An Econometric Study of the Earnings of a Group of Immigrants in a Canadian Province using Microdata from the 2011 National Household SurveyAn Econometric Study of the Earnings of a Group of Immigrants in a Canadian Province using Microdata

Important to read before you start,
Hi, the course: Labour economics,
This assignment ask me to do the Stata output with 2011 national household survey, and based on Stata output to get mean value table (table 1) & regression tables (table 2,3,4), and then composed 1500-2000 essay on it, the detailed requirement is shown in “assignment 2” file.

1. prof send us the example paper (similar structure to this one) I have already upload it in attached file, you can take a look, it will be helpful for the essay structure.
2. In this paper, prof ask edit the stata output to present it in a format
that is suitable for a table in a research paper. I have already got the stata output, and “do-file” if you need it, I can scan the stata output for you which i
printed.
3. For my research paper, I choose Southeast Asia immigrants (mainly from Vietnam) in Quebec. And compare to other immigrants and Canadian born, I go to prof office hour ask him about paper ideas, he says: focus on Vietnam refugees came Canada during 1975-1976, and research more sources related to this topic to compose whole essay.
4. for the table 1, is not a regression table, it is a mean value table.
What you can write:
eg: for wage variable, the people from southeast asia get less than Canadian born people
eg: for age: the mean age for southeast Asia (Vietnam) is 44 years old, is the oldest one among three groups, it can related to early years , Vietnamese refuges came to Canada, this the a reason why there age is the oldest.
(you can analysis it like this, and I will give you the code for variable, or you can check in code book , which I will upload)
5. for regression tables, eg: table 2
as you look the table, the coefficient is highlight in red: study in foreign country (-0.2629925), why I mention this number, I came to prof office hour, and let he look my stata output, he point out this number, and say:
it means: there is 26% less earning for female study in foreign country compare study in Canada, and also don’t forget analysis t-value.
6. table 3
0.0205692 I highlight in red, prof also point out it , means 2% more wage

Determinants of Wage and Salary Income

Professor instructions:
To write an original econometric research paper, using the IPUMS CPS data,  to research an economic question of your choice. Your paper should pose a question, develop a hypothesis, and then apply the econometric skills developed in class to analyze the issue empirically. In addition to answering an economic question based on the data, three tests should be included in the analysis: multicollinearity, heteroskedasticity, and serial correlation (if necessary). Because the CPS samples have a large number of observations over a large number of years, it is likely a good idea to limit your research to a certain geographic area and time period, as well any other data restrictions that are appropriate for your research question.
IPUMS-CPS is an integrated set of data spanning more than 50 years (1962-forward) of the Current Population Survey (CPS). The CPS is a monthly U.S. household survey conducted jointly by the U.S. Census Bureau and the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Initiated in the 1940s in the wake of the Great Depression, the survey was designed to measure unemployment. A battery of labor force and demographic questions, known as the “basic monthly survey,” is asked every month. Over time, supplemental inquiries on special topics have been added for particular months. Among these supplemental surveys, the Annual Social and Economic Supplement conducted in March (hereafter referred to as the ASEC) is the most widely used by social scientists and policymakers.
IPUMS is not a collection of compiled statistics; it is composed of microdata. Each record is a person, with all characteristics numerically coded. Because the data are individuals and not tables, researchers must use a statistical package to analyze the millions of records in the database. A data extraction system enables users to select only the samples and variables they require. You will need to register with the IPUMS-CPS website to extract data. IPUMS produces fixed-column ASCII data (a text file).
In addition to the ASCII data file, the system creates a statistical package syntax file to accompany each extract. The syntax file is designed to read in the ASCII data while applying appropriate variable and value labels. SPSS, SAS, and Stata are supported. You must download the syntax file with the extract or you will be unable to read the data. The syntax file requires minor editing to identify the location of the data file on your local computer. A codebook file is also created with each extract. It records the characteristics of your extract and should be downloaded for record-keeping. All data files are created in gzip compressed format. You must uncompress the file to analyze it. Most data compression utilities will handle the files.

, I want to find out how INCWAGE under person-income, which is “Wage and salary income” is determined on several variables. Which are, SCHLCOLL(School or college attendance) under person-education, and WKSWORK1(Weeks worked last year) under person-work.If possible, take sex and race as variables as well, which are under person-Core Demographic. Make regression models for “wage and salary income” on these variables(such as linear, log-linear, cubic or some other models that may apply). In each model, find out the coefficients for each variable and use the hypothesis test to figure out whether each coefficient is significantly different from 0. And use the F test to test whether each variable have a significant effect on wage and salary income. Calculate the Goodness-of-fit(R^2) for each model and decide which model is the best. And just as the professor’s requirement: multicollinearity, heteroskedasticity, and serial correlation (if necessary) should also be included. The sample we use is during 2000s(from 2000 to 2009). Thus, the data cart will have 10 samples, 3 to 5 variables. SPSS, SAS, and Stata is required to read these data, and Stata is preferred.

ECONOMIC SERVICE LIFE

Engineering Economy 7th Edition
Chapter 11
please use the chapter powerpoint and book as reference which i attached.
attached : the case, references, sample solution
The solution should be 2 things,

1-excel sheet showing the answer using economy formula
2-word answering the following question.
1. Find the ESL (Economic Service Life) of the CNC Machine. How does the ESL compare with the maximum allowed Retrofits or repairs?

2. The production manager and safety expert said, contend that only one retrofit (repair) is practical, because these types of CNCs usually have their ESL at their minimum before the second retrofit. Determine a market value for this CNC that will force the ESL to be 8 years. Comment on the practicality of ESL 8 years, given the MV (Market Value) calculated.

3. The Project Director advised you not to plan for any retrofits after the first retrofit. This is because the CNC will be replaced after 14,000 hours of operation. The cost Engineer needs to establish the base AOC (Annual Operating Cost) from year 1 sot that the ESL is 6 years. He also told you to assume now that the 15% growth rate applies from year 1 forward. How does this AOC value compare with the retrofit cost after the first retrofit?

4. What do you think of these suggestions from the plant superintendent and the line manager?
SUBMISSION REQUIRMENTS
1. Carry out the analysis and present the results in ONE WORD OR PDF file
2. Analysis should show the EXCEL analysis sheets
3. Submit the original Excel sheet you used in the analyses and organize the work in proper TABS as per the case questions above. All equations used or programming made inside excel should be available for the instructor’s review
4. The report will be organized as follows:
a) Cover page (names, IDs, Course, Semester, Professor’s Name)
b) Copy of the whole case and questions
c) Summary of the most important findings from the analysis
d) Detailed results AND analysis of the case with snapshots from the Excel sheets. Each picture, or table, or figure should be numbered and discussed in the text in detail
e) Appendix (any additional results you wish to add)
f) Format for the report
a) Font ARIAL size 10pts, spacing 1.5, margins 1.5” all sides
b) Number each page except cover page
c) Divide the work into the sections above and each section should be in bold and font size 14pts

Does Speculation of Futures of Food Commodities impact the Food Prices?

I am investigating whether the speculation of futures for Food Commodities has an impact on the food prices. I will be doing this through investigating whether the volatility in the futures of Food Commodities cause volatility of its underlying spot price.

Motivation is to show the speculation, which is secondary markets beings used as gambling casinos, has negative externalities on society. In particular food prices. Which is why, the futures and spot prices for – wheat, corn, sugar will be used.

I need a good quality literature review showing that forces beyond supply and demand, are in place for the prices of futures, in this case speculation.

Literature Review – what is been written so far on this.

I will upload files – with more details.
For example – financialization of commodities.

I need a Literature Review – which shows that my disseration will contribute, in the sense it will show it has an impact on food prices, via the volatility caused by speculation on its underlying spot prices – for food. Therfore, impact food prices.
Wheat, Corn and Sugar is found in nearly every food product in the supermarket. Nutritionists say walking down the aisle of a supermarket is like walking down a corn field.

Good to show how trading strategies in speculation, cause prices to rise. Trading strategies where if the price if rising, it is predicted the price will rise higher, they buy then sell. I hope this is understood – as I require more detailed explanation in this.
What is Speculation? vs the purpose of futures, and the existance of the secondary market- risk, liquidity – (just briefly touch on this)
WHat is Finanicialisation? (again brief)
How does it cause volatility? (breif)_

Main = literature review on specualtion of futures affecting prices. For example there is a paper (will upload), how speculation in oil commodities affect food prices.

I will also upload the methodology, it is of any help. Usually in Literature Review it is not.

main areas of government expenditure, namely education and particularly on third level education

The national budget is always an area that generates massive speculation and criticism in equal measures. This project will focus on the latest Budget (Budget 2016) announced 13th of October 2015. The project will focus on one of the main areas of government expenditure, namely education and particularly on third level education . This project should be solely based on Ireland.

Each project should have a good structure

1. Introduction

2. Budget 2016 is an expansionary Budget and includes a number of taxation decreases and government expenditure increases. Briefly outline one taxation change and one government expenditure change outlined in Budget 2016 that you agree or disagree with. Outline why you agree/disagree with these changes.

3. If your group were advisors to the Minister for Finance this year, review (i) one different taxation change (ii) one different expenditure change that you would introduce to either increase economic growth or equity in Ireland? Review how each policy would achieve this goal and how it would be financed?

4. Do you think Budget 2016 would been significantly different or not if the General Election was not due early next year, if so how? If your group were political advisors to either government party and your top priority was to win the General Election 2016, would this change either of policies your group outlined in part (3) of the project above, if so how?

5. Free third level tuition fees were introduced in Ireland in 1995/96. Free Tuition fees is no tuition fees and no registration fees. In light of the recent large increase in the registration fees: Consider the two possible approaches the government could take into the future to finance third level education

(a) Re-introduction of free third level fees paid for through higher taxation
(b) Third Level Students pay the true economic cost of €10,000 upwards per year and introduction of a student loan system and reorganisation of student grant system

Briefly outline which of these two approaches your group would favour and why?

6. The following include some of the most underrepresented groups in terms of third level participation in Ireland in 2015
(a) mature students
(b) travellers
(c) people with a disability
(d) People from socio disadvantaged backgrounds
(e) immigrants

Choose ANY ONE of the underrepresented groups listed above. Carry out two or more interview(s) or discussions with persons with personnel/professional knowledge of one of above underrepresented groups . This could include people are members of the above groups that is mature students or travellers or people with a disability or people from socio disadvantaged backgrounds or immigrants. The interview topic is low third level participation of this underrepresented group. Write a summary of the interview findings including what new information your group learned from carrying out the interviews. Place the transcripts including interviewees’ contact details at the back of the project. (Each group must interview different people and you should not share interviewees)

7. Brief conclusion: could include your groups’ own insights, policy recommendations and ideas about any of the Budget or/and the Education Sector topics discussed in the project.

Econometrics Research Paper
Your assignment is to write an original econometric research paper, using the IPUMS CPS data, accessible at https://cps.ipums.org/cps/ , to research an economic question of your choice. The CPS data has a large number of variables, allowing for many possible research projects. Here are some examples to get you thinking:
– How has the Affordable Care Act affected health insurance coverage?
– How does education affect the number of children born to a woman?
– How much of the racial income gap can be explained by observable factors such as education and occupation?
– How do transfer payments (welfare, rent subsidies, food stamps, etc.) affect labor force participation?
Here is some additional information on the IPUMS-CPS data, taken from their website. You should spend some time exploring the website to get a feel for what variables are available.

-White, B. M, R Little & M Smith Issues in World Politics 2nd ed. Palgrave, 2001.

The following texts are useful for a more explicit attempt to grapple with the theoretical basis of the discipline. All students are encouraged to use these.

Little, R & M Smith (eds) Perspectives on World Politics (2nd ed) – Excellent collection of articles organised around a three perspective view of world politics.

Bull, H The Anarchical Society. A classic text which explores the nature of order within the anarchical condition of world politics

Brown, Lynn-Jones & Miller (eds) The Perils of Anarchy is a collection of articles originally published in the journal International Security. The essays apply a “realist” perspective to the post-Cold War world.

Kegley, CW (ed) Controversies in International Relations Theory (1995) can be seen as a useful contrast to the Brown et al volume insofar as it is a critique of contemporary realist thinking.

Halliday, F Rethinking International Relations is an attempt by a leading British academic to explore changes in theory in the context of radical changes within the international system itself.

Groom, AJR & M. Light Contemporary International Relations: A Guide to Theory is a collection of short essays summarising all the key intellectual developments in the diverse discipline of International Relations. In addition to the short essays, it is very useful for the excellent bibliographies it contains
JOURNALS:”

You should get into the habit of consulting journals regularly. You should be aware that we will look favourably on assessed work that shows evidence that you have used a wider range of appropriate sources, including journals.

As a matter of course you should ensure you look at the journal The World Today (taken in the Kimberlin library) which is a very accessible short journal with articles that look at current issues in more depth than can be found in newspapers. You should also look to clip relevant stories from quality newspapers. Keep a regular eye on the Economist also. It is an invaluable source of data.

The following academic journals are also useful:

International Relations
Foreign Policy
International Security
Foreign Affairs
International Affairs
International Organisation
Review of International Studies
Diplomacy and Statecraft

7. Guide to the Presentation of Written Work

It is important that your work be properly presented (i.e. clearly written, supported by evidence, and well laid out). You can always ask your seminar tutor for advice and support on both the content and presentation of your written work.

In presenting work, please follow the guidelines below. They may seem a little pedantic, but we want to concentrate on what you have written rather than how essays are presented!

TYPING/WORD-PROCESSING: It is expected that you will submit your course work in word-processed form. Hand-written work can only be submitted where prior approval has been granted. You should use an easily-legible font (Times New Roman, Calibri or Verdana) in 12 point size. Double line spacing helps to make reading easier and provides space for comments.

MARGIN: Please leave a margin for your tutor to comment on what you have written. Tutors will use the margin to identify the strengths and weaknesses of particular parts of the essay. The assessment sheet addresses the whole essay. Having a margin allows you to get more feedback.

HEADINGS: Please indicate the title of your assignment or project, your own name and that of your seminar tutor at the beginning of your essay. Having to guess which question you are trying to answer can distract the reader from the arguments being put forward.

QUOTATIONS: The general rule about quoting from texts is that all quotations must be identified and properly referenced. Short quotations may be included in the main text, enclosing them in inverted commas. Longer quotations should begin a new line and be indented from the margin. Never use very long quotations of more than a short paragraph.
REFERENCING: All Politics and International Relations coursework should be include references to the sources that you have consulted in the work. We use the Harvard model of referencing. Referencing is a crucial way of making your sources of information transparent to your readers. A guide to how to reference using Harvard is available from the Hugh Aston Student Advice Centre and via Blackboard.

BIBLIOGRAPHY: You must list at the end of your project/assignment the books and articles that you used for it. A good piece of work will show that the bibliography has informed what you have written: there is little point in listing books that you do not use.

Note: The submission of an adequate bibliography is taken into account in the overall assessment. You will need to reference your sources adequately in order to pass.

Further bibliographical advice is given in the Politics and International Relations Student Handbooks.
NOTE:
Markers will be bearing the following questions in mind when they assess your work:
Has the candidate:

• Answered the question?
• Shown understanding of the issue?
• Shown awareness of the debates around it?
• Used appropriate, accurate and reliable evidence, illustration or argument to support his/her thesis?
• Shown evidence of sustained study and preparation?
• Demonstrated critical insight and originality in the answer?
• Expressed herself/himself clearly and concisely?
• Used a consistent and recognised system of citation and referencing?
• Met the required standards of presentation?

Format of the paper:

Paper based on web-information (except scholarly journals in electronic form) is not acceptable.

Purchased paper is not acceptable.

Provide page number.

Use font no. 12, double space.

Illustrations: make a copy of the art work you discuss in your paper, and if necessary, copies of other images you discuss in the paper, and attach them at the end of your paper (do not insert them in your text) as "fig. 1," "fig. 2," etc. Don’t cut images from books, particularly library books. For illustrations and images, you can use the Visual Resource Library (https://www.mdid.art.msu.edu) , or go to HYPERLINK "https://www.artstor.org/” www.artstor.org/ which MSU Library subscribes.

Provide the sources of the images.

Provide footnotes for citations of sources; use correct format.

Provide a bibliography; use correct format.

Do not use cover.

Give a title to your paper.

At the beginning of your paper, you may want to write an introductory paragraph, introducing your subject, your thesis, and the structure of your paper.

At the end, you may want to write a summary.

Content of the paper:

Your paper should be a research paper investigating a work of art, or a group of works of art, or an artist, or a topic in some depth, not a broad survey, such as "Indian art" or “Song dynasty landscape painting.”

A paper should not be a summary of the textbook or class notes.

Consult at least three books or journal articles on your topic; pay special attention to recent studies, particularly those from university presses and scholarly journals. The success of the paper depends heavily on the quality of your bibliography.

One important source you can easily use to find useful scholarly articles is HYPERLINK, and you can search for key words and download articles. For example, if you want to write a paper on an artist, you can search the artist’s name.

Do not write on topics with no connection to the course, for example, African art.

Organize your paper around your thesis (your idea, your argument, your opinion, your own understanding concerning works of art).

Your thesis or argument should not be too simple or vague; for example, "Buddhist art is great," "Japanese architecture is influenced by Chinese architecture."

Your thesis should be of scholarly nature (for example, "the image of Padmapani in Ajanta Cave One represents a new trend in Buddhist art); it should not be an aesthetic statement (for example, "the image of Padmapani in Ajanta Cave One is the most beautiful work")

If you do not have a thesis or idea about an art work, you may want to write an introduction to an art work (its date, the artist, its historical background, its style, its function etc.) or a topic, or an artist. But this type of paper will not receive an A, unless you demonstrate in your paper that you are a thoughtful, careful, and serious researcher, and present your materials well.
