The Marketing Scene

Subject: Marketing
1. American Intercontinental University publishes The Marketing Scene, an "online destination for professionals and consumers to discuss new ways of marketing, the effectiveness of advertising trends, specific ad campaigns, and the impact this information has on our society".

2. All of the articles are edited by marketing professionals to ensure quality information dissemination. Stories are added several times per week and cover a wide array of marketing topics. The stories are sorted by category:
• Controversy in Ads
• Lifestyle Campaigns
• Target Marketing
• The Global View
• Emotional Advertising
• Marketing the Economy

3.Read a few stories at the MarketingScene http://www.themarketingscene.com/index.php/discussions/ (this is a hyperlink to open in new window) to assist you with this assignment.

4. Ethics and social responsibility are extremely important in marketing today. Pick a product or service currently marketed that either 1) you believe is unethical or 2) demonstrates social responsibility. This is your chance to show what you have learned and it could help you become a published writer (really – your post could be selected to appear in the MarketingScene). This would look good on your resume.

5. Using the template provided, write a marketing article of about 250-350 words which includes a:
• Discussion of what you think to be the ethical implications or the social responsibility of the product’s or service’s introduction into the market place.
• Discussion of what you would do (or change) if you were the marketing manager in charge of that offering.
NOTE: Failure to write a marketing-focused article may result in a zero for the main post grade.

QUESTIONS
?
A) MASKS and PERSONAS: In his well-know song ?The Stranger,? Billy Joel declares:
?
Well, we all have some faces that we hide away forever
And we take them out and show ourselves when everyone has gone.
Some are satin, some are steel.
Some are silk and some are leather.
They’re the faces of a stranger–
But we love to try them on.
?
Please explain how the idea of masks/personas has become important for modern poets and musical artists. What masks/personas do they choose, and why might this matter? And what does this have to do with the theme of the ?stranger??
?
B) SPEAKING IN CODE: In his essay ?Negative Space,? Jay-Z states that ?Poets and hustlers play with language, because for them simple clarity can mean failure. They bend language, improvise, and invent new ways of speaking the truth? (3). Please take a look at some of our recent readings. Try to provide and explain examples of how writers often experiment with the language and forms they choose, and with ?strange? ways of ?speaking the truth.?
?

C) I KNOW WHY THE CAGED BIRD SINGS (AND MAYBE YOU DON?T): Maya Angelou?s well-known poem boldly emphasizes her claim that ?I know? why a bird sings of rage and captivity and freedom. Some of our other readings make similar claims in which an artist writes of how he or she can ?know? or ?speak? for those who are considered ?strangers.? Yet as we discussed in class, artists also raise the issue of ?credibility? (or ?authenticity? or ?credentials? or other terms). That is, certain artists or groups may resist these claims, and say in effect, ?You don?t really know me–and you can?t really know me.? Please select and explain some relevant examples.
D) PROUD TO BE STRANGE?: The famous film-maker Orson Wells once said that,
?A good artist should be isolated. If he isn’t isolated, something is wrong.? In several of our readings, artists or writers depict themselves as ?strangers?–and they often are not looking to be made a guest of honor in the ?village.? How do they refer to their own ?strangeness? from the ?village?–and what might be their attitude about it? With humility, rage, humor, irony, confusion, some personal declaration of independence?

*Readings I have done in class*
?Negative Space,? Jay-Z states that ?Poets and hustlers play with language, because for them simple clarity can mean failure. They bend language, improvise, and invent new ways of speaking the truth? (3).

Critically evaluate the suitability of enterprise systems and their alternatives in contemporary business environments.

Subject: Business

The assignment is in the form of individual assignment in pursuit of the following Learning Outcomes:

• Critically evaluate the suitability of enterprise systems and their alternatives in contemporary business environments.
• Synthesise a strategy for an enterprise system within a given business environment.
• Review as a member of a team a given problem posed by an enterprise systems case study, and as a team make meaningful recommendations towards its solution.

The assignment will be a maximum of 1500 words in length (i.e. in no cases will your submitted paper be longer than 1500 words, excluding references and annotated diagrams). It must also comply strictly with certain formatting guidelines that will be described later in this brief.

Ensure that you have read this entire document carefully so that you fully understand the requirements, which will now be explicated in the following sections.

Scenario
You are performing the role of a business analyst who has been tasked with preparing a detailed report for one of the sub areas (BPM, BI, DM or ERP). Your report must detail how the strategic direction of your company will be achieved in your sub area.. The strategic direction will draw on the group discussions and activities from the session.

BPM Business Process Management
BI Business Intelligence
DM Data Management
ES Enterprise Systems include SOA and SAP ECC (as used in ERPsim)

Remember the scenario you have been placed into. You are reporting your ideas in order to sell both yourselves as ES professionals and your solution to the shareholders.

Warning: Do not describe the technology itself, you are reporting to people with a similar level of knowledge as yourself who understand the subject. You are presenting a vision for the future.
Transactional data from your ERP Extended Manufacturing Game for a (3 x 20) 60 day period has been captured in SAP. A selection of this data has been extracted for this purpose into an MS Access Database provided, see Supporting Information section.

Assignment
The assignment will be a maximum of 1500 words in length (i.e. in no cases will your submitted paper be longer than 1500 words, excluding references and annotated diagrams). It must also comply strictly with certain formatting guidelines that will be described later in this brief.

It should be noted that you are not expected to solve every problem in every situation for the whole organisation. It is recommended that you focus on a narrow problem area and produce a deep and compressive piece of work.

ndividual Report Structure for Sub Area <Insert here>

Introduction
In this section you will provide an overview of your work. You should BRIEFLY explain who you are, a synopsis of the strategic direction and your sub area, how you have approached the problem and the key outcomes. The introduction should be concise, informative, and encourage the audience to pay attention to the remainder of the presentation. Ensure your name, team name and sub area appears clearly in the title.

Analysis
Demonstrate how the strategic direction can be achieved for your allocated sub area. Your organisation is risk averse but it must also be competitive therefore it is looking for a mix of reliable technologies and cutting edge solutions in order to deliver a real competitive advantage.

You are expected to take the data from the Extended Manufacturing Game and utilise it for the purpose of your analysis and discussion. This should take one of the following forms as per the individual sub area you have selected:

• BPM: Analyse the data using FCA and MS Excel in order to identify business rules and integrate these into a BPM solution.
• BI: Analyse the data using SAP BI and FCA in order to understand where decision making was poor or good and integrate this into a BI solution.
• DM: Analyse the data using SAP BI and FCA in order to understand what data is available, investigate what data would be useful to include in the future and integrate this into a DM solution.
• ERP: Analyse the data using SAP BI and MS Excel to understand how ERP could be developed in order to improve the user experience and performance of the organisation. Integrate this into an ERP solution.
Apply the tools available from the session in order to analysis the data in order to discover relationships, good or bad decisions, gaps etc. that can be addressed in order to support the strategic direction.

This analysis should include working prototypes and/or conceptual models representing the technologies being discussed. It should include detailed examples and evidence supporting how it works. It is not expected to be a robust software suite but a proof of concept.

As this is a discovery exercise your first attempt may not yield satisfactory results, therefore it is expected that you will have to undertake an iterative approach in your analysis of the data.

Solution: Detailed Strategic Direction for Sub Area <Insert here>

Clearly describe the solution being presented and implementation considerations.

Justification and Detailed Benefits Case
Compare the analysis methods applied and critically evaluate how efficient or capable they are. Justify the strategic direction and identify the key benefits and risks for the organisation

Conclusion
In your conclusion, bring together the threads of all the other sections and the clear message of your work. This is NOT simply a list of steps that you have taken to complete the assignment. An interesting and informative conclusion will set a positive light in which the rest of your work will be re-read. Therefore, as with any aspect of your work, do not rush this at the end.

Presentation Style
Adhere to the paper formatting guidelines. Credit will be given where you have demonstrated assisting others and referenced where others have had input and influenced your analysis methods. Note: this is an individual piece of work and all assignments must be different, this principle is to share ideas and problem solving during the analysis and not to jointly derive outcomes or conclusions.
Refer to the accompanying marking scheme for a breakdown of the marking.

The criteria for each of the above headings are explicated in the marking grid, which is further discussed later on below. A good coverage of these topics will have addressed all the learning outcomes (LO). Ensure that your submission reflects the proportion of marks given for each heading in the above table. You will gain the requisite knowledge for this assignment by your own self-directed research, enquiry, and critical thinking.

BPMN Flowchart: ERP Overview
A number of flowcharts are available electronically, including the one shown above in order to support and explain your answers. These represent the basic processes within an ERP system. The use of any documents supplied is optional however it should be noted that well annotated and graphical communicate methods are very useful when presenting your finding and arguments.

Data Sets
The data has been extracted into an MS Access database for easy manipulation. In order to assist you in this assignment a number of data preparation steps have been prepared.
The aim of providing these data sets is to reduce the amount of data preparation required and focus your efforts on the analysis. You are however free to modify the query or data if required. All parts of this assignment should use data from the ERP Extended Manufacturing Game.
Paper Formatting Guidelines
As your submissions will be to your professional high standards, the assignment must be formatted to certain strict guidelines. Please note that these requirements are not negotiable so any requests will be automatically refused and a nil mark will be awarded for any submission that does not comply accordingly.

Your paper thus must conform to the guidelines given by BCS Publishing (http://www.bcs.org/publishing/, navigate to ‘Want to be a writer?’ then read the ‘house style’ instructions and templates provided, noting that you are writing a manuscript rather than a whole book). You are advised to submit your paper as a Word .docx document. Ensure that you include your name! You do not need to add any affiliations. As explained earlier, the papers for this assignment has a strict word limit. After all, as Blaise Pascal once wrote, “I am writing you a long letter, because I haven’t got time to write you a short one.”

Greek & Romans

Greek & Romans

Subject: History
Greek and Roman Humanities

Required Textbook: Cultures and Values Volume 1, VCC Edition, Cunningham/Reich.

Valencia College Professor Baker
Reflection Paper Instructions
Miriam-Webster’s online dictionary defines reflection as, among other things, a thought, idea, or opinion formed or a remark made as a result of meditation; consideration of some subject matter, idea, or purpose.
So, with that definition in mind, here is your assignment.
In a well thought out paper of 500 words minimum, look back at the cultures that came before the ancient Greeks and discuss their impact on the beginnings of civilization. What is the relationship of these early cultures to each other and to the cultures that would eventually evolve into civilization as we know it?
There is a lot to chew on there. I wouldn’t attempt to discuss everything. I would choose one aspect of these early peoples and analyses that particular element in relation to later developments.
Each paper should have a thesis. “Early cultures were important to later development” is not a thesis. That’s a “Yeah. No kidding. Why are they important?” kind of statement. A thesis should be something interesting, something that can be disputed by others who don’t see things the way that you do. This is your reflection, not someone else’s. There is a PowerPoint on thesis writing in the Content section of your class shell. Please look at it before you begin. It will help you in your development of this important statement.
• Papers should be at least 500 words. They can be longer.
• Papers should not utilize outside resources. These are your thoughts based on the readings in the book.
• Papers should use parenthetical references in MLA format from the reading in the text to back and defend your ideas.
General Guidelines for MLA format:
• Type your paper on a computer and print it out on standard, white 8.5 x 11-inch paper.
• Double-space the text of your paper, and use a legible font (e.g. Times New Roman). Whatever font you choose, MLA recommends that the regular and italics type styles contrast enough that they are recognizable one from another. The font size should be 12 pt.
• Leave only one space after periods or other punctuation marks.
• Set the margins of your document to 1 inch on all sides.
• Indent the first line of paragraphs one half-inch from the left margin. MLA recommends that you use the Tab key as opposed to pushing the Space Bar five times.
• Create a header that numbers all pages consecutively in the upper right-hand corner, one-half inch from the top and flush with the right margin.
• Use italics throughout your essay for the titles of longer works and, only when absolutely necessary, providing emphasis.
Formatting the First Page of Your Paper:
• Do not make a title page for your paper.
• In the upper left-hand corner of the first page, list your name, your instructor’s name, the course, and the date. Again, be sure to use double-spaced text.
• Double space again and center the title. Do not underline, italicize, or place your title in quotation marks; write the title in Title Case (standard capitalization), not in all capital letters.
• Use quotation marks and/or italics when referring to other works in your title, just as you would in your text: Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas as Morality Play; Human Weariness in "After Apple Picking"
• Double space between the title and the first line of the text.
• Create a header in the upper right-hand corner that includes your last name, followed by a space with a page number; number all pages consecutively with Arabic numerals (1, 2, 3, 4, etc.), one-half inch from the top and flush with the right margin. (Note: Your instructor or other readers may ask that you omit last name/page number header on your first page. Always follow instructor guidelines.)
Tips:
• Do not use contractions (don’t, can’t, shouldn’t)
• Stay away from the pronoun I as much as possible. Discuss the characters, not yourself, your feelings or your thoughts. Your thoughts and feelings should shine through in your discussion of the topic.
• Do not make me part of your discussion by using the pronoun you. Avoid sentences like “You can see how much the Mesopotamians did.”
• Do not make unsubstantiated assumptions about anything. Do not start your paper out by saying something like “Life in ancient times was boring.”
• Everything you write in your paper should in some way be substantiating your thesis. Everything.
