Report on ethical consumerism

Written Report
Write an analytical business report on what ethical consumerism means for businesses.
Choose a company and explain and analyse how they operate ethically. This must take into account the ethics and values of the company you choose to focus on. The report must be written in business report format and include the following six numbered sections:
• An executive summary which gives a brief overview of the argument in your report including key findings and conclusions.
• A contents page which lists the sections and the page numbers.
• An introduction which gives an overview of the structure of your report.
• A brief overview and analysis of ethical consumerism, identifying the examples of some of the products which fall into the ethical category. You must include a definition of ethical consumerism and arguments as to why it is a good strategy for businesses to adopt.
• A detailed review of one company claiming to operate ethically. Discuss the approaches they have used to become a more socially conscious business, linking this with their ethics and values.
• The results of a short opinion survey on what influences consumer buying behaviour, carried out by you from a small sample of 10-15 students at GSM London. You need to conduct primary research for this section.
• A conclusion which includes critical evaluation of ethical consumerism based on the evidence that you have gathered both from your primary and secondary research, focusing on the company you have chosen for detailed review.
• Recommendations as to how your company could become more ethical.
• You must include a references list after the main body of the report. Remember to use Harvard referencing where appropriate.
• A copy of your opinion survey should be included in an appendix.

A Business Case Analysis based on Ethical Theories.

Instructions

This is a case  involving fictional characters and companies. However, it draws on a variety of actual cases. Imagine yourself in the position of an ethics analyst who is asked to go work for the company and draft a report analysing the situations, identifying the main moral wrongdoings, justifying the conclusions why they are wrong, and providing management and policy advice on how the company should deal with these problems in the future.

In writing the report, identify the main issues and discuss each separately. There are four to six distinct situations (e.g. sexual harassment issue or health and safety issue)—its up to you to identify them correctly and analyze them. One or one and a half single-spaced pages per issue should be sufficient, but it can be a bit more or a bit less depending on the complexity of the issue. Although you have some freedom in how you can approach the analysis, I suggest that each section contains the following parts:

Identify the problem and assess it. This is a good place to ask yourself this question—where does this situation fit as far as legal and ethical responsibilities are concerned? For example, if there (hypothetically) were a workplace safety issue where the employer ignores the dangers to employees and their objections, you would evaluate the actions of employers and pass a judgement on whether and why they were wrong as far as regulations and expectations of responsibility are concerned. If there were a sexual harassment situation, you could determine what kind discrimination it was (quid pro quo or poisoned environment) and whether the actions of the individuals amount to sexual harassment. Here you could appeal to legislation or policy guides, if relevant, uploaded to Moodle (i.e. Health and Safety Guides or Sexual Harassment guidelines).
Justify your moral assessment in a normative theory (theories) we have discussed in class (this could be deontological rights approach; utilitarian analysis or other moral standards discussed.
If in the section above you passed a moral judgement, in this section you need to ground the moral judgements in moral principles and ultimately a moral standard. To ground your analysis of the situation, keep these questions in mind:

Who is harmed by the activity?

How serious is the harm?

Who is responsible for the harm?

Does it violate essential human interests or moral rights?

Can this harm be morally justified by conflicting moral values?

What are the real motivations of the parties involved (e.g. perpetrators and critics)?

Appealing to this normative foundation should justify your analysis and help to clarify moral values involved. You need to show how moral obligations identified in a) follow from the moral theories we have covered in class.

In this section, you should think about the problem from a managerial perspective—suggest policy changes to ensure that these problems do not arise. But do not spend too much time on this section: it should be relatively short.

The Legal and Ethical Issues Surrounding a Medical Setting

Choose a topic, begin research, and draft a thesis for your paper.

Focus on finding at least two peer-reviewed articles related to your topic.
Use the WCU library to find these articles.

•First, select a topic with both legal and ethical implications faced by professionals in the healthcare setting.

Discuss the multitude of legal viewpoints, ethical issues, and issues of inter-professionalism related to your topic.

Discuss how values, ethics, and sense of inter-professionalism may shape how the topic is interpreted, analyzed, and communicated in legal and ethical terms.

◦For example, you can analyze Roe v. Wade (the law that legalized abortion) and its impact on the practice of obstetrics and gynecology over time.

◦Alternately, you could discuss the legal and ethical issues surrounding The End of Life Option (physician-assisted suicide) law that was recently passed in California and its impact on hospitals.

◦You could even discuss the need for a strong Code of Ethics in every medical business setting or the need for interprofessional education and how it can improve the ethics of a medical setting.

• Once you have chosen your topic, conduct research to find at least two peer-reviewed articles related to your topic and summarize the findings in those two articles. Then, formulate a thesis for your paper.

Compose a 2–3 page paper that presents your thesis and summarizes your supporting articles. In your paper, analyze why these article support or refute your topic. Compose your paper in APA format with a title page, introduction, headings, conclusion, and reference section.

Case Example #1

You are making a home visit to a patient who was discharged after having a stroke and falling. This fall caused a hip fracture and the patient still has significant pain, but you believe that he should begin more ambulation in his home. You review the level of narcotic pain medication that has been charted as given several times a day by one of the visiting nurses. As you begin your assessment, the patient complains of excessive pain and wishes to stop the ambulation exercises you are doing with him. You determine that he is having significant pain and ask him if he thinks that he needs more medicine. He says, “I haven’t taken any medicine since last week except Tylenol. That’s all the nurse says I need.” By your assessment, the patient is clear, aware, and not forgetful. You then examine all his medication and find that even though prescribed, there are no narcotics, only Tylenol.

Case Example #2

You work closely with several people at your small clinic and have started meeting socially to have a few drinks. You notice one of your fellow nurses, Brad, tends to drink more than the rest of the group. He lives nearby, walks home, and never seems abusive, so you never mention it until one day you return from lunch and you see Brad leaving a bar. In the clinic, you return a patient record to Brad and you smell liquor on his breath. He takes the record, smiles and says, “Thanks, I needed this record. I’m seeing her in ten minutes.”

What concerns do you have as you return to your desk? The quality of Brad’s patient care has never been questioned and patients always compliment him. What professional obligations do you have and how should they be carried out?

Analysis Questions

1. What is your obligation to report each situation to your superior?

2. How quickly must the nurse act in reporting each situation?

3. How does loyalty to your co-worker (Brad) factor into your decision to act?

4. What other factors weaken the willingness of a nurse to confront behaviors (of others) that present immediate risk of harm to patients?
