Amazon CEO Sides With Media in Gawker Case
Jeff Bezos didn’t talk specifically about Peter Thiel, but he broadly defended free speech

RANCHO PALOS VERDES, Calif.— Amazon.com Inc. Chief Executive Jeff Bezos said he doesn’t support efforts by billionaires to undermine the media

by funding legal campaigns, part of a discussion about venture capitalist Peter Thiel backing lawsuits against Gawker Media.
Mr. Bezos, who is also the owner of the Washington Post newspaper, said public officials need a thick skin because they will always have

critics. “Move forward, it’s not worth losing any sleep over,” he said at the tech summit Code Conference here Tuesday. “If you’re doing

anything interesting, you’re going to have critics.”
Mr. Thiel, a co-founder of PayPal and a director at Facebook Inc., has drawn a mixed reaction in media and tech circles for providing about $10

million to finance former wrestler Hulk Hogan ’s invasion-of-privacy lawsuit against Gawker. Mr. Thiel has said he backed the lawsuit by Terry

Bollea, who uses the professional wrestling name Hulk Hogan, because he believes Gawker violates the privacy of people who can’t easily fight

back.

Mr. Bezos didn’t talk specifically about Gawker, but he broadly defended the media and free speech, saying “beautiful speech

doesn’t need protections. It’s ugly speech that needs protection.” When asked about Mr. Thiel’s effort, Mr. Bezos evoked an old saying,

attributing it to Confucius: “Seek revenge and you shall dig two graves—one for yourself.”
Separately, Mr. Bezos said the online retailer now delivers about 50% of its packages directly to customers’ homes in the U.K. and plans to keep

ramping up such delivery in the U.S.
Earlier

“We have to have capacity for peak” delivery times, he said. “We’ve had to take over a lot of last mile delivery in the U.K.” as the Royal Mail

couldn’t keep up.
Mr. Bezos said Amazon is growing its shipping business with United Parcel Service Inc. and the U.S. Postal Service, but the company still needs

to supplement its own merchandise deliveries. He denied that he is striving to put other delivery companies out of business.

Amazon is putting more of its own trucks on the road to make deliveries while opening new warehouses close to urban centers to help limit its

rising shipping costs. Delivery trucks with the familiar Amazon “a” logo are more commonplace in the U.S., and the company is leasing planes to

ferry merchandise to warehouses more quickly and inexpensively.
In the wide-ranging conversation, Mr. Bezos said the company has 1,000 people working on software and hardware related to its Echo and Alexa

virtual assistant service. Mr. Bezos said he is “absolutely” committed to the technology and expects it to be central to the future of Amazon

and other companies over the next two decades.
The Seattle online retailer faces new competition for its Echo device after Alphabet Inc. said earlier this month it is plans a similar service

called Google Home. Apple Inc. too may be working on a comparable device, according to recent reports.

Merger and Unit Integration Issues

Merger and Unit Integration Issues
As a leader/manager, one circumstance you may encounter is the necessity to integrate or merge two organizational units. This can be a stressful period

which, if not properly managed, can cause a good deal of tension and/or conflict, often leading to decreased organizational performance.
Consider that senior management has dictated that your unit will merge with another manager’s unit over the next three months. You will be the leader of

the newly merged group. The previous manager will remain on your staff. Senior management has asked you to submit a merger plan. (If you have previously

been involved in an actual unit merger, please share the organizational dynamics you experienced as well as any lessons learned.)

In describing three key elements of your merger plan, explain the sources of power that will be available to you and upon which you will draw to help

achieve a successful merger

The case of Turkey

The case of Turkey: Using Neoliberalism and Gramsci’s concept of Hegemony to analyze the changes in Turkey’s education

*Key Terms: Neoliberalism, marketization and hegemony.
Power for the ruling classes, comes not from force but ideological manipulation and control. Schools and education play a major role in perpetuating this hegemony, reinforcing the social norms of dominance and obedience. In many ways the Turkey’s comprehensive system had its roots in Gramsci.
Each and every action taken by state in the realm of education do affect the whole society. Since 2002, with the coming of conservative democrats to power, the assessment system, the contents of the lessons and many other things regarding national education have passed through very serious reforms but these haven’t brought about a real change. One of the clear indicator of this is PISA. Results show clearly that Turkish education produces less successful students compared to many OECD countries, and even below the average (PISA 2012).
For about 5 years, we have been witnessing a dramatic shift in the proportions of different types of schools in Turkey. The numbers of private schools as well as imam hatip schools (a type of vocational school which has more “Islamic” curricula) are on the rise. From my point of view, this shift is being done mainly for two reasons.
First, educational system is in constant change, which is in accordance with demand of ruling party to create a new society that will accept the ideology of them voluntarily. As Gramsci stated before: “Every relationship of ‘hegemony’ is necessarily an educational relationship and occurs not only within a nation, between the various forces of which the nation is composed, but in the international and world- wide field, between complexes of national and continental civilisations.” (Gramsci, 1971: 666)
Secondly, to meet the needs of neoliberal market . In my paper, I will try to analyze the change in the curriculas, numbers of the schools and so on by giving references to both Gramscian terminology as well as the criticals of neoliberal approach.

Sandel's THE MORAL LIMITS OF MARKETS

Use the uploaded file as source and answer these questions. Sandel explains that over the last few decades a market and consumer logic has

come to penetrate every area of contemporary social and political life; accordingly, what is the meaning of the distinction he makes

between a ‘market economy’ versus a ‘market society’? Why does Sandel think that by making markets the ultimate arbiter of values in

society, our capacity for a genuine public attitude and decision-making is corrupted? Use examples from the specific chapter you read to

underline why he takes a purely private consumer attitude to social and political decision-making to be destructive of public life. Do you

agree with Sandel that there are things money should not be able to buy? Would you agree that our societies, by making money the measure of

all things, are increasingly corrupted? If so, what areas of life do you think should be decided upon primarily through public discourse

rather than private consumption? If you disagree with Sandel, how would you counter his arguments? Can the market bring us to the public

good by itself, or can it do its job in a socially beneficial manner only within a public understanding of the good, defined without it?

Diagram of a Business Process, Business Object, and Business Service

For this week’s course project assignment, consider the concepts that you will use to combine both ERP systems and workflow management

systems.
You need to include an example of the business process and explain the goals of the business in long term, and full functionality of the

ERP systems and the objectives.
The three bullets below are what should be in your diagram:
• Business process: specification of a sequence of activities leading to a goal. You can pick any sequence of activities related to

the current problem in the company and create a diagram showing your solution to that piece of the problem.
• Business object: representation in an IT system of an entity in the business domain. (From a business standpoint, it is a single

object with an interface, although internally it can consist of multiple objects that contain the implementation of the methods in the

interface of the business object. The business objects are bundled in larger components that are quite independent from each other and that

can be configured relatively independently. When such components are put together they should also be able to work together seamlessly.)
• Business service: representation of a piece of functionality, an algorithm, or a user task (a service should include

characteristics and constrains. The generic business services, developed in either the workflow or the ERP part use the concepts from the

generic process model to express their functionality. Both are able to use those services).
You can use any type of tool you want (e.g., Visio or Word).
Here is an example of a diagram:

Basic overview or assignment, continuation of above overview:
Business process, sequence of activities leading to a goal, anything dealing with the problem of customers wanting to see their data in a

more strategic format, customers unable to et to purchase history and financial information currently. Create your own.
Business object, IT system, single object, your erp system, what IT perspective to capture data.
Business service, representation of a piece of functionality, algorithm or user task

Runa Uturuncu Current Background and Problem:
Background:
Runa UturuncuLLC, has a base in the U.S. and Europe (Switzerland, the Netherlands, and Gibraltar). This company is in the computer parts

business and it has three lines of focus: Networking parts, Processors (CPU), and Graphic Cards, but has an interest in providing/selling

all parts in the computer industry. Globally, it has more than 2000 employees. This company is working with SAP-ERP systems that promote

and integrate business processes. The organization produces their own version of a CPU and a Gaming Graphic Card. Runa Uturuncu LLC ,

sells all of its products to specific dealers around the world. The organization has manufacturing in the United States, Switzerland,

Gibraltar, and Netherlands. You will need to explain the business process and workflow management in SAP-ERP. You also need to come up with

a solution to the following problem and provide conclusions and recommendations.
Problem
The company processes purchase orders for computer hardware, and there are many complex problems involved in this. The purchase order (PO)

document is complex and contains many challenges for both the company and the customer. The purchase order (PO) may contain requests for

other hardware components (e.g., storage devices, networking equipment, etc.). Customers want a coherent view of their purchase order’s

progress, a reasonable delivery schedule (the machines should not arrive one-at-a-time), alerts, etc. The company’s profitability requires

efficient coordination, delivery, and in some cases assembly of components. The processing of the PO may require business rules to validate

configurations or compute volume discounts. The process may call for numerical algorithms to optimize production and shipping schedules. In

addition, there are many non-integrated applications, different views and forms of business artifacts (PO, product descriptions), and

manual tasks.
The business process typically involves multiple enterprise sites and business units (for example, server assembly, microelectronics,

financing), and external partners.
