You will need to write about this topic: Smoking and its Effects on Lung Mechanicsand Relate the topic fore example to how respiratory
system work and how the exchange of gases could be affected by smoking and here are different topics you can relate to:
• Cardiac Output and Venous Return
• Cardiovascular System – Blood
• Cardiac Action Potential
• Mechanics of Breathing
• Lung Volume and Airway Resistance
• Oxygen and Carbon Dioxide Transport
Requirements:
1. Topics must all be related to physiology and what we have learned thus far in some way. This would mean taking a topic and
relating it to changes in ion currents, force production, diffusion, or energetics.
2. Papers are 4 pages in length. This is no easy task. Its actually harder to write short papers than long ones. The format should
conform to this –
a. Background and Significance
i. Describe the problem at hand. How does it impact society? What relevance does it have to physiology? What relevance does it have
to biomedical engineering? And most important of all – WHY DO I CARE?
b. This is section where you setup your argument. For example, “Muscle trauma from a car accident, laceration, gunshot, or tumor
resection is one of the leading causes of injury in the United States, affecting one person every three minutes and is estimated to cost
$671 billion per year. Injury to skeletal muscle can damage muscle fibers beyond repair, resulting in volumetric muscle loss (VML) and
functional deficits. Despite the prevalence of traumatic muscle injuries, there are still no effective treatments.”
i. This statement catches the readers eye and draws them in. The argument is that no treatments exist and the reader’s expectation is
that I will show them a new treatment.
c. Past research related to this topic
i. In this section of the paper, you will need to break down the paper into subtopics. Pick a list of 3 topics that you think or feel
are the most applicable and have the highest impact on patients and/or society. Again focus the papers relationship to physiology.
ii. Provide 1-3 paragraphs about each of those topics. Be sure to address current and past research (search from 1950s-present). Cite
articles where needed. Do your research on PubMed or Web of Science. DO NOT USE WIKIPEDIA OR A WEBSITE AS A CITATION. Those are not peer
reviewed journals and thus are not scrutinized by the scientific community. Lastly, do not plagiarize – put it in your own words.
iii. Pictures can’t be used.
3.
a. Conclusion
i. Develop an overall conclusion about the different topics, where the research has been and where it is now going.
