Organizational Behavior Project

This project involves two parts: an individual student paper and an individual student presentation with a total of 150 possible points.

Part One- Individual Student Paper – 125 points

In this project, individual students will conduct primary research to analyze how managers utilize key elements of organizational behavior concepts such as leadership, decision making, motivation, etc. in their organizations. You may choose any organization and you may choose any leadership role within the organization.

To accomplish this task:

2. Choose a leadership position within the organization
3. Write a 5-7 page paper – introducing the organization and the leader, be sure to cite your sources properly.
4. Create a 3-5 minute presentation

Things to cover in the paper:

Brief history of the organization

Suggestions on what to cover regarding the leadership position:

Mastering the Art of the Five Minute Presentation
http://sbinformation.about.com/od/marketingsales/a/fiveminuteprese.htm

The five minute presentation is the most challenging of all presentations to create and deliver. The five minute presentation from an audience perspective is more engaging and less boring than a typical sixty minute talk.

Creating a compelling, focused speech with a single message is the ultimate goal of the five minute presentation. Whether you are crafting the five minute presentation for a venture capital pitch, selling a product, or educating an audience — the creation process is the first vital step. But is five minutes enough time?

What Can Be Accomplished in Five Minutes?
Five minutes doesn’t seem like much time to accomplish anything but keep in mind the insight of George Matthew Adams:
• Napoleon wrote that the reason he beat the Austrians was that they did not know the value of five minutes.
• It took Lincoln less than five minutes to deliver his immortal Gettysburg Address.
• In less than five minutes William Jennings Bryan electrified a great political convention with but a single expression that gave him the nomination for the presidency of the United States.

Five Ways to a Successful Five Minute Presentation
Apply these five methods to your five minute presentation for a memorable means to engage your audience.

Dig Deep: Although your material is limited for your five minute presentation, you’ll still need to do enough research to understand your topic and extract the essence of your talk.

Simple Is: Once you have the materials, narrow down your topic to one core concept. As stated by Chip and Dan Heath, authors of Made to Stick: Why Some Ideas Survive and Others Die state, “How do we find the essential core of our ideas? To strip an idea down to its core, we must be masters of exclusion.” It’s all about just one idea.

Practice, Practice: Rehearsal is critical for a short presentation. You have no time to pause or collect your thoughts. To engage your listeners you’ll need to be smooth not bumbling.

Lead With Wow: During a five minutes presentation you have little time to build a case or draw your audience in. The best approach is to lead with a compelling or controversial position. Make them think right of the bat.

Tell a Story: A presentation full of facts, figures and statistics will quickly lose your audience. One stat may be fine to reinforce a point. But if you want to create a memorable presentation tell a story.
A great five minute presentation is more than enough time to get your funding, educate an audience or sell a client as well as a chance for your five minutes of fame.

Business Ethic

Please don’t type or repeat or retype the question at the beginning of papers.The answers should present understanding and opinions of arguments otherwise it won’t be accepted. Each question need to be answered 1 full single spaced page. There are 8 questions;

1. HB Fuller/Kativo Industries finds itself in quite a bind regarding the sale of Resistol in Honduras. Fuller/Kativo’s product is causing harm to the children the media have called “Los Resistoleros.” The moral theorists we have studied this semester, from Aristotle through Donaldson, would all have something to say regarding this situation. Some would agree with each other, though many would be diametrically opposed in their views. Those who do agree would probably offer very different justifications from their fellows.
Question: Is it morally permissible for HB Fuller to continue to sell Resistol with its current composition or should Fuller remove the product until an acceptable composition is formulated? What sort of moral reasoning directed you to your conclusion and why is this reasoning most relevant? (Put differently, this second question asks: Why should a reasonable person agree with you?)

2. Not too long ago, Milton Friedman argued that the only moral responsibility of managers in a capitalist system is to increase the owner’s investment through profit maximization, with precious few (if any) moral limitations. Many have claimed that a justified sea change occurred when Ed Freeman started arguing to rebuild, revitalize, and re-conceptualize stockholder managerial capitalism to transform it to stakeholder managerial capitalism.
Question: How revolutionary is Freeman’s theory when applied to managerial decisions? When we move from Milton Friedman’s Stockholder theory to Ed Freeman’s Stakeholder theory – does this shift in theories end up telling managers to take different actions, or do they simply disagree about the justifications for roughly the same actions? Feel free to use “real life” to answer this question.

3. Doormen, Maitre D’s, bellmen, taxi drivers, cops, jurors, building inspectors – people in all of these positions receive payments which ordinary language refers to as one of the following: tips, grease payments, gratuities, service charges, and even bribes. Of course, these are not a list of synonyms and a good analysis should be able to distinguish the terms on the list. What is the wrongful and distinguishing element in a bribe? Is Natasha guilty of offering a bribe in the “When is a tip…?” case?

4.Ellen Moore will cost more to employ in Saudi Arabia than an equally qualified man, though no such male candidate exists at the time of the case. Ellen will not only cost more to employ, but the General Manager believes she has a lowered chance of success because she is a woman. Felice N. Schwartz presents arguments to convince businesses regarding the rationality of hiring women even though women cost more to employ. What is Schwartz’s argument against sexism in hiring and promotions, and is this a good argument? Why should a business be blind with regard to sex?

5.Boss Bill has asked his Employee Marge to dinner on more than three occasions. On each occasion, Bill compliments Marge on her appearance and how her choice of clothing accentuates here figure. Marge has never explicitly nor implicitly indicated any sexual interest in Bill, nor has Marge ever openly or willingly discussed any personal matters with Bill. Marge always says “No, thank you” to Bill’s dinner invitations, and she either ignores his compliments or changes the subject to more work-place appropriate topics.
Question: Are Bill’s actions morally impermissible? Why?

6.Bernard and Charles are both applying for an entry level accounting position at HAL, an accounting firm. HAL requires applicants to have at least a 3.0 GPA. Bernard has a 3.3 GPA and is African-American. Charles has a 3.5 GPA and is white. Bernard and Charles are identical in all other relevant ways, such as quality of undergraduate educational institution, etc. What argument best justifies hiring Bernard instead of Charles? Consider and answer an objection Charles may raise for being passed over in hiring.

7.Thomas is the single proprietor of a large management consultancy – PPCP&S. Anders is the highest performing sales person at PPCP&S for the last 5 years. It comes to Thomas’s attention that Anders is a fan of the NY Mets baseball team, so much so that Anders has a tattoo of the NY Mets logo on his shoulder though this is not visible in Anders daily work attire. Thomas fires Anders with merely a “pink slip” and no explanation. The unvoiced motivation for firing Anders is that Thomas hates the NY Mets as much or more than Anders loves the NY Mets. What argument best justifies Thomas’s right to fire Anders? Consider and answer an objection to this argument.

8. Carr argues that bluffing in business is a morally permissible part of the business game because bluffing in business is exactly analogous to bluffing in poker.
Question: Do you agree with Carr regarding the analogy between business and poker? What is wrong with lying (morally impermissible instances of stated deception) that would not be wrong with bluffing (merely speaking falsely)?

International business project

8) Individual Project (or optionally with One partner)
a) The grade on the individual project will be assigned by YOU. You will provide me with a 3
point range that you believe reflects your performance on the paper. If you give yourself 17-19
points (the maximum), and your paper is not of high quality, then I reserve the right to veto your
grade and select a grade that reflects your paper’s contribution relative to the rest of the classes’.
Please see the quality guidelines in the appendix. Maximum of 15 double spaced, 12 inch, times
new roman, 1” margins. Diagrams and charts are part of the page count. Note: Anything less
than 13 pages will not be sufficient for 17 points. Late papers will not be accepted.
b) Topic(should include the following)
i) Select a country that you would either like to work with or in. Ideally this is tied to your
language study (e.g., Mexico for Spanish speakers)
ii) Select an industry that you are interested in working (e.g., Food service).
iii) Select a firm in that industry here in MISSOURI (or the state that you come from if you’d
prefer) that is currently or could possibly do business in that country (e.g., Urban Chestnut).
Alternatively, if you have a job waiting for you, you may select that company.
c) Writing the paper. The paper should contain 4 elements:
i) A history of the company and its competitive advantage here in the domestic market.
(1) You might also put relevant sales, profits, trends, countries in which they’re doing
business in here. Anything relevant about the company that a potential investor might
want to know when evaluating your project.
ii) An overview of your selected country and industry.
(1) You could give the relevant numbers for the country here as well as cultural differences
and the implications of those differences on doing business in that country. Also, any
concerns about doing business in this country (e.g., security, fraud, government red tape)
iii) Can your company compete in your country? Can it transfer its competitive advantage to
your country? Challenges of your company in that market.
(1) This is the most critical part of the paper. Be honest with yourself here. Can your
company really pull this venture off? If not, what can you do to reduce the risk (e.g., joint
venture instead of acquisition). If it was your company, what would you do?
iv) Proposed action steps in order to move forward.
(1) What would you do next? Get into the details here. Do you do more research? Do you
send someone down with the Governor during a trade mission? Do you find a partner?
What about a timeline? Is this year ideal given the state of the company and country?
