Cost and Time Overrun a case study from UAE – Research Paper

You are required to analyse and prepare a written report on the use of specific planning, execution and control capabilities in a real-world project.
1. Briefly describe the organisation(s) involved in the project, the specific planning, execution and control tools and methods and the overall project goals in terms of schedule, cost and product definition. Analyse the relationships between the three and assess the fit between the planning and control methods and tools, the organisation(s) involved and the overall project goals. This section should be brief, but provide the context for your subsequent analysis.
2. Select a particular planning, execution and control problem / opportunity within the project and characterise it. Be specific and focus on a single problem / opportunity. Contrast your observations and the information you collected with the methods and tools discussed in the module material. It is best to identify a problem with which the organisation is having trouble (e.g. running over the initial budget or initial schedule) or an opportunity for improvement (e.g. compressing the project delivery time or preparing a cost monitoring system). If you find a specific problem / opportunity, you will have a target for your analysis. Avoid the temptation to analyse the entire organisation.
3. Develop recommendations and specific ways to help the project organisation to improve the planning and resource management capabilities. Your target audience for the recommendations should be the people responsible for the problem / opportunity in the organisation you are studying. Make specific, actionable recommendations. Present critically the value of your recommendations, assuming they are adopted.
The format of the final report may include specific deliverables (e.g. a CPM chart, cost estimating technique, or earned value analysis technique) in the body of the report. You should select the format that best meets the needs of your client organisation. Be constructive and helpful in your report. Adopt a professional attitude and think of the organisation you are assisting as the client. If you develop a specific deliverable, you should plan to spend time with your client during its development working out the bugs and accommodating changes they suggest. The deliverable should be turned in with annotations indicating how it works.

“Wooden” is a large factory in Littlebury. Littlebury is a small town with a population of approximately 1,200 people. Wooden is the largest employer in the town. In Littlebury, everyone knows each other, as they are either related or friends. Wooden specializes in creating wooden objects from shaving and shaping logs. The factory takes in approximately 1,000 logs a day and operates on a 24/7 schedule. The activity generates an enormous amount of wood dust. There is dust at least an inch thick on all of the equipment, flat surfaces and ceiling rafters. There are some areas in which the dust could be as much as three inches thick.
Wood dust is a combustible material and, given the right circumstances (ignition source, amount of dust, etc.), can be explosive. Also, inhaling fine wood dust can create respiratory illnesses.
Employees have complained over the years about the dust, but the employer still has not created a method to frequently clean the factory. One day Karen, a co-worker, tells you that while she was operating her machine she noticed three quick sparks in the air near her work station. Karen informed her Section Manager about this incident, but the response was that she shouldn’t worry about it. She is now scared that the factory may explode at any moment.
Your Assignment
You are an employee at this factory. You have worked there for over 10 years and know everyone from the owner to the co-workers. This situation has you nervous as well, but you don’t know what to do because you do not want to get anyone in trouble. You decide to speak with several people at the factory.
K E Y P L A Y E R S
Jason Rhine, Safety Coordinator: “There is no way an explosion could occur. Everyone knows that wood dust is not explosive. Karen probably just saw some type of light reflection. Look, in order to ease your mind, I will schedule a major clean up of the facility next month. Just sit tight.”
Alex Riveria, Area Manager: “Do not make any trouble. A major clean-up of the entire facility will stop production for at least two days. Just clean your work area. I have been in this industry for over 30 years, I know a dangerous situation when I see it. Let the experts handle this.”
Karen Parse, Co-Worker: Please contact OSHA. You can make a complaint and they will investigate and handle it. I can’t call since I was just hired two weeks ago. I cannot make any waves, but you have been here long enough. You won’t have any problems. I am so scared because a plant back in my hometown exploded about two months ago because of wood dust. This is really dangerous!
Tony Lord, Owner: “You cannot prove that there is an explosion hazard here. You should only come to me when you know definitely that there is a safety issue. I will consider anything else as slander against me and my company. I do not take too well to disloyal employees.”

Essay – Gender, Sports, and Beauty

OVERVIEW
According to contemporary scholars, gender should be considered a social problem worthy of
sociological exploration and research (Connell 1983). Indeed, gender is regularly at the heart of
many current social issues ranging from health, sports, and advertising, to politics, popular
culture, and sex. Often these issues are presented in ways that make gender either highly visible
or completely invisible, even though we know that gender structures almost every aspect of our
behavior and institutions. In this easy, you will synthesize course content from two different
weeks in order to conduct an analysis of a current social issue and explain its relation to gender.
DETAILS
1. Select TWO different weeks from the second half of the course that you feel fit
together well and that you would like to think about and analyze. Regardless of the
weeks you choose, your analysis must be framed through the lens of gender. For
example, if you are interested in beauty and sexuality, your analysis should then focus
on “Gender, Beauty, and Sexuality.” If you are interested in sports and the body, then
your analysis should concentrate on “Gender, Sports, and the Body.”
2. After deciding on two topics, locate a current event/news story that illustrates both
aspects of what you will be analyzing. For example, if you are interested in “Gender,
Sexuality, and Politics,” then a news story about a well-known political sex scandal
would work well as a focus for your analysis.
Your essay must put forth an argument—something you assert in the essay and then illustrate
using course concepts, readings, and your current event/news story. Your essay should aim to
make connections between the readings and concepts from the two weeks (i.e., synthesis), and as
always, you must provide a full and complete explanation of the concepts you introduce in the
essay. Full and complete explanations utilize all of the resources at your disposal and illustrate a
mastery of the course content, lectures, and readings. Once finished, your essay should have
provided a sociological analysis of the current event/news story that helps readers make sense of
the phenomenon more clearly. In other words, your task is to explain the event using the
analytical tools gained in the course, while also showcasing your knowledge of relevant concepts
and readings.
CITATIONS
You must cite a minimum of three course readings in your paper, and one supplemental reading.
I will post a variety of supplemental readings on the MyRipon portal that you may use. If you
want to use a reading outside of course texts or those I post online, it must be approved by me
ahead of time (that is, before I grade your paper and see a reading I did not approve). The
supplemental readings I post will cover a range of topics and concepts introduced in lecture, and
2
will give you more resources for writing your papers. Better papers usually cite more than the
four minimum sources, as they are typically synthesizing additional course information. You
should cite lecture notes when a reading is not available for the concept you are trying to
support/explain. However, lecture notes do not count toward your four citation minimum. The
citation style should be ASA (American Sociological Association), and a link to the ASA Style

Colonization

Proponents of colonization anywhere usually cite the fact that the colonizer in the end bequeaths to the colonized cultural, political and economic development as a means of validating colonization. However, colonization rarely brings about any development that would otherwise not have been realized even without colonization. It is possible for a superior country to engage in meaningful cultural, economic and political exchanges with a relatively less powerful country without necessarily colonizing the inferior country.

In all instances where a more powerful nation colonizes the less powerful one – as was the case with the British colonization of the American colonies – the intention is usually for the powerful country to benefit at the expense of the ‘lesser’ country. Therefore, on this strength only, colonization should not be justifiable. When Britain colonized the American colonies, some of the supposed benefits for the colonies were increased security under the protection of the British Empire, and a ready market in Britain and Europe for American products such as tea (Allen, 2011, p.60) . However, Britain stood to benefit more from these engagements, and the Americans were taxed exorbitant amounts without even being given a say on the taxation mechanisms decreed from across the Atlantic (Allen, 2011, p.61). Additionally, such economic and military relations between the American colonies and the British Empire could still have been realized without Britain playing boss over America. In the end, the American colonies had to fight the British Empire in the Revolutionary War, leading to unnecessary loss of lives and property to both sides.

Colonization in the end bears no fruit because in all cases, the colonized organize some form of revolution or insurrection against the colonizer. Revolutionary wars lead to unnecessary loss of lives and property. The American Revolutionary war lasted for nearly eight years, leading to loss of lives, property, infrastructure and monuments within the American nation. Britain too suffered. Such a war could have been avoided had the British sought to engage with the Americans on a mutually beneficial basis without the strict dictatorial provisions of colonialism and imperialism.

The downsides to colonialism far outweigh any supposed benefits that might be accrued or placed on the colonized. It is much better for a powerful country to engage less powerful ones in a fair, just and progressive manner for the lasting benefit of both parties.
