There are calls for age-based rationing of health care as proposed by Callahan in chapter 10 of the Tong Text (2007). In the same chapter, Kass talks about the notion that "death helps us to be serious about life." He also notes that "Mortality makes life matter" (p. 255).
Tong asserts that perhaps Kass is right: "Immortality may not be all that is is cracked up to be. Death may be a friend, after all" (p. 253).
Consider some of the social, economic and political forces that come to bear on older adults’ well being, and answer the following:
If it were up to you, how would you reform Medicare and Medicaid to be more responsive to the long term health care needs of the Baby Boomer Generation?
Will the Affordable Health Care Act provide a system that can accommodate the needs of aging Americans? Support your position, remembering to maintain an academic focus on the issues.
