Current Political Issues

must Choose two (2) editorials or “opinions” on the same HOT POLITICAL topic, BUT on OPPOSITE sides of (they disagree) the issue. The article must not be more than 6 months old, and must be of interest to ALL Americans (not just one state or city).

SOURCES of Articles: You may use physical or online newspapers or a news magazines political Editorials (opinions), or very well known political news blogs like the Drudge Report, Heritage Foundation, Media Matters, or Huffington Post, etc.. Check with me before using less well known blogs. After you choose your publication, then search “editorials” or “opinions” to find a political topic of current interest for people in the whole U.S., not just one state.

Remember that these articles are the Political opinions of the editor of the newspaper or a news magazine, or the opinion of guest writers that the magazine’s or newspaper’s editor has allowed to be printed on the Editorial (or Opinion) section of the publication. They will be biased because they are pushing their side of the argument, but that’s to be expected in these types of articles, so it is not something you can criticize.

CAUTION: NOT qualifying for this assignment: “Letters to the Editor or news stories written by news reporters or news reporting services. You can spot these because they will usually have under the title such things as UPI, AP (associated press), Reuters , Knight Rider, etc., even though some give the name of the reporter, don’t be misled.
IF YOU DON’T SEE THE WORDS “editorial” or “opinion” in the URL at the bottom of the pages you print out, or you did not get it from a well-known bloggers personal opinion article, then it’s NOT an opinion article. News reporters are not supposed to insert their personal opinions into the news stories they report on, so there would be no opinion to discuss in your paper.
Another clue: News reporters’ stories will normally not be placed on the Editorial Pages or Opinion Pages of a newspaper or news magazine. If you are in doubt as to whether your choices qualify as editorials (opinion article), send me a link to your intended articles before doing the assignment and I will tell you “yes” or “no”.

THEN YOU MUST do steps 1-4 below for EACH of the 2 articles you chose.

1. Briefly summarize in your own words each author’s position on the same political issue.
NOTE: this instruction says “briefly summarize”. Write no more than 100 words for the summary part of each article. The remaining 200 _or more words you write about each article must be used answering questions 2,3, & 4. Repeating the Questions I have listed above will not be counted in your total word count.)

2. Tell me how the author did or did not logically prove their point by using, or not using, provable facts, or statistics, or quotes. Just stating that something is a fact doesn’t prove it to be true. Be sure and GIVE me two or more EXAMPLES from the article to show me what the writer used as good, provable facts.
3. How do their statements of facts really add up, or not add up, to their conclusion (meaning:
do their arguments logically prove the premise of the article)? AND tell me Why do they or Why do they not add up?
4. Tell me briefly what additional information they might have included that would have
helped better prove what they were trying to convince you of?

Research Essay Guidelines

It has the guideline listed in details and the marking criteria of what to be expected for the paper so please make sure you strictly adhere to the standard as listed in the essay guidelines.

IMPORTANT:
BOTH PRIMARY AND SECONDARY SOURCES MUST BE USED ACCORDING TO PAGE 3 UNDER BIBLIOGRAPHY SECTION.
Aim for a range of sources (books, articles, newspaper reports, government documents, documentaries, memoirs), and for a mix of primary and secondary materials. In your bibliography list primary and secondary source separately. You are expected to have a minimum of 12 sources (primary plus secondary) in your bibliography.

All in all, please be sure to properly cite in footnotes of any primary/secondary sources you use (including the primary source itself) and you must include a bibliography – reference list has to be attached in the final page.

Structure of the Research Essay (include sub-headings)

– Introduction: Argument (come up with your own argument), Topic (formulate your own topic), Outline (what will you be talking about?)
– Body: You must present 3 key points minimally of reasons you think the ‘Final Solution’ emerge through ‘improvisation’ or ‘deliberate planning.’ (one point for each paragraph and remember the topic sentence must be clear)
– Conclusion: Summary (summarise your content), Larger Context and Open Questions
What I meant by larger context and open questions is that you situate the essay topic in a larger context – this can be for instance the larger field of genocide studies (‘what does the case discussed in the essay tell us about genocide more in general?’) and / or historiography (this can be e.g. the study of Germany, Turkey, Cambodia, Rwanda etc more in general – which part within the history of these countries does genocide play?) and / or other cases of genocide.
Regarding open questions: these usually come up while you’re doing your research and concern open ends, things that are interesting, that you would like to know more about, that have not been addressed in the sources and the secondary literature (one example would be: the role of women in genocide both as victims and as perpetrators). These are things that you find surprising, interesting, worth pursuing further.

To make everything easier, I’ve attached the link in the following for your kind information though it has also been outlined in the second page of the guidelines. Please kindly ensure these details are strictly adhered – also to consider of the fact that the referencing part is normally the easiest page to earn some free points.

Historical Essay #1: Confederation and Constitution

Historical Essay #1: Confederation and Constitution (due Week 4)

As depression struck the new nation in the mid-1780s, new questions arose about the nature of American democracy. Many conservatives believed that the answer lay in a stronger national government. Most radicals believed it was up to the states to relieve the financial burden of the people. These sentiments fostered a movement for a new constitution. Political differences soon stimulated the creation of political parties.

Compare and contrast the Articles of Confederation with the new Constitution of 1787. What were the strengths and weaknesses of the Articles vis-à-vis the Constitution? Give specific instances that demonstrate the weakness of the Articles (such as the Western problem).

Then analyze the drafting of the Constitution, using specific details to show how the various states (slave vs. free, east vs. west) compromised in order to effectively draft a constitution. Pay particular attention to Roger Sherman’s plan, the Great Compromise, which broke a stalemate that could have been fatal to the development of the new Constitution.

Finally, compare and contrast the debate over ratification between the Federalists and the Anti-Federalists. Make sure you cite specific examples from the Federalist Papers to support the Federalist position and contrast it with leading proponents of the opposition (such as John Hancock). Analyze how the debate over a bill of rights illustrates the differences between the two parties. Evaluate the relative success of the Bill of Rights in achieving an effective balance between national and states’ interests.
