Your response must not exceed 500 words and must be double-spaced. Use a word processing program with a word count feature (e.g. GoogleDocs, Microsoft Word, etc.) to write your response and ensure it does not exceed the 500-word limit.

Submit your response in the Canvas assignment as a file upload before the assignment deadline of Monday at 5pm. The only acceptable file formats are doc, docx and pdf. No late assignments will be accepted (see policy on Syllabus).

You do not need to do additional research in order to answer the question, and you should not expect that citing additional sources will necessarily improve your grade. However, if you draw on or cite any sources, including text from class slideshows and assigned readings, you must follow the citation guidelines that are detailed in the Writing Assignments Info page.

Please note that there is not usually a single correct answer to these questions, but instead a range of possible ideas you might articulate in your response. The Rubric provided in this assignment is what will be used to evaluate your answer.

The first video features Chris Thile playing in a more traditional “bluegrass” style, while the third video shows Thile playing a piece by Bach (originally written for violin) in a more “classical” style. Both videos show the same musician on the same instrument, but playing in two different styles or “genres.” How do you hear his playing style differ between the two videos? Are there elements you can identify that make each of these videos sound different? What characteristics of the sound might lead you to say that each piece belongs to a certain kind of genre?
Here are some additional questions you might consider to guide your response to the main questions above:
Is the pulse more consistent in one playing style than the other?
Does one have a recognizable form to you? Can you identify a recurring theme or melody?
How does each make you feel? Does one make you want to move more, does one feel like it has a different kind of emotional resonance?
