Using the tools and techniques explored during the delivery of this module you are to write a report which explores the operations of an organisation of your choice. You should select a small, local, Brighton-based business that you can visit, experience (ideally as a customer) and observe. You should clearly demonstrate how the positioning of the organisation influences and shapes the configuration of its operations. Specifically, you should address the following:
1 – How the performance objectives are reflected in the transformation process
2 – How the transformation process is influenced by the dimensions of volume, variety, variation in demand and visibility
3 – A map (using appropriate mapping symbols) and analysis of the process. This should include observations of where the process might be improved
4 – A consideration of other operations areas that you judge as material to the effective running of the operation
5 – A concise summary of your observations, which could include key observations (particularly relevant where you are not examining an improvement to the operations) or key recommendations (where you are examining problems with the operation and are in a position to suggest improvements).
The report should be no more than 3000 words in length and should normally contain the following elements:
A – Executive Summary
B – Introduction, which should reflect the competitive positioning of the organisation and how such positioning influences the configuration of its operations. This section should address point 1.
C – Articulation of the organisation’s operations using appropriate tools and techniques from this module and addressing points 2, 3 and 4 above.
D – Summary of your key observations/recommendations (point 5)
