The use of Bayesian inference to identify problem-solving strategies employed in selected Geometry and Algebra problems

Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) are at the centre of a new awareness for an education system adapted to 21st century job demands. While the term HOTS is widely used, it remains rather vague and disconnected from the STEM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics) Education content itself. Even in good curricula, such as Singapore’s MProSE, there is little explicit mention of HOTS. A coherent framework is needed to bind the psychology of HOTS problems, STEM knowledge and mathematical problem-solving frameworks (e.g., Polya, Schoenfeld), before students can actually benefit from those separate knowledge areas. I propose to study stable patterns in problems posed across various math subjects (algebra, geometry, analysis, etc) and investigate how much and deep have they so far, if any, implemented Bayesian inference. Broad problem classes will first be identified and indexed, and prototypes within these classes will then be identified. Secondly, relevant problem-solving heuristics will be enumerated for each prototype. Finally, the stability of the patterns across the math subject will be analysed for their usefulness in exploiting HOTS .
Basically, the dissertation work will be interested in looking at what’s been done in the area of Bayesian inference for maths problem-solving strategies deployed in self-study products.

The strategies to do statistics on would read something like:

Given a prototype problem P (e.g. prove the two given triangles are congruent), exploit the …
- axioms of the relevant theory,
– definitions (e.g. congruent triangles),
– premises of the problem,
– useful relationships from a given list, and
– useful theorems from a given list.

This exploitation mechanism is meant to see which combinations and orderings are typically used for solving a prototype problem, say for middle school (IGCSE), late high school (A Levels) or undergraduate level.

Since this dissertation intends to explore what’s out there first then exploit an optimal structure of an AL based learning, the title can also read like “Statistics on Problem-Solving Strategies in Geometry and Algebra for Bayesian Supported Decisions and Inference Networks”.

This work is not intending to touch on the pupils’ psychology because, doubtfully enough, the scope of the dissertation would allow that. Mainly, the work is into the extent to which the problems themselves can achieve the prescribed learning outcomes and how it can be improved via textual analysis and other research means.

Hydraulic Services

ASSIGNMENT 2: HYDRAULIC SERVICES
Assume that each of the following is available:
Sewer: DN150 sewer located in the nature strip to the southern footpath of the road, with an assumed
invert level of RL 41.500. Sanitary drainage will connect to this main via a sewer boundary trap
(SBT) located within the property on the northern boundary. Design is required to upstream
side of SBT only.
Stormwater: Stormwater will discharge to a below-grade SDT in southern boundary carpark (see location
and plan dimensions on drawing) and then to the western kerb of the street. The gutter
discharge RL will need to be determined as part of the exercise. Use rainfall intensity data for
Rockhampton based on 20 minute duration (10 year ARI) and accept that Local Council
requires a design based on maximum 90L/s/Ha allowable runoff (i.e. your exercise is to
nominate the SDT depth based on inflow versus allowable outflow at the 20minute peak).
Potable water: DN100 main located in western footpath to the street, with invert at a constant 1.0m below
footpath. The supply authority can only guaranteed a pressure of 18mH and because it is in a
new growth area of the city, you need to install a surge tank as the mandatory design. You
must achieve 150kPa at the most disadvantaged outlet. Consider carefully the facilities and
determine overall capacity (mH and L/s) for a pressure set serving the development from a
surge tank location that you will note on your drawings.
Assessment Criteria
Using your appreciation of hydraulics installations to all levels of the building (Under-floor, ground and first floors
and roof), determine the following noting that you will be assessed on the points in each section:
1. Cold Water Supply System [40% of assignment 2]
Recommend a reticulation system. Provide a single line diagram of the system, indicating pressure zones,
loading units, select pipe sizes to limit velocity to acceptable limits and pressure sets requirements.
a). Single line diagram
 Loading units [15% overall]
 Pipe sizes [10% overall]
b). Pressure set capacity (in mH and Q) [15% overall including surge tank location]
2. Roof Areas Drainage System [40% of assignment 2]
Design the stormwater drainage system. Provide a single line diagram showing the collection system, including
flow rates, pipe sizes and falls to detention tank, the location of which is at your discretion. Determine detention
tank capacity.

1. The aim of this 5-7 page paper is to present the data you have obtained, explain the econometric methods you intend to use in testing your hypothesis and present the preliminary results
2. Even though, the introduction and literature review will not be regarded, include it in your paper, so as to have a good understanding of you topic.
3. Some advice regarding the data and empirics: i. Include descriptive statistics of your variables: means, std. deviations, min/max, number of observations Interpret the numbers- describe your data in the body of your paper. Make sure units are clear to the reader. Talk about an average observation as well as about outliers. ii. Make sure that the units of observation are clear to the reader and the sample selection is well explained. iii. Provide as much evidence from the data as possible – even if it doesn’t support your hypothesis. iv. For clarity, put your tables at the end of the paper. v. Discuss differences of means. I.e. if your theory is that FDI into countries with capital export controls is lower, tell us the average FDI (scaled appropriately) into countries with and without such controls. If your theory is that repeat customers tip better, tell us the average tip for repeat customers versus first-time visitors. vi. Explain why the simple differences-of-means, or simple OLS regressions, might be biased, i.e. why another empirical approach is more suitable in your case. Describe your empirical model. State the equation(s) clearly and list all the variables you are planning to include. If you are planning on testing different models, describe it clearly. Motivate your planned empirical approach using the theory as much as possible.
4. Some advice regarding the data and empirics: i. Tables should be self-contained to the extent possible and make sure names of the variables and units of measurement are clear to the reader. ii. Present the basics first (differences of means, OLS, etc.). Then explain why the simple correlations might be biased before you try anything fancier (fixed effects, 2SLS, FGLS etc.). iii. Discuss your results in the context of the theory and other empirical papers on the same topic. REMEMBER: Before you get involved in the actual regression analysis, first present evidence from the data itself that support your claim/hypothesis.
5.If you are planning on using panel data methods, at this point ignore it and run an ols regression ignoring panel structure of your data. Same if you are using probit/logit model on binary data or Tobit model on censored data. If you are planning on using multivariate probit or logit model, you don’t have to present any preliminary results at this point.
