public health informatics system / program

public health informatics system / program
Order type: Research Paper

Research Paper
Each student in this course is expected to write a paper with a minimum length of 15 double-spaced pages, focusing either on a public health informatics system / program or population health issue that involves an informatics application. Keep in mind the name of the course: The paper should involve legal, ethical, and informatics dimensions. A description of an IT system or a disease alone is insufficient. Students are encouraged to consult scholarly articles, white papers, government and association reports and other sources.

A. Students who choose a current public health system or program may investigate such questions as:
1. Under what legal authority does this program operate?
2. Does the system work as originally intended? List any successes or failures.
3. Is individual consent required? If so, how is it obtained?
4. What are the privacy and confidentiality considerations of this program? Should either be breached, what is the potential harm?
5. Is the project?s effectiveness limited by its data collection methods? Will this change as more clinical information is available through HIE?

DO ONE OF THE TWO A OR B DO NOT DUE BOTH OR COMBINE PICK ONLY ONE TOPIC

B. Students who would prefer to write on a population health issue should focus on a cutting-edge topic (such as obesity, diabetes or bioterrorism) that will involve informatics applications and not one that is largely settled (such as smallpox) or is beyond the reach of most public health departments (such as climate change). They may investigate questions such as:
1. What makes this issue ?cutting edge?? How does it differ from ?traditional? public health issues?
2. Does sufficient legal authority exist to conduct assessment, policy development, and assurance on this issue? If so, what are the sources? If not, or if authority is unclear, what would type of authorization would be needed?
3. What type of information would public health officials need to gather in order to conduct and effective assessment? Will the information require individual consent?
4. How will potential policy and assurance responses to this issue differ from traditional means used by public health?
5. Think of how the use of stem cells in medicine evokes different responses from scientists, Right-to-Life groups, and patients who could benefit from stem cell therapy. How does your topic present similar differences in ethics and interests?
These questions are not comprehensive ? they are only meant to help students get started on their research.

Carbon foot print/Environment

Topic: Carbonfootprint/Environment

Order type: Research Paper
There are dozens of carbon footprint calculators and tools like them that purport to be able to quantify the environmental impact of households with minimal input from the user. Some even claim to educate or guide users on how best to reduce the negative environmental footprint of their lifestyle. Your will select 3 carbon footprint calculator tools. Each person in the group will have 3 people in their social network complete each of the calculator tools as accurately as possible. Record and compare the results of each calculator for each person. Are the footprint results for an individual consistent across calculators? What might explain any discrepancies? Assess the strengths and weaknesses of each tool in terms of:

• The user interface: how long does it take to complete, how much burden is on the user to provide detailed data?
• The individualization of the calculators and the results: does the data seem to be derived based on national averages—is there a better way? Are results useful and compelling? Does the data used capture all aspects of an individual’s life that have a negative/positive environmental impact?
• Accuracy of the data collected/used by the tool in calculating impact: what data sources are used? Is the tool thorough enough? Too thorough?
Discuss any areas/aspects of the lives of participants that are missing from the tools—do they collect information relevant to your social network? Is it clear what the best course of action is for users who want to reduce their impact? Reflect on previous academic research on the impact of this type of information on the likelihood that people will change their lifestyles. In addition to assessing the results gathered, to address the other questions to encourage to gather information as much information as possible by browsing company websites, calling company numbers or investigating popular news reviews.
