ASSIGNMENT TASK – AT&T Inc. Assignment tasks Select a company (AT&T) listed on an internationally recognised and well established Stock Exchange .

Discuss how successful the company has been at delivering value to its shareholders over the past 5 years.

Complete an EVA analysis of your company for the last 5 years. Clearly show your work rather than using final EVA numbers from another source.

Analyse the Total Shareholder Return (TSR) of the company for the past 5 years, including any key events and compare with a similar company or appropriate benchmark. Undertake a current valuation of the equity in this company, using the following methods:

 Net Asset Value.

 Comparable Ratios (e.g. P/E, P/B, EV/EBITDA). You will need to look at both past results and comparable firms to analyse and justify an appropriate valuation. Note that simply multiplying the current ratio by the recent earnings (or book value or EBITDA) is not sufficient.

 Discounted Free Cash Flow. You will need to forecast each component of free cash flow (e.g. Sales, costs, capex, etc.) for at least 5 years of forecast cash flows and estimate a terminal value, and then discount . Make sure to justify all of your assumptions. You can find information to support your forecasts from sources including the MD&A section of the company’s annual report (or its competitors), news stories, industry trade publications and government or think tank studies on the industry. Videos on how to estimate cost of capital and how to forecast free cash flow can be found in Blackboard under the appropriate Unit. Attempt to reconcile any differences in value that you obtain by using these different methods and state (with reasons) what value you think is correct for the company. You must clearly explain all of your assumptions used in the valuations.

Choice of company; Choose a listed company on a major stock exchange (e.g. London, New York, Tokyo, Mumbai) for which you can access the share price data over the past 5 years. Large companies will provide financial data on the websites, often under a section titled ‘investors’. More information on choosing an appropriate company can be found in the formative assessments.

Guidelines The report should include:

 a key point summary of your conclusions

 graphical illustration, where appropriate

 a bibliography of sources of information used and references to texts or other material drawn upon. You should follow Harvard referencing guidelines

 detailed tables, extracts or copies of financial information should be placed in the appendices if they are necessary to understand your report. You should only include appendices if you refer to them in the body of the report. You do not need to include the entire financial statements.

 You should not embed spreadsheets in the Word document as they will not be seen by the marker. You should only copy those tables which are important for the reader to understand your work. Introduction to the Modul Financial data available includes the Financial Analysis Made Easy database maintained in the School of Management library. Other special reports, for example, Company Focus, are available from the Financial Times Share Service, or brokers’ circulars issued from time to time by the broking arm of numerous finance houses. Data can also be found online from the company websites, yahoo.com, Bloomberg.com and other internet sources.

A Discussion based on the video “And the Band Played On”

Discussion

The following discussion  is based on the video “And the Band Played On”.

1-2 paragraphs
After watching the video, respond to the following:
•  Do you think that the history of the disease AIDS would be different if the initial population affected had been a group other than gay men, e.g. children or heterosexual women?
•  The gay men in the video initially opposed the closing of the bath houses even though there was strong evidence that the disease was being spread through sexual contact. Why do you think they took this stand?
•  Why do you think it was so difficult to get the healthcare community to agree to testing blood for evidence of HIV?
Disscussion two
1. “Stress management” is a term that we often hear, accompanied by programs that promise to teach techniques for proactively avoiding stress as well as coping skills for dealing with situations that cause stress. Some people take advantage of stress management programs while others don’t see the value in them. Describe why an individual might choose to learn how to better manage stress from the perspectives of the Health Belief Model and the Theory of Reasoned Action.
2. What does health locus of control contribute to our perceptions of the causes of stress? Discuss how an individual’s perceived locus of control contributes to their experience of stress.
3. Stress is increasingly being discussed in terms of the role it plays in illness. What do you see as the benefit and the risks of discussing stress and its relationship to illness? Consider how stress is diagnosed and treated from the perspective of medicalization.

A Business Case Analysis based on Ethical Theories.

Instructions

This is a case  involving fictional characters and companies. However, it draws on a variety of actual cases. Imagine yourself in the position of an ethics analyst who is asked to go work for the company and draft a report analysing the situations, identifying the main moral wrongdoings, justifying the conclusions why they are wrong, and providing management and policy advice on how the company should deal with these problems in the future.

In writing the report, identify the main issues and discuss each separately. There are four to six distinct situations (e.g. sexual harassment issue or health and safety issue)—its up to you to identify them correctly and analyze them. One or one and a half single-spaced pages per issue should be sufficient, but it can be a bit more or a bit less depending on the complexity of the issue. Although you have some freedom in how you can approach the analysis, I suggest that each section contains the following parts:

Identify the problem and assess it. This is a good place to ask yourself this question—where does this situation fit as far as legal and ethical responsibilities are concerned? For example, if there (hypothetically) were a workplace safety issue where the employer ignores the dangers to employees and their objections, you would evaluate the actions of employers and pass a judgement on whether and why they were wrong as far as regulations and expectations of responsibility are concerned. If there were a sexual harassment situation, you could determine what kind discrimination it was (quid pro quo or poisoned environment) and whether the actions of the individuals amount to sexual harassment. Here you could appeal to legislation or policy guides, if relevant, uploaded to Moodle (i.e. Health and Safety Guides or Sexual Harassment guidelines).
Justify your moral assessment in a normative theory (theories) we have discussed in class (this could be deontological rights approach; utilitarian analysis or other moral standards discussed.
If in the section above you passed a moral judgement, in this section you need to ground the moral judgements in moral principles and ultimately a moral standard. To ground your analysis of the situation, keep these questions in mind:

Who is harmed by the activity?

How serious is the harm?

Who is responsible for the harm?

Does it violate essential human interests or moral rights?

Can this harm be morally justified by conflicting moral values?

What are the real motivations of the parties involved (e.g. perpetrators and critics)?

Appealing to this normative foundation should justify your analysis and help to clarify moral values involved. You need to show how moral obligations identified in a) follow from the moral theories we have covered in class.

In this section, you should think about the problem from a managerial perspective—suggest policy changes to ensure that these problems do not arise. But do not spend too much time on this section: it should be relatively short.

THE CASK OF AMONTILLADO

Do you think the use of a first-person point of view makes you more sympathetic toward Montresor than you would be if this story were told by a third-person narrator? Why or why not?
