4. Most students in this class are not supply chain management majors. Thinking about your specific
major and functions you might perform as a professional in your major, what lessons might you apply
from The Goal into your career? (one to two paragraphs) Use specific examples, situations and lessons
learned by the characters in the book when you perform your analysis, do not just provide philosophical
and generalized statements of popular management theory.
5. There are 3 types of constraints. The Goal spent most of its pages discussing one type: Resource
constraints, such as machines or other physical resources. But it mentioned or gave examples of the two
other types. What are these and give some examples you have observed in your experience
7. What were some of the steps that were taken at the constraint to make sure that the constraints’ output
was maximized (ch 19)?
8. What were some of the steps taken other places in the system (other than at the constraint) to make sure
that the constraints’ output was maximized (ch 21, 23, 26)?

Commodity Chain

write about one specific commodity- something that is available for purchase locally in Vancouver, BC Canada.
Select a spefic brand or make of product or even just one particular product made by a company.
You will try to trace the chain backwards from the final product to its origin included the raw materials and where it was produced and assembled. If possible how was it transported, who are the key players involved and what other factors may influence the trade of this product(govt policies, trade agreements, etc.)
It may not be possible to gather information about all aspects of the chain. However where
specific information is difficult to find, you may be able to find more general information. For
example, you may not find details about where Starbucks obtains their Ethiopian coffee beans or
who is growing them, but you could research coffee farming in general in Ethiopa,(where it is
gown, on what scale, farm ownership, working conditions etc ) and then suggest that this might
apply to Starbucks sources.
As an economic geographer, you should describe the three dimensions of the commodity
chain: its geographical structure, its type of governance, and the relevant institutional
frameworks. In describing the economic commodity chain, you should also include information
on the social, cultural, political and environmental aspects. Working conditions, allocation and
distribution of profits, environmental impacts, social relations, and cultural significance are all part of the chain.
Finally you may discuss issues related to ethical consumption, and whether or not this
particular commodity chain has been affected by attempts to impose any regulations or standards
(such as those related to fair trade)

Sustainability for the Future Global Supply Chain

§ The aim of the project is to provide an overview of the overall supply-chain of the
company and then to identify and fully develop TWO specific steps through the overall
company’s supply chain and operational processes in order to elaborate
recommendations for a more sustainable and future-thinking improvement of those
specific steps and processes.
§ You are also free to conduct primary research in order to help you for a critical evaluation
of the case.
§ The recommendations must be fully justified (drawing from the research, and sustained
by the relevant literature).
§ The project should be seen as a draft of a potentially feasible action to develop for the
company, and should therefore be set as a business plan, to include a suggested
tentative rough timeline (Gantt chart or using any of the many free project timeline
templates available online) with major tasks to be accomplished, as well as a fictional but
reasonable budget/financial plan.
Also drawing from your previous knowledge, you will then start to evaluate the strategic
sustainability approach to the management of the entire supply chain / supply network of that
specific global company (or specific sector) of your choice.
Equipped with these data, you will then have to prepare the plan for your own project
(detailed below), a brief rationale to explain the choice of the sector or specific company as case study and an overview of the most critical issues you perceived as being in need of
potential (realistic) improvement.
You should also aim to research and investigate these questions:
1. How can the sustainability concept be defined and applied into your chosen
corporation? How to evaluate the relationship between sustainability and supply
chain management for the chosen corporation?
2. Analyse the key success factors for implementing a strategic supply chain
management for your chosen corporation.
3. Do you think that the corporation has a built-in change management process that
constantly reviews the elements of supply chain and looks for opportunities to
improve quality and operational efficiency—or do they have systems, policies and
procedures in order to face challenges and continue the business growth?
4. Critically analyse how can supply chain risk be eliminated if the future can’t be
predicted.
5. Many companies have already spent a lot of time and money on sustainable supply
chain improvements. What more can they do?
You will demonstrate that you can apply the appropriate knowledge (concepts, methods and
tools introduced and explored in the lectures and seminars) through research and analytical
evaluation.
§ A Project must be a plan of action based on the existing situations and alternative ways of
performing them in the near-future and long term, in this case specifically in view of
enhanced value creation and sustainability-driven performance throughout the specific
supply chain or supply network.
§ Also note that a project must include a detailed description of the current situation, but the
main aim is to provide a set of realistic recommendations, fully supported by the most
relevant theoretical frameworks and models (e.g. sustainability maturity models, existing
standards or policies) and perceived future trends.as such, a Project cannot have a Conclusion – only once the plan starts to be
§ A project is forward thinking and is basically a fully justified action plan for the near future:
implemented can we monitor and assess, draw conclusions and restructure the plan or
proceed to further developments. Therefore, you can include Final/Concluding remarks,
but not a ‘real’ conclusion.

automotive supply company

P3 DB1
Study Books Used in Class:
Description: AutoEdge is a leading national automotive supply company located in Detroit, Michigan. Founded by Jonathan McAlister in 1976, the company specializes in engines and transmission parts and has been supplying products to the three largest U.S.-based automakers for over 30 years. AutoEdge’s name is known by customers and leaders in the automotive industry for quality, dependability, and reliable products. In fact, despite the extra cost that is added to the automobiles, consumers appreciate the AutoEdge brand name and often make purchases because of it.

In 2005, AutoEdge’s board of directors decided that the company needed to make some drastic changes because of the high cost of labor, rigid American regulations, and increased competition from other engine and transmission part suppliers. Their solution was to gradually close all manufacturing operations in Detroit and begin outsourcing to a well-known factory in South Korea. The board reasoned that this change would allow the company to compete with the growing industry, meet the automotive manufacturing demands, and increase company profits. Some board members were skeptical about the move, however, because AutoEdge had built a reputation for high-quality, detailed craftsmanship, and they feared that transitioning the manufacturing operations overseas would cause quality to diminish.

For the next 5 years, this strategy proved successful. The company showed signs of financial growth and company profit.

However, in 2010, the company was found guilty of supplying products that failed quality tests. As a result, millions of automobiles had to be recalled. The recall was highly publicized, and the issue of poor quality products impacted negatively on American automotive companies. AutoEdge’s $51 per-share stock has fallen to $4 per share, and brand acceptance has come under scrutiny among even its most loyal customers. Although some economists blame these negative effects on the products, others believe that it had to do with the termination of AutoEdge’s Chief Executive Officer, Fred McFadden.

Lester Scholl, Chairman of the Board of Directors, has called an emergency meeting to discuss AutoEdge’s short-term and long-term strategies. Among other things, they need to discuss the possibility of continuing production overseas or returning it to the United States. Lester and others on the board are well-known for being financially conservative and risk-averse. Because the American economy is experiencing high unemployment, low interest rates, low GDP, and low inflation, it might be sensible to make the change. To some extent, they believe that these macroeconomic factors can be used to their advantage. They realize the immediate challenges such as the brand damage, the growing competition, and the financial challenges the company is facing require immediate action. A new strategy must be formulated quickly to save the company from bankruptcy.

You have been hired by AutoEdge’s board of directors as a research analyst. Primarily, your job is to list and describe some of the legal, cultural, financial, and economic factors that AutoEdge needs to consider when deciding to either stay in South Korea or return to the United States. Because Fred McFadden was recently terminated, you will work directly with the board until a new CEO is named.
Primary Task Response: Within the Discussion Board area, write 600–800 words that respond to the following questions with your thoughts, ideas, and comments. This will be the foundation for future discussions by your classmates. Be substantive and clear, and use examples to reinforce your ideas:

Additional Information: Because the decision about relocating manufacturing operations to the United States is so important, the board of directors at AutoEdge continues to systematically discuss every aspect of the situation.

The following week, CEO Lester Scholl meets you for coffee to discuss next week’s board meeting.

“I’m hearing good things about you,” he says. “Ingrid and George tell me you’ve been very responsive and helpful.”

“That’s good to hear,” you say. “I’ve enjoyed working with them.”

“We’re both busy, so I’ll get right to the point,” he says. “One of the main objectives of any business is to be efficient. Without efficiency, the company is essentially losing money. Am I right?”

“Absolutely,” you say.

“What must AutoEdge do,” he says, “to obtain economies of scale with production? How do we know that it has achieved economies of scale? Conversely, how do we know if it is achieving diseconomies of scale?”

“That’s a good question,” you say. “I can understand why you ask.”

But before you can respond, Lester’s cell phone rings. After a minute, he ends the call and stands.

“I have to get back to the office to handle an emergency,” he says. “Would you send me an e-mail with an answer to my questions, please?”

“No problem,” you say. “I’ll get it to you before I leave work this afternoon.”

“I appreciate it,” he says. “Thanks.”

Assignment Requirement: AutoEdge CEO noted, “One of the main objectives of any business is to be efficient. Without efficiency, the company is essentially losing money.” You are required to write 600-800 words a discussion on what AutoEdge must do to obtain economies of scale with production? How do we know that it has achieved economies of scale? Conversely, how do we know if it is achieving diseconomies of scale?

In your own words, please post a response to the Discussion Board and comment on other postings. You will be graded on the quality of your postings.
