UNIT SIX INTRODUCTION
In this unit, we will focus on the benefits of series preaching – the friend of the busy pastor. The Bible is replete with examples of
sequential issues that could serve as the biblical foundation for a sermon series. In fact, you may just want to use the text above to serve as
your next 8 part preaching series!
UNIT SIX OUTCOMES
Upon completion of this unit you should be able to:
1. Identify the benefits of preaching in series.

UNIT SIX ASSIGNMENTS
6.1 TEXT/MEDIA: TEXTBOOK
INTRODUCTION AND ALIGNMENT
The course text goes to some length, in several chapters, to highlight characteristics of series preaching. This assignment aligns with the
course in that it helps the student not only to examine the characteristics of series preaching, but to also apply them as well in one’s own
preaching ministry.
Upon completion of this assignment you should be able to:
• Identify the benefits of preaching in series.
RESOURCES
Textbook: The Art and Craft of Biblical Preaching
BACKGROUND INFORMATION
Series preaching has long been favored by both expository and topical preachers. A few primary benefits of series preaching are:
• It gives the preacher time to stay in a book of the Bible, or on a topic, and then be able to adequately deal with the material for some time.
• It gives the audience time to stay in a book, or on a topic, as well. So often, laypeople do not stay long enough in one place in their
reading of the Word to serve them well. Series preaching exposes them to thought that has been allowed to germinate, grow root, and bear fruit.
• Series preaching, once guided by the Holy Spirit to the content, gives the preacher a nearly inexhaustible supply of sermon material. The
Gospel communicator can plan months, or even years in advance.
INSTRUCTIONS
1.Read the textbook, chapters- 118, 119, 120, 165, 184, 193.

6.4 UNIT ASSIGNMENT: EXERCISE
INTRODUCTION AND ALIGNMENT
This exercise is intended to lead you to examine either a current or late preacher, who in your opinion, is modeling series preaching well. This
aligns with the course in that one of the many techniques the emerging preacher will use is an extended series of messages dealing with a book
of the Bible, an emerging cultural phenomenon, or perhaps even a series on the major doctrines of the Bible.
Upon completion of this assignment you should be able to:
Examine a late or contemporary preacher who modeled series preaching.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION
Dr. Richard D. Dobbins, Founder of EMERGE Ministries in Akron, OH, has said many times that “modeling is the strongest form of teaching.”
Biblical preachers tend to produce more of their own kind. When an emerging preacher hears the Word (content) rightly divided (delivery) and
then delivered under the influence of the Holy Spirit (unction), then he/she wants to do the same.
No doubt, as you are reading this unit, you are doing so via either a laptop or desktop computer. It is like literally having a window onto the
entire world of information. Computers and the Internet have democratized knowledge, truly making it accessible to anyone.
Take advantage of this wonderful instrument you are using, and explore the world of series preaching. You will want to enter “series preaching”
into a search engine of your choice, and then see where it leads you. After some research, hone in on someone you believe is doing series
preaching well. Alternatively, search may lead to your own pastor, or someone else in your own locale who is doing series preaching well. As you
examine them, ask the following questions:
• Has their series started in the text and then looked out to culture, or has their series started in culture and looked back into the text?
• How many sermons have they settled on in their series, and ins far as you can tell, why this number?
• What instigated this series- in other words, why did they choose this particular series?
• Insofar as you can tell, what impact has this series had on the viewers?
• If this were your series, how might you approach it differently?
INSTRUCTIONS
1. In reviewing the content of this unit, prepare a Word document of no less than 250 words, and respond to the following five questions:
a. Has their series started in the text and then looked out to culture, or has their series started in culture and looked back into the text?
b. How many sermons have they settled on in their series, and ins far as you can tell, why this number?
c. What instigated this series- in other words, why did they choose this particular series?
d. Insofar as you can tell, what impact has this series had on the viewers?
e. If this were your series, how might you approach it differently?
2. Submit in Word document.
