Your entire grade will depend on the Final Project. There will be no exams in this class. I will also assign practice problems but they will not be graded. At this point you should have your motivation, research question, literature review, theoretical background, data sources and methods worked out. – 25% second project outline …. You will need to submit an extended outline of your paper. At this point you should significantly improve on the first outline, clarify questions concerning the first outline and you should already have some preliminary results or, if the methods you intend to use have not been covered yet, a very clear description of the intended analysis. Your project MUST use one of the techniques you have seen in class. – 60% final paper … (no extensions unless based on medical reasons). You will need to submit the data and the do-files together with your paper and I should be able to replicate your results using your do file. The do file will be graded. For now, I just need the first part of the paper, and I haven’t decided my topic yet. the professor said we can choose any topic that we are interested in and which ever is interesting to the readers.This is the data analysis course in a graduate applied economic program, the whole course’s grade is depended on this paper.So before you start this paper we might want to talk about the topic and it has to be approved by the professor. which means we should communicate about the topic before you start the work. Discuss Lolita as the last document of a condemned man. Compare this to The Stranger. In both of these novels the main character is a morally compromised man, who ends up in prison for his actions.
Compare the prose style of The Stranger with that of Lolita. How does this difference in prose style reflect upon the characters and their crimes. Both are post-war books. How does the difference in the prose style reflect the author’s differing post-war experience.
Compare Lolita is in some ways an American Road story such as Kerouac’s On the Road, or William Least Heat Moon’s Blue Highways, or Steinbeck’s Travels with Charlie. Road stories are generally picaresques and often involve a quest theme, although not always. Discuss Lolita and how it fits into the picaresque or quest category, if you think it does.
Lolita is sometimes considered an aesthetic novel. In other words the luxury of the prose, the philosophical and psychological attitude taken by Humbert towards his life seems to illustrate the aesthetic philosophy. Is this true? You might want to make comparisons to Dorian Gray.
Discus the idea of social alienation, i.e. not fitting into the culture in which you find yourself. Social alienation of plays a role in both Lolita and Chronicle of a Death Foretold. It is also a theme in The Stranger. In either of these cases how does the alienation experienced by the character reflect that of the author?
Do a research project on Lolita in which you focus on one aspect of the story and research the background through references and critical material. Some possibilities would be the relationship between Lolita and Nabokov’s personal life, his aesthetics, his influences, his own research on the novel, themes of his other novels,
Compare the written novel Lolita to the two different film versions of the story: Stanley Kubrick and Adrian Lynn. How does the film version alter the “message” of the story? What aspects are changed? What is lost or gained in the editing process? Can film do justice to literature?

Compare the social criticism that takes place in Lolita with that of Dorian Gray. Both novels have a character who is particularly disdainful of the society they live in.
Discuss the concept of “honor” in relation to murder. In Lolita and Chronicle of a Death Foretold the murders might is some sense be related to defending the honor of another character. This topic could also be discussed in relation to The Stranger. When is honor an appropriate excuse for killing?

Analysis of Social Movement
1. Background.

The impetus for this project is to make you especially familiar with one particular movement such that you can be one of the class ?experts? on the particularities of that movement as the quarter unfolds. This should be especially helpful as we work through social movement theories and seek evidence to support or refute those theories.

2. The book review.

In writing the review, students should demonstrate a careful reading of the text and consider how their specific case study might be used in order to generalize to the dynamics of social movements in general. The book review, therefore, should be not just an overview of the book, but should discuss, in as much detail as space permits, how this case study relates to the questions raised below. The paper should be written in a standard 12-pt. font with 1-inch margins all around. The review must be between 6-7 pages in length, or approximately 1500-1750 words. It goes without saying that copying or paraphrasing an existing review of the book will be considered plagiarism and treated accordingly; the same goes for collaboration between students in the course, as this is a solo (not collaborative) assignment.

3. Selecting a book.

4. Review content.

The review should begin with the bibliographic information and a brief (less than two pages) description of the content of the book. The dominant portion of the review should address the below issues. Since these are broad issues, and one could not possibly address all of these issues in a single review, I leave it up to you to choose the questions that are most relevant to the movement you are studying.

A. How did external factors influence the movement?
-For example, did the movement depend upon another group for support? What role did the state play in facilitating or repressing the movement? Did the movement arise in order to express specific grievances? Did other movements influence this movement? Were there any major historical events that shaped the movement?

B. How important were internal factors for this movement?
– For example, what types of organizational form(s) were most prevalent in the movement and what consequences did this have for the movement? How were leaders chosen in the movement and what power did they have compared to other participants? What significance did class, race, gender, sexual orientation, or other axes of difference have for this movement?

C. To what extent were culture and identity important for this movement?
– For example, were the goals of the movement challenging of the larger culture or supportive of it? What role did cultural or identity factors play in the movement?s attempts to recruit
participants? Did participants have a sense of larger purpose in their participation? Was the movement successful in framing its goals, ideals, and practices to other (outside) groups?

D. Other questions such as: What types of tactics did the movement employ (and were some more successful than others? If so, why)? What was the response of the state and/or other institutions that the movement targeted? Was the movement successful (both in terms of its self-defined goals and also in the opinion of the author)? What were the consequences of the movement?s success or failure for the internal structure of the movement?
