What were the relative strengths and weaknesses of Ngo Dinh Diem as the leader of South Vietnam and what explains the US views of Diem’s capabilities over time?

Nation Building and Insurgency

No unread replies. No replies.

This discussion addresses the following outcomes:

  • Analyze US efforts at nation-building in South Vietnam (CO#1);
  • Examine the growth of insurgency in South Vietnam as well as the links between this insurgency and North Vietnam (CO#1);

As the French vacated Vietnam, the US became the de facto sponsor of the country of South Vietnam. South Vietnam, with a smaller population than its northern counterpart, was, in effect, a Cold War experiment for the United States. As the old colonialist order unraveled after World War II and communism threatened Asia, US policymakers sought to create in South Vietnam an example of how a stable, democratic (or, at the very least, passably democratic) developing country with a market economy could flourish in the postwar world. Indeed, South Vietnam would be one of the first US attempts at nation building in the Cold War.

In this activity you will examine both the nation building and growing insurgency that characterizes the era beginning with the Geneva Accords and ending with the final year of the Eisenhower presidency. Prior to completing this discussion activity, be sure to read Chapter 2 in Herring, the Final Declaration of the Geneva Conference, and the Letter from Eisenhower to Ngo Dinh Diem. In addition, make sure to view/listen to the Module 2 Notes Presentation (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site.. After doing so, consider the following questions as you craft a post of at least 250 words:

  • What were the relative strengths and weaknesses of Ngo Dinh Diem as the leader of South Vietnam and what explains the US views of Diem’s capabilities over time?
  • Was the southern insurgency more a product of concerted efforts on the part of North Vietnam or Diem’s weaknesses as a leader?
  • Contemplate the quandary facing Eisenhower during the final years of his second term with relation to Vietnam. In retrospect, what do you think the US should have done differently (if anything) leading up to the end of the Eisenhower years?

After you have posted, read through the postings of your peers. Choose two of your peers and respond to their posts by offering a substantive addition to their post and/or a thoughtful reflection on a particular aspect of their post. Each response to a peer should be approximately 100 words in length and should contribute to the discussion in progress. Be sure that your responses are respectful, substantive, and consistent with the expectations for discussion, as stated by the prompt. Please direct to me any questions you may have that are related to discussion interaction.

What two motivational interviewing techniques would be helpful in assessing substance abuse in this case?

Motivational Interviewing and Stages of Change

The stages of change model suggests that clients who are in the process of changing addictive behavior move through successive stages, from limited insight to maintenance of change. These stages will be presented by the client’s attitudes and behaviors. It is the job of the clinician to identify the correct stage and employ specific interventions for the treatment to be successful. Most clients opting for an assessment will likely be in the early stages of change.

The major tenets of motivational interviewing were designed to provide clinicians with tools to facilitate the change process in clients. Extensive research supports its effectiveness and it has become the standard in the past decade. These techniques are grounded in the client-centered approach rather than the confrontational approach to substance abuse treatment used in previous decades.

Use the module readings and the Argosy University online library resources to research motivational interviewing and the stages of change model.

Download and review the case study.

Restricted Refugee Rights and Terrorism: A Comparison of Refugee Crisis in Pakistan and Turkey

Restricted Refugee Rights and Terrorism: A Comparison of Refugee Crisis in Pakistan and Turkey

In this research project I want to compare the refugee crisis in Pakistan and Turkey from the human rights perspective.

Which social and economic rights of refugees have been restricted in the Pakistan, and the effect of this situation on the terrorism risk above refugees?

Refugee crises and terrorism are interrelated, and it is possible to argue that when host states handle influxes of refugees poorly, it creates conditions favorable for terrorism. We have seen painful examples in recent history where terrorist movements have sprung from groups of refugees; for instance: Afghan refugee community in Pakistan that the Taliban raised.

Some terrorist organizations easily gained supporters from the Afghani refugee group in Pakistan, I would like to assess if there is this kind of risk for Syrian refugees in Turkey! The journey of refugees would end up at the terrorism point in some ways: they would create one group in the future or they could join an existing terrorist organisation or they might become one of the victims of human trafficker who sometimes supply “people” to terrorist organization.

It is needed to ask to what extent there is a risk of breeding a new extremist or terrorist organization within current refugee groups. We see news reports that assess how likely it is that extant terrorists can infiltrate groups of refugees. Beside these concerns, it is important to investigate on the risk of having a new organization in the future. To be able to have a satisfactory explanation for this matter, Syrian refugee’s situation and their problems that prevent them from integration in Turkish community in Turkey need to be underlined. By doing so, Afghan refugee crisis in Pakistan will be an effective case to compare with the situation in Turkey. The questions of which policies were followed by the Pakistani government, which refugee rights were given to Afghan refugees and which ones were not, how Taliban could gather thousands of supporters from them also need to be addressed.

It is essential, however, not to misinterpret these concerns as seeing all refugees as potential terrorists. This idea is not right. No one is born to be a terrorist. It is logical to assume that these people wish to see no more violence as this is one of the main reasons they have fled from Syria. They could have stayed in their hometown if they supported extremist groups. However, if they move to another country and become marginalized and discriminated against, over time they could become easy targets for extremists who promise them liberation or a better life. Turkey needs to be aware of the risk and should do its best to protect this young generation of people as well as the peace in Turkish society.

Given these considerations; following questions come to my mind but they are not academic enough and not concreate research question but would be useful to show the center of my ideas:

  • To what extent is there a risk of a new terrorist group forming in the southeast part of Turkey in the future? To what extent is this a risk for among the young generation of Syrian refugees in Turkey?
  • What needs to be done by the Turkish government and international organizations to be able to prevent or mitigate this generation from the danger of terrorism?
  • Comparison the situation in Turkey compare with the crises in Pakistan following the influx of refugees from Syria and Afghanistan?

These are the main ideas that came up to my mind for research proposal for migration law school.  I kindly ask you to create an academic and concrete research proposal around these concerns.

In the proposal example that I saw from the university that I am applying includes following titles:

Awareness of Internet Security?

The University IS Team has for some time been concerned about the level of security of University Systems and has launched a number of

campaigns about such amongst students and staff. Besides these campaigns, there is also a wider concern about whether or not students are aware

of the vulnerability of some of the information stored on their mobile devices. The goal of this survey is therefore two-fold: to find out

students’ attitude to storing information and what measures they use to ensure their information is safe. Hence you are asked to develop a

questionnaire that can be sent round University of Edinburgh students to judge these aspects on behalf of the University’s IS Team.

1) A general overview of both positive and negative attitudes about release of information within the University;

2) An estimate of the proportion of students who may have positive attitudes;

and negative

3) An exploration of the methods students use to secure their mobile devices.

The IS Team requires that the findings should be representative in general of the University students that might have been affected, and

comparisons can be made by

• gender;

• programme of study;

• countries/regions of permanent residence.

Task:

A. To write a Research Proposal Report for the University’s IS Team, which should outline the following:

1) The target population and relevant segments within it (10 points).

2) The sampling method you plan to use with the sampling frame (where appropriate) and details of how this sample will be selected (15 points).

3) Method(s) of data collection (i.e. questionnaire/focus groups/in-depth interviews) (10 points).

4) Method(s) of administration (i.e. postal, face-to-face, telephone, e-mail, etc) (10 points).

Each of the above should include the justification of your choices.

B. Questionnaire (40 points). If an adopted research design involves several data collection methods/instruments, only one questionnaire should

be included, but the remaining data collection instruments should be described in the report, with comments made regarding the relationship

between all data collection instruments used.

Continued …

1 The Report should be no longer than 1000 words (excluding the questionnaire). The Questionnaire provided should be no longer than 4 pages in

length and should be contained within an appendix. Presentation of the questionnaire should be such that it could be used immediately, i.e.

professional presentation, question routing and response categories made clear etc., and care should be taken to ensure that the content

addresses all areas outlined in the research objectives. Additional 15 points will be given for presentation, credibility (the extent the

project is realistic) and logical cohesion (e.g., the suggested sampling method can be implemented with the proposed method of administration).

The ELECTRONIC file of the project should be submitted via Turnitin on Learn by 2.00pm on Wednesday 1 st November 2017. Please see the

Procedures for Coursework Submission in the Coursework folder on Learn. The project is to be completed as an individual piece of work. Please

note the policy on plagiarism and the penalties for late submission, which are posted on Learn.

You DO NOT have to collect any information with your questionnaire. Only a Report and copy of the Questionnaire are required for the

assignment. However, you may want to pilot your questionnaire on a friend.

PLEASE DO NOT approach any organisations in connection with this piece of work. The exercise is fictitious. If you wish to discuss please raise

Assignment 4: Special Problems and Challenges and the Future of Policing In America

Due Week 10 and worth 200 points

Modern law enforcement operations and strategies are driven by best practices in the areas of data collection and manipulation, addressing special populations, and preventing organized criminal activities.  A tremendous amount of specialization has evolved in today’s sphere of policing, especially among federal, state, and local agencies. Perhaps, what is most evident is how the law enforcement agencies of the federal government have retooled to meet today’s challenge of terrorism. Use your textbook, the Internet, and / or Strayer library to research credible sources on the aforementioned issues as they relate to law enforcement operations and management.

Write a six to eight (6-8) page paper in which you:

  1. Identify and describe the major functions of the four (4) agencies of the Department of Justice. Of the four agencies, provide a rationale for which agency you feel has the greatest responsibility as it relates to federal law enforcement.
  2. Explain the purposes of the Uniform Crime Reports (UCR) and the National Crime Information Center (NCIC). Identify and discuss the various weaknesses related to the accuracy of the Uniform Crime Report (UCR).
  3. Describe the major roles of police executives using the Mintzberg model of chief executive officers. Of the executive roles described in the model, provide a rationale for which role you feel is the most important for a chief executive officer’s success.
  4. Examine two (2) legislative enactments that are in place to help combat terrorism. Provide your opinion on the effectiveness of these enactments in regards to combatting terrorism.
  5. Analyze the problems related to determining the actual numbers of hate crimes and what makes hate crimes different from other crimes.
  6. Use at least four (4) quality references including the textbooks. Note: Wikipedia and other Websites do not qualify as academic resources.

Your assignment must follow these formatting requirements:

  • Be typed, double spaced, using Times New Roman font (size 12), with one-inch margins on all sides; citations and references must follow APA or school-specific format. Check with your professor for any additional instructions.
  • Include a cover page containing the title of the assignment, the student’s name, the professor’s name, the course title, and the date. The cover page and the reference page are not included in the required assignment page length.

The specific course learning outcomes associated with this assignment are:

  • Contrast the organization and administration of federal law enforcement agencies with that of state agencies.
  • Contrast the organization and administration of municipal law enforcement agencies with that of county agencies.
  • Visualize the future of policing in America and identify some of the forces and technologies shaping that future.
  • Use technology and information resources to research issues in law enforcement operations and management.
  • Write clearly and concisely about law enforcement operations and management using proper writing mechanics.

Music

The principles of unity and variety apply to all music, regardless of compositional style or historical period.
Now that you are familiar with the concepts in the first section of the course (Basic Musical Concepts), and you have seen how they work on different pieces of music, try your hand, mouse, and ears at how they operate in a music selection that you may not have heard yet: “Manha de Carnaval” by Sigman and Bonfa.

Assignment #3 Audio:

Your analysis should include:
• The number of different musical ideas in the piece (for example, can we say that there are two ideas A and B? Or is there only one?)
• The timings (start and stop times) of the different sections of the piece. (Hint: Listen for changes in musical ideas and timbre, for example, points when different instruments come in or give way to others.)
• 00:00 —— 00:00
• How unity and variety are exemplified in those sections through the use of:
1. Dynamics
2. Timbre
3. Pitch
• Although there are sections that feature one instrument over others, whether you think this is a piece for a solo performer or for an ensemble.
00:00 ——- 03:25
• A list of the characteristics of the musical style closest to the one this piece exemplifies. (Hint: Look at the last lecture in the first section of the course)
• Whether you think this piece serves (or could serve) a specific purpose.
• Whether or not it has any specific connotation(s) for you.
