Midterm Study Guide
The Midterm for this course is held online through Blackboard, if any students wish to take a
pencil and paper version of this exam they will need to see the professor no less than two (2)
weeks before the exam is set to start. Students with accommodations will need to meet with the
professor before or after class at least one (1) week before the exam to discuss the Midterm, this
is the student’s, not the professor’s, responsibility to initiate this discussion. The Midterm will
open Sunday 03/05 at 12:00PM/noon and will close promptly at 12:00PM/noon on 03/07. Any
exams submitted after the exam is closed will not be accepted; no exceptions. There will be class
held on 03/07 so please arrive on time and ready to learn. The Exam will be found above the
Syllabus in the Syllabus/Documents section.
Please note this exam is closed-note, which means students are prohibited from using any source
other than their memory to complete this exam. Students are strictly forbidden from using their
class-notes, textbook, internet or seeking help from another individual or group during the exam.
Anyone caught using outside sources will promptly be turned into Academic Integrity and
receive a “0” on the exam.
There are two sections to this exam, the first is an Identification section and the second is an
Essay Prompt. This guide will break down both of these sections and give you the tools you will
need to get an “A+” on this exam.

Nursing Discussion

a. Select a theory from a discipline other than nursing.
b. Discuss how that theory could support your PICO question problem area and project. c. Discuss the theory origin, concepts, propositions,

empirical adequacy, and pragmatic adequacy.

NOTE:
PICOT question: Will the use of PHQ scale identify and reduce the rate of readmission of depressed patients on an in-patient psychiatry unit?

Using the PICOT acronym, my potential components to address my clinical problem are as follows:
Population of interest (P)- Depressed patients (adult population) admitted on an in-patient psychiatric unit at the Cincinnati VA Medical Center

(CVAMC).
Intervention (I) -The use of Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ) depression scale to predict and reduce readmission rate on an in-patient

psychiatric unit. Manea et. al., (2012) relayed that the PHQ scale is a reliable and valid tool in carrying out the diagnosis of depression

among individuals.
Comparison intervention or group (C)- This could be inpatient admission of patients without the diagnosis of depression on the medical unit.

However, this group may not be included in the study.
Outcome (O)- The outcome of the intervention is to predict and reduce the rate of re-hospitalization among depressed patients on the In-Patient

Psychiatry unit and serve as an important tool in guiding treatment decisions.

Turning Points Project

You will complete a qualitative research project about turning points, or changes across time in relationships. The goal of this project is

to help you better understand communication in a specific type of relationship while giving you the opportunity to apply skills and

concepts learned in CMST: 412.
Turning points are significant events that either cause a relationship to increase or decrease in closeness.
Some examples of turning points in romantic relationships include first dates, big fights, and engagement.
Turning points are typically studied by having individuals reflect on the relationship to identify turning points, when they occurred, and

how they impacted closeness in the relationship.
For the CMST:412 project, you will examine turning points in parent-young adult relationships during the transition to college. ( See

attached excel sheet from our class survey ) .
Your goal is to consider how relationships between parents and children change as children transition into young adulthood and begin

college.
Students enrolled in CMST: 412 will generate the data for this project and you will have access to that data online. See excel enclosed.
For the project, you will read research articles related to turning points and parent-child relationships, analyze data from other

students, and write a research report that links what you have read to the data.
To do well on this project, you need to demonstrate the ability to summarize existing research, argue for the unique contribution of your

project, analyze data to generate nuanced findings about communication in relationships, and explain why your study contributes

significantly to existing research.
Project Overview: A description of each of the individual components of the project and due dates are listed below:
The final paper is a 10-page paper in APA format.
Your paper will include the following sections: Introduction, Literature Review, Methods, Results, Discussion, Conclusion, References.
You are required to have at least seven sources.

adverse events in hospitals

Write a 5 – 6 page ( 1250 4500 words) paper on the following topic. Support your information using
peer-reviewed or scholarly journals. Follow APA format and write as a Microsoft Word document.
Click on this link to the 016 Report: https://oig.hhs.gov/oei/reports/oei-06-09-00090.pdf(I have
attached the report) After reviewing this report, discuss the following questions: – How does the

report define errors, adverse events and preventable adverse events? – What is the function of the

NCC MERP? – How are adverse events determined? – What percentage of adverse events has been
identified as preventable? – In what ways can adverse events be reduced? – Summarize the
recommendations of the study. – How does the principle of learning from errors as a way to

NPO and social media

NPO and social media
There is some good data out there indicating that when nonprofits employ Social Media effectively, they improve their Fundraising potential. Here is one article with Infographics to help make that case (source: Blackbaud): http://npengage.com/nonprofit-fundraising/using-social-media-increases-fundraising-40-percent/. Read the article. Check the data. Think about your client nonprofit (Hurricane Island Foundation, Lawers’ Clearinghouse, MassVOTE). All clients are working to build new Fundraising approaches. Given the data in the accompanying article (and reflecting back on Giving USA from Week 1 and the Blackbaud Report for 2014 in Week 2) how would you advise your client to begin to think about integrating Social Media into their approach for building a successful Fundraising program?

What is Religion?

What is religion? Now that you have encountered three religions- primal, Confucianism and Taoism – Develop a definition of religion based on your empirical study of those three religious traditions. Choose three shared elements or features of these religions that you consider essential to them. Be sure to explore these features across all three religions. Ideally, your defining elements or features will emerge from your study so far (try not to impose your own, preconceived categories on these traditions). If you get stuck, do not consult Webster! Huston Smith offers two very nice discussions of what constitutes religion in his chapters on Confucianism and Buddhism. The best essays will draw not only on the descriptions in Smith, but will provide illustrations from Van Voorst’s collection of scriptures. Remember to advance a claim, make an argument, and support that argument with evidence from our readings.
To do excellent work on the essays, you should incorporate what you’ve learned from Smith, supported by scriptures from the Van Voorst readings, your classmates’ Reflect posts, and your web research (these last two are helpful but less crucial). Your essay should take a position, make an argument and support that argument with reasons and examples. A mere description of a religion does not count as an essay. The essays are due by 11 PM of the assigned date, and will be posted to the appropriate folder of the Discussion Board (First Essays, Final essays). Please put them in .doc format (older style word), .docx or else paste them in the message box.
