The research paper consists of an objective examination of a liberal arts topic related to living in a global community. You may research some

Globalization
Globalization refers to the worldwide phenomenon of technological, economic, political and cultural exchanges, brought about by modern

communication, transportation, and legal infrastructure as well as the political choice to consciously open cross-border links in international

trade and finance. It is a term used to describe how places and human beings are becoming more intertwined with each other around the world

economically, politically, and culturally. Although these globalization links are not new, they are more pervasive than ever before.
• The length of the paper will vary from student to student, but in general, the paper ( Review of the Literature, which is the main body

of the paper) should be between 8 and 10 pages. This does not include the title page, the body of the paper, or the references.
• References must include articles from scholarly journals, books, or websites of professional organizations.
• The paper must cite at least six references.
• No more than two sources can be newspapers and/or weekly news magazines.
• References should be current, no more than five years old, unless you have a justifiable reason for including a historical source.
• No “wiki” sources or sources without named authors.
• The final version must reflect acceptable spelling and grammar, and be written in APA format in Times New Roman 12 point font with 1″

margins. More specific guidelines for the paper will be provided, including a template for the paper.
• Interviews must be with experts in the field as documented by publications in the field or published in a scholarly journal.

research to find relevant sources, and writing the paper:

2. Preliminary References page, listing potential sources in APA format, thesis statement, and an outline – Week 4.

Assimilation Theory (You can either discuss strengths and weaknesses, refine the theory, or suggest assimilation theory policies to reduce inequality; you

don’t have to answer all questions.)

Discuss the strengths and weaknesses of assimilation theory. From what you know from the readings and other sources, how accurate does the theory seem to

be in predicting who will “make it” in our society? What does the theory leave out? Do you agree with its basic assumption that assimilation is desirable?

Does cultural assimilation indeed lead to equal access to positions in the economic, educational, political, etc. structures? According to this theory, who

is seen as responsible for the continued existence of racial and ethnic inequality?

The theory presents assimilation as a more or less automatic process. Refine the theory by listing factors which might hinder or facilitate the speed and

degree of assimilation for different groups. To help you come up with a list of such factors, here are seven racial and ethnic groups in alphabetical

order: American Indians, Chinese, Germans, Irish, Italians, Mexicans, Swedes. Which three of these groups are the most likely to assimilate, which are the

least likely to assimilate to White Anglo-Saxon or Anglo American ways? Then discuss why you ordered the groups in this way. This should lead to a list of

factors which make assimilation easier or harder for different racial and ethnic groups.

Pretend to be an assimilation theorist. Which policies would you suggest to reduce racial and ethnic inequality in the U.S.?

 

Are multinational corporations (MNCs) now more powerful than nation-states? Will their continuing influence and power produce greater global

inequality? Or are they the leading agents of global prosperity?
