between a statistically significant result and a clinically or “real world” significant result? Give examples of both.
What is NHST? Describe the assumptions of the model.
Describe and explain three criticisms of NHST.
Describe and explain two alternatives to NHST. What do their proponents consider to be their advantages?
Which type of analysis would best answer the research question you stated in Activity 1? Justify your answer.

Support your paper with a minimum of 5 resources. In addition to these specified resources, other appropriate scholarly resources, including older articles, may be included.

Length: 5-7 pages not including title and reference pages
References: Minimum of 5 scholarly resources.

Your paper should demonstrate thoughtful consideration of the ideas and concepts that are presented in the course and provide new thoughts and insights relating directly to this topic. Your paper should reflect scholarly writing and current APA standards. Review APA Form and Style.

PROPOSAL AND LITERATURE REVIEW

A research proposal is a short, coordinated document which summarises what you are going to research, why the research is of relevance, what is currently known about the topic and how the research will be carried out.

The aim of the proposal is to demonstrate that the research is feasible and that you have thought through how you are going to do it. It shows your understanding of the range of issues involved in doing reliable, valid and ethical research and gives others confidence in your capabilities. These are essential characteristics of graduates.

The following headings provide guidance for the content of the sections of your proposal. The overall word count should be no more than 2200 words with Section 4 being no more than 1500 words. Suggested word limits for the remaining sections are shown.
