Each study analysis will be 1,000-1,250 words and submitted in one document. As with the assignments in Topics 1-3, this should connect to your identified practice problem of interest (MEDICATION ERRORS) Submit the assignment along with an electronic version of the article used for the analysis.
Refer to the resource entitled “Research Critique Part 2.” Questions under each heading should be addressed as a narrative, in the structure of a formal paper. You are also required to include an Introduction and Conclusion.
Prepare this assignment according to the APA guidelines.

To write a critical appraisal that demonstrates comprehension of the research study conducted, and respond to each of the action items listed under the headings below. Successful completion of this assignment requires that you provide a rationale, include examples, or reference content from the study in your response.

CRITICAL APPRAISAL GUIDELINES: QUANTITATIVE STUDY
Introduction
• Develop a topic sentence in which you will define the purpose of the Research Critique, Part 2
• Formulate a thesis statement which briefly provides a broad indication of your point of view in composing this assignment.
• Include a summary outline to describe the organization and main topics you will include in the body paragraphs of the assignments (see below sections).
Protection of Human Participants
• Identify the benefits and risks of participation addressed by the authors. Were there benefits or risks the authors do not identify?
• Was informed consent obtained from the subjects or participants?
• Did it seem that the subjects participated voluntarily in the study?
• Was institutional review board approval obtained from the agency in which the study was conducted?

Data Collection
• Are the major variables (independent and dependent variables) identified and defined? What were these variables?
• How were data collected in this study?
• What rationale did the author provide for using this data collection method?
• Identify the time period for data collection of the study.
• Describe the sequence of data collection events for a participant.

Data Management and Analysis
• Describe the data management and analysis methods used in the study.
• Did the author discuss how the rigor of the process was assured? For example, does the author describe maintaining a paper trail of critical decisions that were made during the analysis of the data? Was statistical software used to ensure accuracy of the analysis?
• What measures were used to minimize the effects of researcher bias (their experiences and perspectives)? For example, did two researchers independently analyze the data and compare their analyses?

Findings / Interpretation of Findings: Implications for Practice and Future Research
• What is the researcher’s interpretation of findings?
• Are the findings valid or an accurate reflection of reality? Do you have confidence in the findings?
• What limitations of the study were identified by researchers?
• Was there a coherent logic to the presentation of findings?
• What implications do the findings have for nursing practice? For example, can the study findings be applied to general nursing practice, to a specific population, to a specific area of nursing?
• What suggestions are made for further studies?

Conclusion
• Emphasize the importance and congruity of the thesis statement
• Provide a logical wrap-up to bring the appraisal to completion and to leave a lasting impression and take-away points useful in nursing practice.
• Incorporate a critical appraisal and a brief analysis of the utility and applicability of the findings to nursing practice.
• Integrate asummary of the knowledge learned.

Article Critique

Article Critique

Critique considers both the strengths and weaknesses of a text and requires you to spend some time summarizing the major points the author is

attempting to present. The essay should be in Times New Roman 12 point type, double-spaced and at least two pages in length.
The introduction of the critique should include the author’s name, title of the article, the purpose, and the author’s thesis. You should also include

your own thesis, which is your overall evaluation of the essay. In other words, sum up what you believe to be the essay’s overall strengths and

weaknesses. In addition, you might provide some background material on the topic and note whether or not it is of current interest.

The body of the essay should consist of a summary of the article’s key points followed by an analysis of his/her presentation. Use the following

questions and the ones presented in my lecture notes on chapter 3 as a guide when considering the author’s argument:

1. Is the author’s source material relevant, accurate, and up-to-date?

2. Has the author considered opposing viewpoints?

3. Is the author simply attacking another viewpoint without offering solid evidence to the

contrary?

4. Does the author make broad sweeping generalizations?

5. Does the author’s conclusions logically follow the original premise?

6. Is the author’s evidence convincing or adequate?

7. Does the author oversimplify a much more complex issue?

8. Is the author using emotionally loaded terms to cover up a lack of evidence?

Keep in mind that your job is not to express an opinion on the issue itself until the last couple of paragraphs in the body. The bulk of the essay

should be devoted to your analysis of the author’s presentation—deciding whether or not he or she has successfully achieved his or her purpose.

YOUR STUDY GUIDE
This study guide is intended to help you get more out of thematerial in your textbook. It’s not a substitute for readingyour text. The material for this

course is divided into eightlessons. Each lesson contains one or more assignments. Here’s a good procedure to follow:

1. Read the introduction to each assignment in thisstudy guide.

2. Read the required sections in the textbook, keeping yourstudy guide handy as you read. If the study guide refersto a specific figure in the

textbook, pay particular attentionto that item.

3. After you read the material in the textbook, return to thisstudy guide and use the assignment summaries to quizyourself on the material you’ve

read. Use the headingsin the outline to ask yourself questions.

4. When you feel confident that you understand the materialfor a particular assignment, complete the self-checkin this study guide and compare your

answers to those
given at the end of this study guide. Do not submit theself-checks for grading.
5. When you’ve completed all the assignments for aparticular lesson, review the material and completethe examination, quiz, and/or essay exam(s)

forthat lesson. Submit each written project for gradingand evaluation as soon as you complete it.

6. Complete each lesson in this manner.

A STUDY PLAN
This study guide contains your lesson assignments, quizzes, exams, and essay exams for the eight lessons you’ll completefor this course. The self-checks at

the end of each assignment
will help you assess your understanding of the materialso you’ll know whether you should move on to the nextassignment or review the material before

continuing.

Study pace. You have a study time limit for the semesterbut not one specific to Advanced Composition. You mustpace yourself wisely through the semester’s

courses to meetthe expiration date, allowing sufficient time for reading, prewriting, drafting, revising, and grading. Generally, youshould allot at least

two weeks for each lesson, with sometaking longer than that. You must complete each exam in the:

1. correct order.
1
The goal of this course is to help you grow as a writer bybuilding on your strengths and improving your weaknesseswith each assignment. Therefore, this

course emphasizes the
process approach to writing. Ideally, you’ll submit each exam, quiz, and prewriting and essay project in order after you’vereceived your evaluation of the

previous lesson, so that you
can apply the instructor’s feedback to your next writing project.

You must successfully complete the prewriting exams forLessons 6 and 7 before you submit the essay exams. Whileyou’re waiting for evaluations, you should

begin to work onthe next lesson’s assignments. If you have other coursesavailable for study, you may work on those materials whiletaking this English

course and submit any completed exams.

Organization. To keep your work for this course organized, create clearly labeled files in your word processing program.

We recommend you create a primary file folder named“Advanced Composition.” Within that folder, create separatefolders, such as “Self-Checks” and “Course

Notes.” Also create
a folder for each written exam (Lessons 5, 6, 7, and 8),where you’ll keep files of your research notes, rough drafts, and final draft. Establish a clear

naming system for each fileso you don’t confuse early drafts with your final version of anessay. When you reopen a rough draft, immediately click

Save As and add the date before further revision. That wayyou won’t lose anything you may delete but later wish youhad kept.

Required video lectures. There are three required videosfor the course posted on your student portal. Each videoincludes information that will help you to

complete yourassignments successfully.

Exam submissions.Use the following guidelines whensubmitting your exams:
nMultiple-choice quizzes and examinations: You’ll submityour answers for these exams online.
n Written essays and prewriting projects (Lessons 5, 6, 7,and 8): Unless the individual essay or project instructionsspecify otherwise, papers must be

typed doublespacedusing a standard, 12-point font (Times NewRoman or Calibri are good examples) and left justification.

Use 1-inch margins on all sides. Each page musthave a header in the proper format, containing studentname, student number with exam number, pagenumber,

mailing address, and email address.

Thesis: Focus for Audience and Purpose
The thesis establishes a clearly defined, analytic focus unique to the assigned topic, purpose,
and audience.
Development and Structure of Ideas in Relation to Thesis
Using applicable pattern(s) of development, the writer explores in depth the relationship between
thesis, assertion, and evidence. The opening engages the reader with the thesis. The body paragraphs
develop the thesis in a controlled fashion. The discussion closes with a sense of finality
reinforcing the thesis.

Incorporation of Source Material
Paraphrases, summaries, and direct quotations are aptly integrated with the writer’s style for the
purpose and audience. Sources are relevant and reliable.

Overall Organization of Writing
Transitional words and connective phrasing guide the reader through the relationships between
ideas. Each paragraph contains one idea that supports the thesis. The supporting sentences
connect to/develop the paragraph’s focus.

Word Choice and Presentation Style
The writer shows a consistent point of view, captivating the reader with skillful, precise language
for the purpose and audience. The essay is graceful and easy to read aloud with a natural, pleasant
rhythm through varied sentence length and structures.

MLA Citation
Using the MLA citation style, the writer accurately documents the required number of sources.

Conventions
According to standard written American English, the writer correctly applies spelling, punctuation
(including sentence structure), and grammar. These choices make the writing professional and
easy to understand. The writing meets the required length and overall submission format for
the assignment.

DISCUSSION BOARD

DISCUSSION BOARD INSTRUCTIONS
1. Post Requirements:
• For the weeks that we have discussion boards, you will post on Sunday night by midnight. Each post should be well-developed, well-

organized, and well-formatted, and free of writing errors. The post should demonstrate that you have truly mastered the concepts and readings

involved, and that you can apply them to a real-world policy issue. These posts will feed into Assignment #1 and #2, so take time to develop

them with adequate thought and reflection.
o Posts are generally from 400-500 words, though there is no word count requirement per se.
The forums have a “post first” requirement, which means you won’t see your classmates’ posts until you have posted.
2. Critique Requirements:
• By Tuesday night at midnight, go in and critique a peer’s post (preferably one that hasn’t received a critique yet). Post as a thread

to the peer’s original post.
o Considering the requirements of the assignment,
 tell your peer what they did well and what needs improvement (pretend you are a nice teacher).
The critiques should be well-developed, thorough, and thoughtful (these typically range around 200 words, though going over or under is fine–

no word count requirement here). No response to the critique is required, but is encouraged if your response will further understanding
The post set will be graded after the critiques are in. Late posts/critiques will not be graded.

Week 5 DB Post + Critique
From the “reality check” articles,
• How is policy really made at the state level?
• Did they use the policy analysis system proposed by Kraft & Furlong?
If state legislators aren’t using policy analysis,
• What other groups may be using it (e.g., which agencies or non-profits
o <Give examples where possible, and think through the policy actors you learned about in Kraft & Furlong>).
Critique the answer posted by one of your classmatesas assigned by Tuesday midnight Central Time.

Managerial Business Finance

Managerial Business Finance
Apix Printing, Inc. is a private, domestic United States printer of periodicals, newspaper inserts, and advertising materials that accompany

distributions of Sunday and weekday circulations of large metropolitan newspapers. The company, headed by chief executive officer (CEO) John Matthews,

generates $450 million in revenues from three product lines (periodicals, inserts, and advertising) and has long-term contracts with several large U.S.

retailers to produce weekly sales flyer inserts as well as metropolitan newspapers to produce Sunday magazine inserts and coupons. Its printing presses

are characterized by offset print technology and are capable of high-capacity output; in addition, the company recently migrated to water-soluble inks,

which considerably reduces manufacturing emissions.

The company’s executive team, employees, and above all, its vice president (VP) of Production, Luke Stewart, are committed to environmentally-

sustainable manufacturing practices. Presently, the only substrate Apix uses is paper, specifically newsprint of various weights. Trim and waste are

recycled in accordance with the company’s sustainability commitment. Manufacturing divisions are geographically aligned with customers’ locations to

minimize logistics costs and response time to customer requirements; however, a centralized corporate entity administers functions such as human

resources, information technology, and financial reporting. The VP of sales and administration, James Simeon, oversees administration and quality

compliance among the various divisions. There are presently five manufacturing divisions: Northwest, Southwest, Northeast, Southeast, and Midwest.

Currently, Apix is only marginally profitable, and as such, the chief financial officer (CFO), Mary Francis, has indicated that external financing will

be required to support a company expansion into a new segment of the printing sector: food packaging. This endeavor will require new investments in

equipment as well as substrate inventory; promotional costs will also increase. In addition, Timothy Russell, the new Audit Committee Chair, has

pointed out that the company’s compliance with the requirements of the Sarbanes-Oxley Act (SOX) will also cause administrative costs to increase.

Following the requirements is paramount to successfully file a registration statement and to issue equity to shareholders in an initial public offering

(IPO).

As the newly hired VP of finance, you report to the CFO. In this capacity, your responsibilities include preparation of financial statements,

comparative analysis and benchmarking to sector performance, and the assessment of new business investment opportunities to grow Apix’s expansion

endeavors in a challenging market.

revised literacy lesson plans

Spend at least 5 hours to complete this clinical field experience.
Observe the grade level and content area you chose in the Topic 2 assignment. After your observation, spend time with your mentor teacher to

review and revise the lessons you created in Topic 2. Have your mentor teacher critique your lessons and make suggestions for improvement

with the students in his or her classroom in mind. Plan to teach one of your literacy lessons (or one of your mentor teacher’s choice) to

these students by Topic 5.
Submit the two revised literacy lessons and a 250 word reflection on how literacy is taught in your mentor teacher’s classroom.
Prepare this assignment according to the APA guidelines found in the APA Style Guide, located in the Student Success Center. An abstract is

not required.
This assignment uses a rubric. Review the rubric prior to beginning the assignment to become familiar with the expectations for successful

completion.
please prepare the assignment like you were observing a teacher teaching reading in 8-11 grade with 275 words

keep in minds that the key to this assignment is the following

Submit the two revised literacy lessons and a 250 word reflection on how literacy is taught in your mentor teacher’s classroom.

Elasticity of Demand

The demand for goods varies based on the change in the price of the goods. For example, if oatmeal costs less than cereal, consumers would

buy more oatmeal for breakfast. However, the demand for inexpensive goods and services is not significantly affected by price

fluctuations. Similarly, the demand for essential goods that have no substitute on the market rarely changes with a change in price.
Write a 500 – to 600 – word paper that addresses the following:

Be sure to use several resources and examples to support your thinking for each one.
• Identify a product that is regularly consumed, such as soft drinks or a particular snack food.
• Describe how the demand (consumption) will be impacted by a 25% price increase.
• Conversely, how will the demand (consumption) change if the price drops by 25%?
• Is the demand for this product elastic or inelastic? Explain why.

Addition information:
In addition to fully answering the assignment’s questions, each Assignment will be evaluated for clarity of writing, critical analysis of

the issues, proper use of references to support the positions taken, and adherence to APA standards.

Marriage and Christian Vocation: Research Paper #1

The first research paper requirement in this course focuses on the basic theological and spiritual concepts and symbols operative in Christian marriage.

These concepts include:
• What is spirituality?
• Scriptural references relating to marriage.
• The principle of sacramentality
• The principle of mediation
• The principle of communion
• The unity of love of God, love of neighbor
Resources which may help you in your understanding of this material are two short videos by Richard McBrien. 1. Christian Spirituality 2.

Sacramentality

Suggested Research Sources:

Students are asked to offer an understanding of the above mentioned concepts and symbols of marriage. You are at liberty to format your five page paper

as you wish or, if you prefer, you can develop your work along the following lines:

• Create an Introduction. Your introduction should prepare the reader as to what is ahead. Start with a “thesis statement” such as: “This paper

will explore some of the basic spiritual and theological concepts underlying Christian marriage.” Then, inform the reader as to how you intend to

approach the material. E.g. This study will explore key Scripture references relating to marriage, discuss the spiritual dimension in marriage, offer

an understanding of the principles of sacramentality, mediation and communion. The important principle of “love of God, love of neighbor” will also be

addressed. You can also identify and name the symbols of marriage and their meanings you propose to examine. (Your introduction may be ½ of a page.

• The second page could be dedicated to a reflection on Spirituality. What is “Spirituality”? (offer a definition and cite your source). What is

your experience of Spirituality? You may wish to draw from several points advanced by Richard McBrien in his video on “Spirituality.” The author of our

textbook, David Thomas, talks about spirituality in marriage in Chapter Seven, What’s spiritual about marriage? In Christian Marriage, the new

challenge.

• It will be important in this study to offer an understanding of the Principle of Sacramentality. Offer a definition of Sacrament. (e.g. St.

Augustine). What is a scriptural reference which states that what God created is good?

• See Chapter Eight in our textbook by David Thomas. “What makes marriage a sacrament?” in Christian Marriage, the new challenge.

• What is the Principle of Mediation? Do you agree with this principle? How might you explain this Principle using the image of how wax relates

to a wick which has been lite? (how does the spirit relate to materiality?). At this point, it might be helpful to the reader to offer some

illustrations quoting a poem such as: “God’s Grandeur” by Gerard Manley Hopkins or “Canticle of the Sun” by St. Francis of Assisi.
How might the scripture image of being an “earthen vessel” be an example of this principle?
You may want to introduce the concept of, “…the unity of Love of God, Love of Neighbor” at this point. That is, given the Principles of Sacramentality

and Mediation, it is possible to assert that in loving one’s neighbor (a friend &/or spouse) a person is, at the same time, loving God since God

indwells in all creation.

• What is the Principle of Communion? How does the state of marriage give expression to this principle with the idea that, as the marriage rite

says, “the two shall become one”?

• Explain St. Paul’s statement about marriage in his Letter to the Ephesians (5: 31-32) as it applies to the Principle of Communion.

• You may want to introduce the idea of Symbols and the role of symbols in the marriage ceremony and in married life.

• You may wish to reprint one or two symbols (limit your reproduction size to no more than ½ page per symbol).

Offer a one paragraph summary of what concepts and ideas your paper covered and anything you may have learned from your study.

Here is how to access the Microsoft Word Help Page on using the APA, MLA, Chicago – automatically format bibliographies tool.

In Word 2010 for PC, after you have opened or created your document:
1. click on the File tab.
2. click on the Help link on the left side menu.
3. click on the Microsoft Office Help link at the top of the second column on the page. A popup box will appear.
4. type in the words “reference tool” into the search box.

Minor Project- Chose either an Arthropod Problem Report or Scrapbook

Minor Projects
. Papers and Scrapbooks will be checked for plagiarism. Make sure you cite your work.

Arthropod Problem Report
Purpose
To identify a current arthropod problem facing some aspect of society and to propose short and long term solutions to the problem. Some

websites you might want to explore:
http://www.invasivespeciesinfo.gov/animals/main.shtml
http://www.cdc.gov/zika/

Guidelines
1. Identification:Identify and describe the problem
a. Research current news (last 12 months) and government websites.
b. What is the problem? What are some of the possible reasons for its occurrence?
c. Consider the scale of the issue; can range from local community to global networks.
d. What are the short and long term consequences of the issue?

2. Contributions: What is currently being done to address this issue?
a. Discuss some of the newer and more innovative techniques for dealing with the problem that are currently being applied in the real

world. Be specific in describing these techniques. For example, if you are going to say that insecticide is used you need to describe the type

of insecticide and its mode of action.
b. Try to find at least several different tactics that are currently being used, or tested, by different people in different locations to

deal with the same problem.

3. Future outlooks
a. Based on what is currently being done to manage this problem, what are the long-term prospects for the situation? Will current

management techniques become obsolete? If so, why? Are current management techniques socially, environmentally and economically sustainable?

Why or why not? Are there non-target effects? Can you suggest a supplemental or alternative idea to address this issue?

Some Issue Areas
Invasive Species, Food Growth/Supply, Conservation, Climate Change, Human Health

Requirements
– Provide name, section, and major in top right of paper

Virtual Scrapbook Project

Electronic Entomology portfolio or Scrapbook — Created using PowerPoint or similar software. Up to 50 points possible. NOTE: Read this entire

section and then start immediately on this project….don’t leave it until later.

Purpose – to raise awareness of the roles and plights of arthropods in human culture:

1. Ubiquity of insects in human culture: The purpose of this assignment is to open your eyes to the prevalence of arthropods in the world

around you. Once you start looking and paying attention you will see just how much insects impact human society; you will see news related to

insect-borne diseases, decline of pollinators (this is not a trivial problem), insect impacts related to global climate change, and countless

other incidents where human culture and insect culture collide. You will be surprised just how frequently insect and arthropod images are used

in our culture—fabric, jewelry, home furnishings, media (movies, magazines, etc.), restaurant menus, Web site mascots, sports team mascots,

etc. You will also find journal articles about butterfly gardening, insects in water gardens, and various pests, pollinators and other

insects.

2. “Arthropod specism:” While we know that some arthropods are capable of transmitting disease or delivering a venomous sting, of the

million and a half species of insects, those that are dangerous to humans are a tiny fraction of a percent. The vast majority of them make

life on Earth possible for us, and provide us with important services, like pollination, decomposition, keeping pest insects in check, and so

on……Likewise, of the over 40,000 species of spiders, only a few are capable of harming humans, yet the reaction to a spider or an insect is

frequently one of horror or repulsion. When asked why an individual finds arthropods to be loathsome, the response will often be that “they

look disgusting.”

Peter Singer (1990), a well-published human rights advocate who has written on the history of civil rights movements based on race, gender, and

even biological classification. He warns
“We should always be wary of talking of ‘the last remaining form of discrimination.’ If we have learned anything from the liberation movements

we should have learned how difficult it is to be aware of latent prejudices in our attitudes toward certain groups….A liberation movement is a

demand for an end to prejudice and discrimination based on an arbitrary characteristic like race or sex (or having 8 legs or 6 legs). The aim

of this book is to lead you to make this mental switch in your attitudes and practices toward a very large group of beings: members of species

other than our own. I believe that our present attitudes to these beings are based on a long history of prejudice and arbitrary

discrimination. I argue that there can be no reason – except the selfish desire to preserve the privileges of the exploiting group….I ask you

to recognize that your attitudes to members of other species are a form of prejudice no less objectionable than prejudice about a person’s race

or sex.

Dr. Singer does not advocate that all species be treated the way we treat humans, but that we acknowledge that they are living beings that

differ from us in appearance. Rather than an immediate reaction of revulsion based simply on appearance, each animal should be evaluated on

characters other than their exterior countenance, and that, whenever possible, we should consider our viewpoints from perspectives other than

our own.

Scrapbook Items
You are expected to compile a “scrapbook” of items about insects or other arthropods. Your items must address the specified categories (see

below). These items can be journal articles, newspaper stories original poetry or artwork, advertisements, etc.which you will make into an

electronic album (using PowerPoint of the like). You must meet the required number of items for each category. Some of the things you find

will fit more than one category – it will be up to you to decide where they go and to explain your decision. For each of the 4 categories

below up to 1 item in each, may be non-insect arthropods.

Item Categories:
