the profile

Subject: English
Write about an intriguing place, person, activity, or business in your community. your essay may profile an individual based one or two interviews or profile a place, activity , or business that you have observed once or twice. observe your subject closely and then present what you have learned in a way that both informs and engages readers. your profile must be based on first-hand experience and observation right now-not on your memory of some activity, person, or place. do not profile a family member, close friend, our home or your jplace of employment. readers expect profiles to present a subject in an etertaining way that conveys an overall impression.to convey an overall impression of your subject, select carefully details of the place, people, and/or activity and put these details together in a meaningful way. remember you are not writing a biography, a restaurant review, a chronicle, or a report. you are profilling your subject from a particular angle. for example, "Soup, the writer only focuses on Mr. ueganehs passion for creating the best soup for his restaurant. thus the details in the profile only concern his relationship with his employees, customers, and, of course, with his soup.
Rhetorical strategies: for this essay assiggnment, concentrate on rroviding a focusing title, meaningful direct speech, and a memorable conclusion that renforces the overall impression you wish to convey about your subject. don’t forget to use at least one simile and metaphor. use strong verbs and avoid the use of empty phrases
grammar and proofreading: proofread carefully to eliminate all sentence fragmes and run-on sentences.
suggested topics
place or event: you could select an interesting street, builing, or other structure in your neighborhood. send time observing it: do some research on its history and write a profile that explores how it came to be tjhe way it is today. you could profile an event like the annual napoleondn dynamitye festival featured in holson’s "Rural idaho seeks to turn film’s cult satus into prosperity."you could also profile and activity like a jazz dance class or a dog obedience class. remember you must use direct speech in your profile(no barking!).
people: identify someone with an interesting or offbeat job or hobby that has played a significat role in her or his life. interview that person and write a profile that demonstrates how that habby or job has changed hom or her. use direct speech from the interview to help establish the character of your subject.
you could also interview someone you know who is an artist, professional or amateur(e.g. a musician.a painter, or an actor) and write a profile of that person and the specific art she or he practices.
remember the key features of profile writing: an interesting subject: necessary background or context: an interesting angle: a firsthand account, and engaging details.

1. Experiential meanings:
a) What process types are present in the text? Is one type dominant, or maybe more than one? Is this pattern an expected one for the context, or unexpected? What other Process types are there and where do they occur. What does this pattern of Process type choices tell you about the text’s context and the writer’s purpose within that context? The ranked clauses are the essential ones to look at, but it is also worth looking inside the embedded clauses to see what kinds of messages have been embedded. There is extensive embedding in Text 2; we will leave it for you to do your own experiential analysis of the process types and participant roles in the embedded clauses.
b) What are the Participant roles and who/what carries out these roles? Does the pattern of who/what carries out the roles remain constant or does the pattern change? In either case, what are the implications in terms of the writer’s purpose?
c) What Circumstance types are evident in the text, and where and why do they occur? Are they what you would expect of such a text and why? Again, relate the grammar choices to the context.
2. Interpersonal meanings:
a) What is the pattern of Mood choice in the text and is it what you would expect? Why? If it is unexpected, or if the pattern changes within the text, again offer some suggestions as to why the writer has made these choices to carry out their purpose. What speech functions are the Mood choices signifying? Why and how do you know? Remember that Mood is about the grammar of the relationship between Subject and Finite; Speech Function is about the social purpose the Mood choice is used for.
b) Who/what gets to be Subject of the finite clauses? Are the clauses active, with Subject mapped onto Actor in the case of material process for instance; or are some of the clauses passive, with the Goal/Range as Subject in the case of material process for instance?
c) Are the Finites all or mostly tense Finites (present, past, future) and which tense is dominant? Are there any modal Finites and what is the nature of the modality expressed: obligation, certainty, possibility, probability, ability etc? What is the polarity of the Finites and why? Does the dominant pattern change anywhere? Where and why? Is there modality expressed by means of modal adjuncts anywhere in the text, including in embedded clauses? Where and why?
