Course Learning Project (CLP) 1 – Instructions
Using at least one mainstream popular medium (e.g., magazine, newspaper, web link, et al) find one news-worthy marketing-related article that best provides an excellent and current example that will allow you to fully comprehend, apply, analyze, synthesize and discuss consumer behavior and “product,” the first “P” in the marketing mix. The more recent the article the better. Your selection should be an article that has “consequence” (is important to a lot of people for a lot of reasons) and will serve to illustrate marketing-related concepts.
It doesn’t matter if the article relates to a consumer or business product. What IS important is that it is timely “news” about a brand currently being (or soon to be) marketed, or a marketing environmental change. The article ideally will allow you to briefly summarize its newsworthiness, as well as any important product and/or consumer behavior-related points that you can tie in from your textbook readings.
You should cover the following in paragraph form in the order provided:
1. Introduce the article and summarize its essence. Answer the following question: “Why is this article a good choice to help us learn more about product and consumer behavior?”
2. Provide relevant quantitative (ROI, profitability, etc.) and qualitative (nature of business, social responsibility, etc.) information about the brand. If it’s a new product, then give a brief description of the industry as a whole.
3. Identify and explain any current or future external favorable and/or unfavorable economic, technological, political, legal, cultural, social, and other environmental factors and trends (including competition) that you think may impact the product-market you’ve identified.
4. Briefly discuss what you think (or can find via additional research) are possible segmenting dimensions such as demographics, geographics, etc.), as well as the potential size (number of people, dollar purchase potential, likely growth), and any key psychological and social influences on buying the product (e.g., what needs does this product satisfy?).
5. Identify 1) who the current (and potential) competitors are for this brand; and 2) the product’s potential competitive advantage (i.e., unique selling proposition).
Important Note: Be aware that plagiarism is a serious issue. This paper may be a “Safe Assign” document which means I will be able to easily check to see that any words that are not your own are properly cited. So….Make sure you properly CITE SOURCES (including your textbook), and/or use quotes, and/or use attribution statements (e.g., according to….) if you are including verbatim or almost verbatim information, comments, or ideas from others in your paper. INCLUDE a bibliography as per APA style, as well. If you have any questions, please review the University guidelines on plagiarism.

Week 3 Lecture Notes

Learn Roles and Involvement in Social Media by Studying the Wrong Approach!
1. Isolate your team.

Everyone knows that corporate life can be fraught with politics and that all other forms of marketing are dying. The best thing to do as a social media leader is to shelter your team from all other teams.

Encourage them all to exist inside a bubble, communicating only with you and perhaps your social agency. If you ever do need to communicate with other teams, be sure to speak only in terms of “likes”, retweets, and repins. Never consider where social media could integrate into broader campaigns or into the overall marketing mix.

2. Don’t measure your results.

Social media is so unique, why try to reduce the magic to numbers? You know in your heart that the engaging campaign you just ran truly moved the needle, so evaluate it in terms of feelings rather than math. Besides—you’re so busy doing, that it doesn’t make sense to stop doing in order to measure. That would take your eye off the prize.

3. Make social communications one-way only.

The best way to make friends is to talk about yourself incessantly. So don’t ask questions. Don’t ask for customer opinions or feedback, and in the unfortunate event you get any, ignore it completely. And when it comes to negative feedback? Enforce a strict rule to delete any and all negative comments, flag them as “inappropriate,” and definitely don’t respond—that would just be encouraging the bad customer behavior. Listening to feedback leads only to tragedies like this (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site., where feelings and egos get hurt.

4. Post to drive business value, not customer value.

Also known as WIIFM (what’s in it for me), this commandment ensures that all your social communications drive just your own agenda.

After all, people need to be told what to do and how to buy. So if they haven’t responded to your 5% off promotion, keep reposting it until it works—over and over and over. Who needs ads when you can post for free?

5. Don’t let data interfere with your ideas.

Never let data interfere with what your gut or articles on the internet are telling you. You know how pesky data can be, particularly when it just won’t support a theory that you like. So when data is inconveniencing you, ignore it at all costs. Call it “inconclusive,” if you must call it anything, and then bury it.

6. Covet big numbers!

It’s hard enough to get the C-suite to pay attention to social media, so ensure that you focus on the biggest numbers you can find. In most cases, this will be fans or followers. Don’t worry about engagement, conversion, or the quality of your audience or customer loyalty. These kinds of metrics really only confuse the issue.

7. Treat social media as a magical ATM.

Is your content shareable? Are your customers your advocates? Is there a positive dialogue around your brand online? Is your social network engaged? Who cares?! Engagement is too wishy-washy—you need some hard ROI. And if your customers aren’t engaging with you, go right to paid media and skip owned content entirely. You can’t waste your time worrying about the little stuff like building community.

8. Ignore the competition.

Your company is as unique as you, and if you’re going to get ahead it’s best to ignore the competition. Competitive performance is just a distraction. And if you grew your audience or your engagement by 10%, it would only depress you to learn that your competitor grew 200%. And why set yourself up for those kinds of difficult feelings? You know in your heart that you’re massively outpacing everyone. And that’s all you need to know.

9. Demand only good news.

Nobody likes a Debbie Downer, and we all want to be appreciated for our efforts and hard work. What’s the point of doing all this work to not be the leader? So if your agency—or anyone, for that matter—tries to pretend like you’re not crushing your marketplace, close the browser or burn the printed report immediately. You don’t want that kind of bad energy in your office, let alone in your mind.

10. Delegate social media only to the young—and then don’t support them.

After all, if you can eat a pizza, you can make a pizza, so it makes sense to give social media over to the digital natives. Any one of them will do. They grew up on Facebook, so they will know how to market your 100-year-old brand without any training, guidelines, or strategy. A no-rules policy inspires creativity and honesty, leading to gems like this (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site..

And if you can’t hand social media over to a Millennial, you can just make it someone’s second job and see what happens. How much time could social media require, anyway? It’s not like there’s over a billion people on it or anything.

A Defense of French Imperialism

A Defense of French Imperialism
Jules Ferry was Prime Minister of France as that nation launched its imperial expansion. In a debate with member of the French Parliament, Ferry Defends the decision to expand. Read his remarks and respond to the following questions:

According to Ferry, what recent developments in world trade have made it urgent for France to have colonies? What arguments against imperialism have been raised by Ferry’s critics? How does he counter them? What non-economic arguments does Ferry offer in favor of imperialism?

The paper should include: A comment as to the historical context in which the comments were made
Responses to questions the comments raise
A personal evaluation of what you think the out come of those comments might be.

JULES FERRY: ON FRENCH COLONIAL EXPANSION (1884)
The policy of colonial expansion is a political and economic system . . . that can be connected to three sets of ideas: economic ideas; the most far-reaching ideas of civilization; and ideas of a political and patriotic sort.
In the area of economics, I am placing before you, with the support of some statistics, the considerations that justify the policy of colonial expansion, as seen from the perspective of a need, felt more and more urgently by the industrialized population of Europe and especially the people of our rich and hardworking country of France: the need for outlets [for exports]. Is this a fantasy? Is this a concern [that can wait] for the future? Or is this not a pressing need, one may say a crying need, of our industrial population? I merely express in a general way what each one of you can see for himself in the various parts of France. Yes, what our major industries [textiles, etc.], irrevocably steered by the treaties of 1860-1 into exports, lack more and more are outlets. Why? Because next door Germany is setting up trade barriers; because across the ocean the United States of America have become protectionists, and extreme protectionists at that; because not only are these great markets . . . shrinking, becoming more and more difficult of access, but these great states are beginning to pour into our own markets products not seen there before. This is true not only for our agriculture, which has been so sorely tried . . . and for which competition is no longer limited to the circle of large European states . . . . Today, as you know, competition, the law of supply and demand, freedom of trade, the effects of speculation, all radiate in a circle that reaches to the ends of the earth . . . . That is a great complication, a great economic difficulty; . . . an extremely serious problem. It is so serious, gentlemen, so acute, that the least informed persons must already glimpse, foresee, and take precautions against the time when the great South American market that has, in a manner of speaking, belonged to us forever will be disputed and perhaps taken away from us by North American products. Nothing is more serious; there can be no graver social problem; and these matters are linked intimately to colonial policy.
Gentlemen, we must speak more loudly and more honestly! We must say openly that indeed the higher races have a right over the lower races . . . .
I repeat, that the superior races have a right because they have a duty. They have the duty to civilize the inferior races . . . . In the history of earlier centuries these duties, gentlemen, have often been misunderstood; and certainly when the Spanish soldiers and explorers introduced slavery into Central America, they did not fulfill their duty as men of a higher race . . . . But, in our time, I maintain that European nations acquit themselves with generosity, with grandeur, and with sincerity of this superior civilizing duty. I say that French colonial policy, the policy of colonial expansion, the policy that has taken us under the Empire [the Second Empire of Napoleon III], to Saigon, to Indochina [Vietnam], that has led us to Tunisia, to Madagascar—I say that this policy of colonial expansion was inspired by. . . the fact that a navy such as ours cannot do without safe harbors, defenses, supply centers on the high seas . . . . Are you unaware of this? Look at a map of the world.
Gentlemen, these are considerations that merit the full attention of patriots. The conditions of naval warfare have greatly changed . . . . At present, as you know, a warship, however perfect its design, cannot carry more than two weeks’ supply of coal; and a vessel without coal is a wreck on the high seas, abandoned to the first occupier. Hence the need to have places of supply, shelters, ports for defense and provisioning. . . . And that is why we needed Tunisia; that is why we needed Saigon and Indochina; that is why we need Madagascar. . . and why we shall never leave them! . . . Gentlemen, in Europe such as it is today, in this competition of the many rivals we see rising up around us, some by military or naval improvements, others by the prodigious development of a constantly growing population; in a Europe, or rather in a universe thus constituted, a policy of withdrawal or abstention is simply the high road to decadence! In our time nations are great only through the activity they deploy; it is not by spreading the peaceable light of their institutions . . . that they are great, in the present day.
Spreading light without acting, without taking part in the affairs of the world, keeping out of all European alliances and seeing as a trap, an adventure, all expansion into Africa or the Orient—for a great nation to live this way, believe me, is to abdicate and, in less time than you may think, to sink from the first rank to the third and fourth.

Job Performance

Throughout history, different presidents are viewed as having done a good job while in office, and others are seen as not having been so effective. Your task in this assignment is to research and evaluate our current president. Think about the following issues:
How well is the president doing in terms of our relationship with other nations?
What type of relationship does the president have with Congress?
Are things getting done in Washington?
Research information about our president’s job performance and write a 2-3 page persuasive essay (one that attempts to convince others to agree with your opinion) explaining your views on the quality level of our president’s job performance. Be sure to use examples from your research to back up your explanation.

Your Base Group also provides a structure for completing academic tasks, especially those involving critical discourse. Research suggests that critical

discourse becomes easier and more effective in the context of positive relationships (Johnson, 2000). You may recognize this effect in your own life

when you consider those people in your life with whom you engage in most conflict. Ironically perhaps, we are much more likely to have conflict with

those people who are closest to us, be it our partner, close friend, parent, etc. This does not necessarily mean that we don’t have conflict with other

people, but rather that we often avoid conflict in formal contexts. During the course of each module, I hope that your Base Group becomes an

increasingly safe place for individual members to share in critical discourse – that is, to engage in the process of formulating (e.g., summarizing,

elaborating) and fermenting complex ideas (criticizing ideas, asking for justification, taking an alternative viewpoint, etc).
