M3 Discussion A: Compare and Contrast Individual Counseling Methods

Select and view at least one of the four videos below. Each video demonstrates a specific counseling/therapy approach with an adult who has an

addictive or substance use disorder. Please make sure you select a video that has not already been discussed by the majority of the class.

Once you have selected your video, you will want to take notes as you watch in preparation for the discussion questions. Each video can be watched in

under an hour.

The following links will take you to the different videos from the series Brief Therapy for Addictions (Allyn & Bacon, 2000) or a fourth video on

Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy for Addictions with Albert Ellis. When you click the link to a video, (ESC log-in required – use your ESC Moodle log

in) it should begin automatically. The videos will start from the beginning, so to bypass the “pre-session commentary”, go to the right of the video

screen, under “Chapters”, and click on “Psychotherapy Session or “Therapy Session”. You can then just focus on viewing the specific session, however it

is recommended that you view the pre/post session discussion for the video you selected.

Be sure to expand your horizon and view a video of a counseling method you are not familiar with and/or have not previously used.

approach).
What was particularly effective about this counseling approach? What might be some limitations of this approach?

Would your chosen method be more effective, less effective, or equally effective as the SOC approach? Explain your reasons?
Finally read the main posts of two or more classmates who selected a different counseling approach, then comment on what was similar and what was
