Rhetoric Communications

Choose four questions; each should take up approximately 1/4 of the 9 page paper. (Must meet word count.) If any sources are used, but cite them properly and have works cited, which doesn’t count as part of word count total. Artifacts (URLs) have been provided for the questions. If you have any trouble with them, contact me.

1. Dramatism is not only a story-based criticism but an inclusive theory of human communication. Using Reece Witherspoon’s recent attempt at damage control, explain the hierarchies in conflict, what makes the message effective/ineffective (creates identification), how she spotlights her motive (pentad) and her choice of purification/transcendence:

2. Ideology critics argue that cultural practices create & reflect reality; artifacts are battlegrounds for meaning; and multiple patterns of belief exist in all cultures but some come to dominate. Using your knowledge of this umbrella theory, analyze the Chris Christie tweet:

3. How is the national “women in combat” debate impacting our concept of gender equality? (If you aren’t following the debate, it’s easy to google)

4. The goal of generic criticism is to find commonalities in rhetorical patterns across recurring situations, to see similarities in situations and rhetors’ responses to them. Using the artifacts on SacCT (and any others you think appropriate), what steps would you take to see if a generic class could be formed around the rhetoric of heroism. Provide a few examples of the situational requirements and the substantive and stylistic characteristics you might consider as potential rules for this genre. http://www.rawstory.com/rs/2013/05/08/charles-ramsey-take-that-reward-and-give-it-to-the-kidnap-victims/

5. One of the biggest challenges facing a rhetor is creating internal credibility – especially when the issue is gender-sensitive. Review the opinion editorial “Real beauty, really Dove?” Provide examples of how the rhetor tried to demonstrate her character, competence/intelligence, goodwill and power to her readers. Discuss the effectiveness of those efforts:

6. Narrative criticism studies a rhetor’s response to a rhetorical situation through the creation of a story full of characters, their deeds and the setting where deeds take place. The audience becomes an active participant in the creation of these story-based messages. According to an Advertising Age survey of professionals, the top 2013 Super Bowl commercial was “Brotherhood” by Budweiser. Using examples from the video, describe how the story functions as a guide to belief and behavior: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o2prAccclXs

7. Last Thanksgiving, “Gangnam Style” officially became the most-viewed video in YouTube history, ousting the Bieb’s “Baby” from the top spot. By Christmas, it surpassed a billion views and today it is over 1.5 billion. As a critic, you must have some explanation for this success. What research question might lead us to advance persuasion theory? What method would provide the best answer? Remember to justify your selections:

8. We have discussed how visual techniques and hybrid texts are employed to convey meaning and establish a point of view. Using the concepts of visual criticism, argue how this magazine cover functions as persuasion: http://www.time.com/time/covers/0,16641,20130211,00.html
