The paper shall be 6 pages within a half page (5 ½- 6 ½ pages) not counting the works cited page.

includes sources beyond books and articles, like people you discussed it with, or notes from a class. If you have any questions about the

responsible use of sources, please see me and clear those up before submitting the paper.

You must have five scholarly, secondary sources and two primary sources. You are most likely to find scholarly sources quickly through the

library databases. If I determine any of your sources is not scholarly, it may not count toward your required five. For the primary sources

use the same version as we did for class. In most cases that will be our anthology.

The paper will fully comply with all MLA document and documentation guidelines. See A Writer’s Reference.

This paper will be an extended literary analysis of Much Ado about Nothing and one other work(The Exchange)read for class. You will need to

find some relationship between them. This relationship may be based on an element of literature (both authors use biblical allusion, for

example), a reading from a particular perspective (a feminist reading of two works, for example) or based on a shared historical, social, or

political context (two pieces that both come out of a time of war, for example).
The thesis should be narrow, specific, and argumentative. Back it up with appropriately forceful language. Eliminate vague, wordy, and/or

passive language from your paper.
Remember that a negative thesis is much harder to prove than a positive one. It is harder to prove, and perhaps pointless to argue, that “Kubla

Khan” is NOT based on Paradise Lost than that it is.
The paper will be organized around a thesis that makes an original, insightful interpretation of the literary works. See the class handout on

thesis statements.
Secondary sources are to be used only to support your thesis. You are better off not reading literary criticism until you have formed your own

ideas on the works. Begin the research by (re)reading the works that interest you, taking notes, and formulating a hypothesis before you start

looking for sources.
Students tend to erroneously focus on the length of the paper rather than the content. You are better off narrowing your focus and analyzing

closely and deeply than taking a broad view and skimming the surface. Yes, that approach requires more of you than simply collecting and

reprinting published information, but the rewards are greater. I am looking for essays that closely examine the elements of the literature,

down to the level of individual words and sounds. This is not a research report, critique, or opinion piece; this is an academic argument

paper.
All papers get better with guided revision. You can earn up to five extra points on the paper by documenting a consultation in The Writing

Center.

About the Assignment

· Textual Analytical: Please analyze one subject text. Make sure the paper is written in the present tense even when retelling parts of

the text. The bulk of the essay should reflect inference/critical thought. A few outside sources can be used as well to help support the

specific words, or ideas that help reveal the author’s rhetorical intentions. If outside sources are used to look up definitions, they

need to be added to a Work Cited page.

· Overall, the essay should contain a clear thesis, or claim, which addresses the author’s rhetoric, possible identifiable rhetorical

devices and/or persuasive ways that the author uses, organized paragraphs (move in the order of the text), supportive evidence (quoted

text from sources being analyzed) and correct use of MLA citation. The essay full draft should be 5 pages or longer (not including Work

Some small tips on building Analysis

Intros:

Introductions usually include an overview of an idea/ theme / pattern that you noticed about the text.
It also introduces the type of text (ie. Short story), author (ie. Nadine Gordimer, and “Title” (ie. “Once Upon a Time”).
This section also might tell the audience what type of persuasion you will focus on – pathos (emotional appeals), ethos (credibility or

lack of, how does the author gain trust from the reader and/or not), and/or logos (logical patterns, facts, data etc). It could also focus

on a theme that the author might be trying to push forward to the reader.
Use your judgment on whether or not you can fit a small summary about the text in this section.
A concluding statement for your introduction might be a thesis, or main [opinionated] claim, you will prove throughout the essay.
Argument/Analysis (based on a systematic organization): Per Paragraph

When discussing your analysis try and write in the present tense.
When referencing the author use the last name. No first names.
Only analyze important evidence and author’s strategies that you feel connect with the thesis / main claim. Therefore, you don’t have to

analyze the entire essay, story, or poem.
Topic Sentences: I recommend you make a restatement of your claim and the type of persuasion you will discuss (do not include examples

/evidence in your topic sentence).
The topic sentence should be followed by “evidence” (cite). Evidence, or facts from the text, should be “directly quoted” followed by in-

text citation (Gordimer 257). For poems, please use line numbers (Lockwood lines 2-5).
Once you select your evidence, infer and start your analysis: Which words prove your point? and how? What do the words literally mean in

the world? Figurative reference? What does it mean to you? Or audience?
Why would the author use these words or pattern in your opinion? And how does this relate to ethos, or pathos, or logos.
Therefore, how does this example persuade the reader? Who is the audience? or what type of emotion does this solicit from the reader?
Is there a moment in which you disagree with the author’s strategy? Make sure you are talking about the author’s rhetorical techniques.

This last unit focuses on the concept of relevance in preaching. Christians have the most important message in the world. Because of this, we need to know how best to approach our audience for the greatest chance at reception. This approach is what we will study this last week.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION
Much is said today about the word relevant. First, we must define what we are talking about: “…having direct bearing on the matter in hand; pertinent.” (dictionary.com)

If this be the definition we will work with, let us ask ourselves a question- Are we, the people of God, “having a direct bearing” on the world around us via our Gospel communication? Do those who hear us believe that what we say matters? Further, does what we say facilitate life change in our hearers? These are the questions that anyone who communicates the Gospel must ask themselves on a regular basis.

Yet another question we must consider- in our attempt to be relevant, how far is too far? In other words, at what point do we become so much like those we are attempting to reach for the Gospel that we lose our distinctive and no longer stand apart as the people of God? A glance at some Christians’ facebook page will show that their behavior, language and values vary little from secular culture around us. So what separates them from secular culture?

Lastly, you may want to consider a visit to www.relevantmagazine.com. Their purpose statement states the following-

Optional Videos on Inpatient Group Therapy
For anyone interested in group therapy within an inpatient or residential setting, there is an additional video you can view. Note it is not

required for this discussion. This is entitled Inpatient Group Therapy Volume 2, Part 1. This is based on an 1:15 minute group session. After

starting Part 1, it is advised to go to Chapters and view the 6 minute “Introduction” to gain an understanding of the group members then click

“Orientation” to view the first 4 minutes of the session. The second vignette of this session is “Agenda Formation” and runs for about 23

minutes (13:55 to 37:00) – this provides a more complete demonstration of this session.

You can then view Inpatient Group Therapy Volume 2, Part 2, to see the rest of the session by going to the Chapter titled “Agenda Filling”. This
