1. You will choose two of the religions studied for this course (other than your own) and identify a contemporary social, cultural, or political issue that these religions address. It would be helpful to pay attention to current news sources in order to identify pertinent issues.

Research the religions and the issue(s) by engaging at least 8-10 academic sources; this is only a minimum number of sources and you likely will need to consult many more in order to develop a thorough understanding of the issue. Academic sources are those produced by scholars working in the field and/or published in peer-reviewed journals. To help you establish the credibility of the source, you can, as a general guide, ask yourself, “What are the credentials of the author?” or “Does this article or essay appear in a publication in which other scholars have reviewed all articles before they are published?” (most journals (not magazines) are peer-reviewed; you can also look to see if scholars are on the publication’s editorial board).

No more than half of your sources can be internet sources, and it is strongly encouraged that these be limited in most cases to “.edu” and “.gov” sites, although there are credible “.org” sites such as www.pbs.org. 3. You will then write a paper describing the issue and how and why the two religions address it. To help you achieve this goal, pay attention to the following:
A. The paper is not a report, but should come to some conclusions, demonstrating how and why each religion addresses the issue, the impact of the religion on the issue, the impact of the issue on the religion and its adherents, and how the religion’s perspective influences its adherents’ views on the issue. To achieve this, you should have a well-defined thesis that is developed by each paragraph. Your thesis should reflect the point or conclusion you are trying to make based on your research. Concepts and ideas studied during the course should be incorporated into your paper by using them to evaluate the religions’ responses to the issue(s).
