Critical Review 1 Vegetarian diets vs Statins
Order Instructions:
Each student will be required to produce a one-page summary (critical review) of research papers on nutrition.
The paper considers the health benefits of vegetarian diets relative to drugs for lowering CVD risk factors.
You will be required to produce a one-page summary (a 1-A4 page; font 12 critical review) of research paper on nutrition topics.
The aim of Assignment 1 is to critically review a research paper.
The critical review requires students to read and understand a research paper. This may take several readings to get a good understanding of the contents. Students should read Abstract, Introduction and Tables first then the Methods and Results and finally the Discussion. In writing a one A4 page review (font 12), students need to present the information in lay terms, as though the reader of the review (the boss of a food company for example) had not read the articleand could not understand scientific terms – thus a summary of the key features of the study with sufficient introduction to explain why it was undertaken, along with the important results and a brief discussion of these under suitable headings (as many as you think are required).
To do this, imagine you are working for a company (consider what sort of company this information would be valuable to) and you are employed to critically review this information for them and finish by saying what is relevant to them.
Note: Do not assume a paper is always representative of high quality research, some studies can be quite poor and you should learn to detect this and indicate this in your critical review.

These are just a few examples; be creative and think about what piques your interest. You might also address a problem that you may want to look at in future research for a thesis or dissertation. You will use either EXCEL or SPSS to conduct the analysis.

• Assignment Description:
The student’s “Social Issues” essay consists of making a case where you—as a concerned student and citizen—are making other Americans aware of a social issue that needs to be addressed. Be absolutely sure that the social issue that you decide to write on is not a cliché or similar in any way, shape, or form with the subject matter that you addressed previously in your intrapersonal essay. You may choose any social issue that you are enthusiastic about researching (internal research only from our textbook). You must, however, address three or four subtopics that represent smaller parts of the greater whole which, of course, is the primary topic that you have chosen to address. You will be expected to use three short quotations that are either one or two lines each in length. (All three quotations must come from only the essays in our textbook.) Please do not use quotations from any other outside sources. In addition, do not consider any essays that have been assigned already.
Also, there will be a limited “Works Cited” after your final written page. The minimum length for this composition will be three pages. The maximum length will be four pages.
Remember, you are attempting to convince an American audience that the social issue that you have chosen to write about should be of great concern to them. Therefore, you, as the writer, will not only bring to the attention of the American public your proposed social issue, but you will also posit one or more solutions that will aid in the improvement of the social issue that you see as an important one to address.
Please spend sufficient and quality time thinking about this assignment before you actually commit anything to paper. Oftentimes as young writers there is a careless—though perhaps well-intended—rush to put something “concrete” down on paper. Instead, try to resist this urge and think and reflect deeply about the various aspects of the assignment and consider the best way to proceed before actually engaging in any formal writing.
Be sure to choose a social issue that holds some degree of seriousness for most Americans. Also, please follow all directions closely. Be aware of due dates and do not fall behind. Of course, be careful to stay completely away from all “Writing No-No’s” that we have previously addressed in past classes. Learn and grow from your last final paper.
