International Strategy and Organization

M6D1: International Strategy and Organization
Some international companies choose to follow a multinational (multidomestic) strategy—a strategy of adapting products and their marketing strategies in each national market to suit local preferences. A multinational strategy is just what its name implies—a separate strategy for each of the multiple nations in which a company markets its products. To implement a multinational strategy, companies often establish largely independent, self-contained units (or subsidiaries) in each national market. Each subsidiary typically undertakes its own product research and development, production, and marketing. In many ways, each unit functions largely as an independent company. Multinational strategies are often appropriate for companies in industries in which buyer preferences do not converge across national borders, such as certain food products and some print media.

Respond to the following:
• Discuss how international strategies can be applied to save consumers’ money but keep them contented, based on the quality of product they are buying or using. For example, look at the Flying High with Low Fares article and discuss why or why not Ryanair has a good mindset and strategy skills in order to attract customers and keep a good, stable business.

Conflict and Disruption

For this project, you have a choice of several options to gain a better understanding of how dating and family violence is viewed within our community, and how the officials of our community deal with issues of violence.
Part 1: Please select one option from Category A and two options from Category B. Write one-two pages to answer each question.
Category A (Violence in the media):
1. Read a daily newspaper for at least four weeks and cut out or copy all articles that report family violence, suspected or potential family violence including police or court reports. Analyze the articles and reports. Identify the common features about these cases. Include the articles or copies with your report.

2. Read at least five fairy tales and identify themes or messages that condone or challenge violence, abuse, racism, sexism or other oppression. Analyze the messages. Make lists of the fairy tales you recommend for children and those you recommend be avoided.

3. Read two books for children or teenagers and identify themes or messages that condone or challenge violence, abuse, racism, sexism or other oppression. Analyze the messages. Explain why you recommend for or against each book.

4. Watch at least two popular movies. Count the violent acts and the use of sexism, racism, intolerance, or ethnocentrism. Analyze the messages. What is the rating on this movie? At what age would you allow children or teenagers see these movies? Why?

5. Analyze the music lyrics about relationships or violence from at least four songs within a music genre (pop, country, rap, folk, jazz, etc.). Or compare and contrast at least two songs from each of two genres. Include copies of the lyrics.

Category B:
1. Find out what services (if any) are available for victims of dating violence at this university. Is the subject addressed in freshman orientation or student organizations? Why or why not? Are signs warning students about violence or harassment posted in the school or published in the school paper? Why or why not? How may the situation be improved? What needs to be done?

2. Find out what services (if any) are now available for victims of dating violence or sexual (or other categorical) harassment at your high school (or your children’s high school). Are the subjects addressed in any of the classes? Are signs warning students about dating violence or harassment posted in the school or published in the school paper? What is the official policy if they discover a situation of dating violence or harassment? What really happens?
3. Discuss family violence with a counselor, social worker, human service worker, doctor, nurse, judge, lawyer, or school official. What kind of training did he/she get for handling family violence? What are his or her experiences with the various forms of family violence in his or her job? What does he or she think needs to be done to reduce family violence? How may society and human service agencies better respond to these problems?

4. Find out what kinds of treatments are available for offenders in our community. This project may focus on a particular type of offender or treatment (sex offenders, batterers, Parents Anonymous, Anger Management classes, etc.). Interview someone involved with the treatment program(s). How do they approach the problem? What do they recommend for dealing with these problems?

Part 2: How do the observations you made regarding the media that you selected in Category A relate to the community response you discussed in Category B? In what ways could we as a society do a better job of linking our responses to the exposure that individuals experience during their early socialization? What do we do right?
Grading Rubric:
20 Selects and fully answers one question from Category A
20 Selects and fully answers one question from Category B

20 Selects and fully answers second question from Category B

20 Links ideas from Category A and Category B
10 Makes suggestions to improve the ways which society deals with family violence.
10 Uses correct grammar, formatting, and professional writing style and correctly formats citations and Works Cited page

World Civilizations-Explaining Imperialism

Word Civilizations Assignment III

Our third assignment will focus on the article “Explaining Imperialism: The State of the Art as Reflected in Three Theories.” This is not a very difficult article but it is somewhat dense and requires you to maintain focus. Overall it takes many of the most important theorist and theories concerning imperialism (these theories that try to explain why the great powers basically colonized most of the globe) and puts them into a few distinct general schools (groups that have basic elements in common.)
According to the article, other than ‘lateral pressure,’ what are the two schools of thought that have promoted theories in an attempt to explain imperialism or imperial expansion? You need only very briefly explain those and mention their major proponents.
Now, explain what the theory of “lateral pressure” is. How does it function? If we return to sugar once again as a desirable consumer commodity, could we use sugar to partially explain European colonization of the Caribbean as having been driven by aspects of lateral pressure? Is imperialism the only possible outcome of “lateral pressure?” Answer these questions in full detail.
Instructions:
Your essay should be no longer than 4 pages. Use 12 point script and please double space. Please utilize normal pre-set (1 inch) margins.
When citing the material, especially when using direct quotes, please use footnote citations. (In Word go to References and Footnote and then type your source information.) A works cited page is not a substitute for footnotes. If you need guidance or help with this please do not hesitate to come visit with me or the TA’s.
Use Chicago Manual of Style for referencing. You can find brief guides readily available online.
This particular assignment should focus solely on the assigned essay.
Be sure to edit your work for spelling and grammar mistakes as well as organization and clarity.
Be sure your thesis statement encapsulates your argument for the entire paper (see footnote below)

This particular question is the only one that requires you to formulate an argument. The rest is descriptive. Basically I am using sugar as a case study to see how well you have grasped the “lateral pressure argument.” What this means is that your introduction will be generally descriptive but you need to integrate a thesis statement (argument) into it on the topic of sugar and lateral pressure

What are the sources of China’s comparative Advantage? How does this compare with that of the UK

A 1,500 word essay on a current issue within international trade and commercial policy, analysed using the Classical and Heckscher-Ohlin Models of Commodity trade so as to arrive at contrasting policy prescriptions. This essay is written under test conditions.
First, I would try to understand the question and identify key points/words, e.g.
Sources: what has China got that makes them competitive in production and international trade? To keep your answer in context, you will need to use the various theoretical convepts of comparative advantage.
What is comparative advantage? How is it different from absolute advantage? You will therefore need to start from the Classical theory of trade up to Linder (our next lecture) to trace the various theoretical explanations for the gains to trade.
As China might represent the developing world, so will the UK (the comparator) represent the industrialised countries.
Most of the background informstion you will need here is available/accessable from your lecture notes and recommended texts.
Second, You will need to know some background information about China and the UK with respect to their economic, as well as political structures. These are very important for understanding their trade patterns. For e.g.
China is a transitional economy moving from a command system to a more free market system. Production, consumption, trade and investment have all been liberalized to a greater or lesser extent.
The UK, on the other hand, have always boasted of a free market economy, from which many of our theories are claiming would lead to the highest gains from trade. It is thought to lead to efficiency in production, consumption and trade.
Most of the information you need here could be got from the WTO website. For e.g., China’s trade profile, from which you can assess their endowments, population, skills level/human capital/technology, demand, exports/imports and so on. Has the pattern of their trade changed over the transitional years?
Third, Here is where you start combining the information in the first and second parts above.
See this video that will help tou to appreciate how far China has come in liberalising their international trade
Follow the theories in the order in which they were tought in class and look at China vs UK. You can also draw on information relating to othe developing and industrialised countries
Classical theory of trade – labour productivity (comparative advantage)
Neoclassical (HO) theory – factor endowment (K/L)
Human Skills theory – skilled vs unskilled labour
Technology (PLC) theories – other theories that explain Leontief paradox
Linder’s similarity of preferences (demand reversal)
Other theories could also be included if required
Conclusions: based on arguments from above.

American Politics:Constitutional Convention Paper Assignment
Overview
One of the themes we’ve discussed this semester is how the U.S. government works and what its shortcomings are. It should be obvious by now that there are lots of inefficiencies in our political process and many areas that could be improved. The question we will address in our Constitutional Convention activity is: what exact reforms should be made? How would we, as a class, amend the Constitution if we had a chance?
On Dec. 2nd and 4th we will hold a mini Constitutional Convention. We’ll imagine that 2/3 of the states have petitioned Congress to call for a national convention to amend the Constitution, and that we are the members of that convention. We will discuss possible amendments, debate the pros and cons of them, and vote on whether to formally propose them (at which point they must be ratified by 3/4 of state legislatures before they are added to the Constitution). The full set of rules for the convention is available on Moodle.

Paper Requirements
To prepare for the convention, you will submit a paper in which you will identify two amendments you think will improve the U.S. government. One of these amendments must be institutional in nature (i.e. propose a change how federalism works or the way the three branches of government and the bureaucracy exercise their powers), and the other must be political in nature (i.e. it may address any other aspect of the political system, such as elections, campaigns, political parties, interest groups, the media, civil rights and liberties, etc.). I encourage you to get creative with your amendments. There is a document on Moodle with some amendments that have been proposed in the past, but those are certainly not the only, or maybe even not the best, ways to change the government. I intend for that document to jump-start your thinking process, not substitute for it. One of your amendments may be chosen for debate during our convention.
For each of the two amendments, your paper should do the following:

1. Explain why you think the current way we do things is a problem.
2. Use the website Constitute, which tracks constitutions across the world, to see how other countries handle this. It is organized by topic, so you should easily be able to identify related provisions in other countries’ constitutions. Describe relevant constitutional provisions from at least two other countries and discuss their advantages and disadvantages.
3. Write out the full text of your amendment exactly how it should appear if it were to be added to the Constitution. Your amendment may add language to the Constitution, change a current provision in the Constitution, or clarify a part of the existing Constitution. Be concise in your amendment.
4. Explain your rationale behind your amendment. How will it improve our political process? Why do you think this is the best way to reform the U.S. government?
This paper will be worth 10% of your overall course grade. To receive full credit, your paper must satisfy the following requirements:

• Be approximately 6 pages long, double-spaced, and written in 11- or 12-point font, with 1-inch margins.
• Be written in essay form with full sentences and paragraphs, not bullet points (you may use headings to make your paper readable).
• Fully discuss all four of the points outlined above for both of your proposed amendments.
• Be well-written, using correct grammar, spelling, word choice, writing style, and sentence and paragraph structure. I encourage you to visit the Writing Center for help with your paper, particularly if you have struggled with writing in the past or with other courses.
Cite all sources you have used in writing your paper. This includes the Constitute website and any other sources you consult. My preference is for you to include an in-text citation (such as a parenthetical citation or a footnote) when you use a source, and then include a Works Cited page at the end with a full citation to the source. You may use any citation format you wish, as long as it is complete, consistent, and correct. Once more, the Writing Center can help you with properly citing your sources

Innovation and Global and Cross-Cultural Impact

Part 1 of the assignment requires you to compare and contrast the readings on the concepts of innovation presented in Units 2, 3, 4 and 5 coupled with networks and alliances. Similar to the Unit 1 assignment, indicate the strengths and pitfalls of these concepts, providing two examples of each.

Part 2 of the assignment requests you to formulate an innovation strategy which incorporates the concept of:

Open networks and collaboration.
Alliances, into a technology-driven industry of your choice.
Global and cross cultural impact.

Please provide case study examples of organizations where these concepts have been or could be applied. For this paper you can use a single or multiple case study examples.

In South Africa, as elsewhere, people lives in which intimacy, work, community and spirituality are entwined. In the case of South Africa, they are entwined against a background of a society seeking a new sense of direction and purpose. Using materials from the book(Zoe Wicomb “You can’t get lost in Cape town”) we read and the film(“Tsotsi”) we saw, show how this background dialogues with individual choices in building a life. How would your own choices about work, family, spirituality, and community change if America were similarly seeking to rededicate itself to a new vision of the future? Using the example from your Palestine paper, what would you do if the overarching issue in your life suddenly got resolved and you had to move on? (PS: Please DON’T use any other sources besides the book and film I’ve mentioned above and MUST use the example from my Palestine paper, I will upload my Palestine paper later in my account. Please also be sure to watch the film and read the book before writing the paper
