You can choose any topic you’d like but it must be a controversial subject related to nutrition, food science or food safety.

nutrition

Jessica is a 28-year-old professional woman who is 5 feet 8 inches tall and vigilantly maintains her weight at 118 pounds by following a lacto-ovo (non-fat milk and egg whites only) vegetarian diet that supplies approximately 1200 calories a day. With her understanding that protein should provide between 10 and 35 percent of her daily calories, she reasons that her daily intake of 40 grams of protein from milk, eggs, legumes, and nuts is adequate for her needs. She is concerned, however, that she has been sick more than usual and has experienced two stress fractures in her leg over the past three years while exercising. Jessica decides to compare the protein quantity and quality of a liquid amino acid supplement this product to an egg. Initially she learns that 1 whole egg contains 18 amino acids (9 essential amino acids and 9 non-essential amino acids). ½ teaspoon of liquid amino acid product contains 16 amino acids (9 essential amino acids and 7 non-essential amino acids). Then she examines the Nutrition Facts label for these two products. ANSWER TWO OF THE FOLLOWING 12 QUESTIONS. State the number of the question that you are answering. Show how you came to your conclusions if calculations are needed. Pick questions that have not already been answered. When responding to a classmate, state why you agree or disagree and cite page numbers from the text for your main post and your response. MAKE SURE USE THIS SOURCE ONLY AND CITED PG. NUMBER ON POST AND RESPONSE TO CLASSMATE WHEN YOU ARE DONE IT SHOULD BE THE POST AND RESPONSE ( UNDERSTANDING NUTRITION WHITNEY ROLFES 14 EDITION 1. Explain why Erin’s assumptions about her protein needs are unrealistic based on her current weight. 2. Assuming a healthy weight for Erin is 141 pounds, use the information from the “How to” feature (p. 189) in this chapter to calculate her recommended daily protein requirement. Show your calculations. 3. What percentage of Erin’s current energy intake comes from protein? Remember that protein provides approximately 4 kcalories per gram.) Is this adequate? Why or why not? 4. Jessica’s energy needs for a healthy weight are closer to 1600 calories a day. How might her low calorie intake influence her protein status and possibly contribute to her current health issues? 5. How would you explain to Jessica how her low intake of calories and protein contribute to her risk for osteoporosis? 6. Assuming Erin consumes 20 grams of protein from whole grains, vegetables, and legumes each day, calculate how she can meet the remainder of her protein needs with dairy foods and egg whites. 7. Jessica is considering using the amino acid supplement shown above. What can Jessica learn about the protein quantity of one serving of liquid amino acid as compared to one whole egg? 8. Approximately how many teaspoons of liquid amino acid would Erin need to eat every day to receive the amount of protein in one egg? (Notice that the nutrition information for this product is for a ½ teaspoon serving.) 9. Looking at the Nutrition Facts label, what other important nutrients besides protein will Jessica

find in an egg that are not present in her amino acid supplement? 10. What is the sodium content of an egg compared to one serving of the liquid amino acid product? 11. According to information in this chapter, what is the safest way for Erin to obtain the protein and amino acids she needs? Why 12. What precautions should Erin take regarding the use of amino acid supplements

Nutrition behaviours

General guidelines and topic:
• You are to assess and critically analyse your diet and wider lifestyle behaviours in this project.
• The focus is NUTRITION and you focus on the analysis/analyses of your nutrition habits.
• You have to use evidence to support your statements! Especially peer-reviewed journal articles. We suggest
that you use a minimum of 5 journal articles and 3 other reliable ‘grey literature’ sources such as government
websites (this recommended number is different for each assignment). Remember that Week 3’s lecture and
tutorial focused on scientific evidence, citing and referencing. Also – like with the other 2 assignments – you
need to reference images. Don’t hyperlink images in this assignment (you are only allowed to hyperlink in the
blog assignment) – instead, either list the image source (i.e. web address) below the image (you can use this
resource to shorten long web links if you want to: http://tinyurl.com/) or ‘cite/reference’ the images as Sophia
did in Week 3’s lecture using letters, e.g. [A]. If the image is your own, please state that in a caption beneath
the image.
• This assessment has an emphasis on learning outcome 3.
• You can use some or all of the lifestyle measurement tools you used in tutorial classes T3-5 in Weeks 4-6 (e.g. 24-
hour recall of vegetable intake, food diary, IPAQ, DASS, etc.). You may also choose to use other lifestyle
measurement tools (preferably those that are validated by evidence) not covered in classes.
• You will submit a Word or pdf document via Turnitin/Moodle.
• A suggested structure for your project is outlined below. The main section headings are mandatory (e.g.
Background, Methods…), but you can decide what you include within each main section. Remember to keep
the Marking Rubric on page 2 in mind, and to cite references throughout.
o Title of your choice
o Background: things that you could include: nutrition/lifestyle influences on health, types of nutrients/foods,
determinants of (your) food and drink intake/wider lifestyle habits, what are guidelines for nutrition/physical
activity, nutrition/lifestyle assessment methods: how, why, limitations?
Nutrition Project Guide and Marking Rubric, page: 1 of 2
GENM0707 Nutrition and Health, S2 2015
o Methods: How you assessed your own nutrition/lifestyle habits. Include some or all details of your
assessment activities in the tutorials, e.g. the 3-day food diary that you completed. With this food diary, you
can estimate your daily intakes of energy in kJ and/or macro- or micronutrients that you are interested in. If
you used an app to do your food diary, this information may have been calculated automatically, but if
you recorded your food and drink intake on paper

Metabolic Disease Epidemic Report and Program Proposal

Choose one of these two issues from the topic metabolic disease epidemic:

  1. Adulthood type two Diabetes
  2. Childhood obesity (primary school aged children)

Write a report for the Australian federal health minister regarding a program you would recommend to address your chosen issue.

Your report should include the following information:

  1. a) Introduction to your report comprising definition and discussion of the prevalence and causes of this issue. Also include identification and justification of the specific target group / population group your program will aim to address.

  1. b) A brief discussion including an explanation of why this problem is considered a public health nutrition issue and why a public health approach is needed in this population group / target group.

  1. c) A review of two current or recent programs / initiatives (for example a nutrition intervention study or a national level program) to address this public health nutrition issue, focussing on critical analysis of relevant strengths and limitations of those initiatives (These must be programs / initiatives which were not discussed in the unit materials). You must provide a reference for each of the programs.

d) A proposal of one unique program / strategy to address this public health nutrition issue based on your review of existing programs (For example you should design your program with consideration for the strengths and limitations of the two other programs discussed in your review). Include a brief discussion of some likely strengths and limitations of your proposal, together with a brief conclusion

Whole Foods using Nadler-Tushman Congruence

Case: Outputs Diagnosis, SLP: Time Warp 3
Case for Whole Foods using Nadler-Tushman Congruence Model:

Use the Nadler-Tushman Congruence Module to analyze Whole Foods Market’s outputs. Start with the Organizational Level. Identify the Outputs – what does it produce and sell? What are its goals? How has it been performing? Then go the group level. What are some groups that Whole Foods Market identifies, and the goals and performance of these groups. Finally, discuss the Individual level. Here you will find it difficult to get much detailed information, so identify five to seven key jobs and their outputs. How can the performance of these jobs be measured? Finally determine the congruence of the outputs and make a strong argument for your case.

identify the outputs of the organization at each of three levels. Also identify the goals that it has set and its current performance. Include the following:
? Outputs at the organizational level are the products and/or services that it provides to its customers. What are these and how does the company categorize them? How does it measure its organizational performance (e.g., sales, net profit, return on sales, return on assets, market share, customer satisfaction, etc.). Provide some specific performance data.
? What are some ways the company identifies groups? For example, are there geographic groups (or divisions), functional groups, etc. What are the outputs of these groups? How does it (or how might it) measure performance of these groups?
? What are some of the key individual functions, and what are their outputs? How do these outputs contribute to the group outputs? How do they measure individual performance?
? Evaluate how the outputs at the different levels interact with each other. Determine if you think the congruence of the outputs is high, medium, or low. Then make a strong case. It is very important that you support your position with evidence and information that you have discussed earlier in the report.
